Rod Stewart, Glastonbury review: roguish charm with a touch of the cruise ship

Times29-06-2025
Just after whatever controversy was aroused by Rod Stewart saying 'we should give Farage a chance' in an interview I conducted with him that ran on Saturday, Stewart was carrying on regardless. He came on stage in a glittering tuxedo and white frilly shirt, backed by three blonde backing singers who looked like all his wives put together. Then he proceeded to ensure pure entertainment won through.
'I'm here!' announced Stewart, before adding, possibly in acknowledgement of Glastonbury's inclusive ethos: 'Music brings us together.' And Stewart does have the tunes to bring us together. Some Guys Have All the Luck was a mid-period favourite, while his throaty roar on The First Cut Is the Deepest, a soul classic made famous by PP Arnold, still had the power to cut through everything.
There was more than a touch of the cruise ship to it all, with the backing singers in tiny dresses and the string players made up of unusually glamorous women. Still, Stewart does have a roguish charm and he could really bring out the beauty of the songs, not least when he came toward the crowd for Young Turks. It was a little odd to hear Stewart's tale of nocturnal romance in the blazing sun, but that wasn't his fault and at 80 he still brought out the emotion. 'How was that one?,' he asked. The answer was: pretty good.
• Rod Stewart: 'We've got to give Nigel Farage a chance'
'There's been a lot about the Middle East, but I'd like to draw your attention to Ukraine,' said Stewart before a cover of the O'Jays' Love Train, but it was his own standards that made the set come alive. You Wear it Well was a lovely reminder of his ragged early Seventies glory days, while Maggie May, his tale of a teenaged one-night stand with an older woman, was lovely.
It was also dated. ''Allo girls!,' he shouted as the backing singers came forward for Young Hearts Run Free, while a rendition of Lady Marmalade began to look like a scene from the Playboy mansion. But nobody expects Rod Stewart to be edgy, and when he started kicking footballs into the crowd during Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?, the cheesiness slipped into the sublime. Besides, Stewart's voice remained incredible, this was the singalong slot, and everyone sang along to Baby Jane. Finally, Ronnie Wood came on for the Faces' rollicking classic Stay with Me and Lulu duetted on Hot Legs. If people were upset about Stewart's endorsement of Nigel Farage, they didn't show it. This was showbiz, right down to the swaying finale of Sailing.

Mum easily saves herself £400 by DIY-ing the perfect baby wardrobe using £60 B&Q basic buy

DI-WOW She's even got a plan to make the wardrobe work when her daughter is older too A MUM has shown how she saved herself a whopping £400 by turning a basic £60 buy into a gorgeous baby wardrobe. Nikole, who welcomed a baby girl into the world four months ago, admitted she'd been looking at different wardrobe options for the tot, but didn't want to spend loads. 4 4 4 So, she came up with a clever way to use an B&Q unit instead. "Turn this Kallax unit into a wardrobe for my four-month-old with me," Nikole wrote over the top of a picture on TikTok. She then shared a snap of the inspiration, as well as the final product. In another video, she detailed how she completed the transformation step by step. She began by taking out the centre sections of the top two shelves, before replacing it with a curtain pole. She then used some drawers, also from B&Q, to put in the third shelf down, before using fabric containers to go in the bottom two sections. Nikole finished off the transformation by adding some plastic baskets for extra storage at the bottom of the top part, which she got from TikTok Shop. "They're actually quite handy because you can stack them on top of each other but I think it all matches," she added. "It makes it all look really girly and I love it!" Nikole concluded by saying she's "very happy" with how it turned out, and is "obsessed" with the finished look. 'I can't wait for my kids to move out in September – I'm celebrating getting my life back with £2,000 party' "Swear I'd never seen anyone do this before and I did this for my little boy a few months back!" one person commented on the TikTok. "Now we've all had the same idea! Great minds think alike!" "It's such a quick and easy way at to add a little bit of extra storage," Nikole replied. "You literally saved my storage problem!" another praised. "I did this when my son was born, best thing I ever did," a third exclaimed. "So creative, love it!" someone else said. "That;s actually a really good idea!" another wrote. While someone else praised Nikole's "amazing work", another called it "so smart". "Dammit I got rid of ours! Wish I thought of this!" someone else sighed. However, there was another mum who said that while the wardrobe works "brilliantly for when they are tiny", it's harder as they get older, as the "clothes got bigger and it just didn't work". But Nikole had thought of that too, as she replied: "When she gets bigger I'm planning to remove the pink boxes, move the drawers down and make the wardrobe part longer to get more use out of it." 4

Celebrity SAS star breaks down in tears as they're forced to quit show after grisly injury - but BEGS to stay against all odds

Celebrity SAS star Conor Benn broke down in tears as he was forced to quit the show after a grisly injury on Monday night's episode. The professional boxer, 28, was determined to complete a drill that recreated the effect of a recovery mission. Despite suffering a nasty shoulder injury halfway through, he admitted to fellow recruit Adam Collard that he 'would rather f**k up his shoulder than quit the show'. But he also noted that if he were to be lined up for a boxing bout within the next three months, it could damage his career. Conor was then brought into the DS's for an interrogation as the team were worried his injury could affect him long-term if he continued. He then admitted his 'fear of leaving' the show, but the medical team concluded that he would no longer be able to participate as he'd injured his rotator cuff. The DS staff announced he would be medically withdrawn from the course – despite his begs to stay. 'It's a medical withdrawal, you have no control over this. You had a great journey,' Mark Billingham told Conor. 'What if it's fine?' he protested. 'It ain't fine. It ain't worth the f***ing damage mate,' Mark told him. Defeated, Conor admitted: 'I don't want to go, man.' DS Jason Fox agreed with Mark, who told him: 'Thing is it's getting to the point now where you're still in the middle of your career. You're still destined to pull in the big bucks. 'You're going out with your head held high, you didn't give up.' 'You've got from this what you need,' added Mark. 'You don't need anything else. You've ticked all the boxes we wanted you to tick. You've got nothing else to prove to us.' He noted that if he were to be lined up for a boxing bout within the next three months, it could damage his career (pictured in February 2024) Resigned to what happened, Conor broke down in tears as he hugged the staff and left the course. It comes after former Love Island star Adam tearfully spoke about his fianceé Laura Woods' miscarriage on Sunday's episode of Celeb SAS. The former Love Island star, 29, is engaged to TNT Sports presenter Laura, 38, and the pair share son Leo together. Adam and Laura began dating in 2023 after he DM'd her over a funny meme shared on her Instagram Story, and not long after the pair sadly suffered from a tragic miscarriage when Laura was 11 weeks pregnant. Speaking about the difficult time on the Channel 4 reality show, Adam was left in floods of tears as bravely opened up about a difficult few months in his life. An emotional Adam told Special Forces he was diagnosed with depression following the sad loss. Recalling the moment, he said: 'One of them was with my erm lost it was really close to getting there a second time and telling everyone.' As Adam struggled to get his words out, the Special Forces team clarify he is talking about the miscarriage. Laura and Adam began dating in October 2023 and announced that they were expecting their first child in 2024 and their son Leo was born in January 2025 He continued: 'I think I was proud of the fact that I was excited for it, which I didn't think I ever would be. 'And when it got taken away, and it was 10 times worse for her, I think it hit us like a tonne of bricks. 'We just really, really went to a bit of a bad place. And to be honest, in front of her I pretended I was cool, and pretended I was absolutely fine.' Adam later shed tears again as the recruits were asked to write 'death letters' to their loved ones. Reading out his heartfelt speech to Laura, he stated: 'The last few months have been really tough, but nowhere near as tough as you. 'We lost a baby recently.' He then started to sob, as his upset co-stars tried to comfort him. Adam added: 'I wish I had one more night to give you the world's biggest cuddle. Love you always, Adam.' In a piece to camera, Adam praised Laura, saying: 'I'd say I'm pretty closed off as a person and she definitely helped me to open up.'
