‘Even the crew didn't know': Confusion as AirAsia flight lands at wrong airport in South Korea
Originally set to reach Incheon at 7.50pm local time on Aug 13, AirAsia flight D7 506 reportedly touched down at Gimpo, 35km from Incheon, at 8.08pm after circling in the air.
According to passengers on the flight, after the captain announced they had arrived at Incheon, people stood up to retrieve their bags from the overhead compartments, but some looked out of the windows and checked their phones to find they were at Gimpo.
'Everyone panicked. It seemed the cabin crew didn't know we had landed at Gimpo until passengers told them,' Lee Mi-hyun, a passenger in her 40s who was returning from a trip to Malaysia with her husband and eight-year-old daughter, told The Korea Herald.
'One crew member even said she needed to call her parents, who were waiting for her at Incheon International Airport.'
According to the Korea Airports Corporation, what caused the flight to divert to Gimpo was 'turbulence' over Incheon Airport. The corporation added that the plane refuelled at Gimpo before departing for Incheon about two hours later at 10.17pm.
Lee noted that the crew failed to adequately handle the situation during the two hours before departure for Incheon.
'They appeared just as confused as the passengers. No water was offered and there was almost no food left on board, leaving passengers with children upset. Some even said they would rather get off at Gimpo before the plane departed for Incheon,' she said.
The captain and crew apologised over the public announcement system as the plane headed to Incheon, where it landed at 10.59pm, said Lee.
Some passengers criticised the airline for failing to provide a clear explanation of the situation.
'During the two hours before we departed for Incheon again, there was no clear explanation of what caused the landing error or any effort to reassure passengers,' another passenger surnamed Ryu, 39, told The Korea Herald.

AirAsia under fire after flight heading to Incheon airport lands in Gimpo
KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia is facing criticism after one of its flights from Malaysia landed at the Gimpo International Airport in South Korea instead of its intended destination, Incheon International Airport, on Wednesday night. The Korea Herald reported that Flight D7 506 was scheduled to arrive at Incheon at 7.50pm, but touched down at Gimpo at 8.08pm after circling in the air. Passengers said the captain initially announced their arrival in Incheon, prompting some to retrieve their bags, only to realise from the view outside and their phone GPS that they were at Gimpo. "Everyone panicked. It seemed the cabin crew didn't know we landed at Gimpo until passengers told them. "One crew member even said she needed to call her parents, who were waiting for her at Incheon International Airport," a passenger was quoted as saying. The Korea Airports Corporation said the diversion was due to turbulence over the Incheon airport. The aircraft refuelled at Gimpo before departing again at 10.17pm, arriving in Incheon at 10.59pm. A passenger said the crew failed to manage the situation effectively during the nearly two-hour delay. "They appeared just as confused as the passengers. No water was offered and there was almost no food left on board. "Some passengers with children were upset and others even wanted to disembark at Gimpo." Another passenger, identified only as Ryu, 39, said there was no clear explanation from the airline. "During the two hours before we departed for Incheon again, there was no clear explanation of what caused the landing error or any effort to reassure passengers." The captain and crew apologised over the public address system before the final leg to Incheon. AirAsia has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

AirAsia KL-Incheon flight makes surprise landing in Gimpo instead, passengers report confusion and two-hour delay
Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: The AirAsia Flight D7 506 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled to arrive in Incheon, lands at Gimpo Internationa Airport on August 13. — Yonhap pic SEOUL: Passengers on an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul's Incheon International Airport reportedly faced a delay of more than two hours after the aircraft unexpectedly landed at Gimpo International Airport nearby without prior notice. Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Flight D7 506 circled in Korean airspace before landing at Gimpo — around 40 km away — at 8.08pm on Wednesday, instead of its scheduled 7.50pm arrival at Incheon. 'A passenger mentioned we were at Gimpo, not Incheon, and even the crew looked surprised and asked us to confirm,' a 38-year-old passenger surnamed Kim was quoted saying. 'Once the crew realised it really was Gimpo, they became visibly flustered. Many passengers had already begun taking out their luggage, thinking we had arrived.' Incheon International Airport is located about 50km west of central Seoul, while Gimpo International Airport is about 15km away. Kim said passengers were told conflicting explanations, including turbulence and a fuel shortage, but there was no sign the plane had been refuelled. 'Even when we finally got to Incheon, no apology was given,' she added. A video recorded on board captured a flight attendant saying the plane had 'run low on fuel' and that the landing at Gimpo was an emergency measure, with the pilot checking if the flight could continue to Incheon. The aircraft stayed at Gimpo for about two hours before departing at 10.03pm and arriving at Incheon at 10.56pm. Kim's 44-year-old husband with the surname Choi, reportedly said passengers were not given clear information. 'There was no clear explanation about what the emergency was or how long we would be delayed … It was very frustrating,' he said. The cause of the diversion has not been officially confirmed.
