New French restaurant moving into embattled Wine Country space

A new Wine Country restaurant will mark the end of a dramatic legal battle that unfolded this year following the shocking closure of a popular Italian eatery.
French restaurant Bistro Lagniappe will open in Healdsburg in May in the space (330 Healdsburg Ave., Healdsburg) left empty by Molti Amici, which closed suddenly last November, only 16 months after opening.
Shortly after it shuttered, the Chronicle revealed that Molti Amici, which earned a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide, was in significant financial distress, losing more than $600,000 in its first year. In February, Molti Amici investment partner Jason Cutrer sued founder and SingleThread alum Jonny Barr for more than $1.5 million in damages, alleging that fraud and embezzlement led to the restaurant's demise.
Barr denied the allegations; earlier this month, the case was dismissed at Cutrer's request. In a joint statement to the Chronicle from Cutrer and Barr, the former partners said that the dispute had been 'amicably resolved.'
Molti Amici had a 10-year lease, so Cutrer created an entirely new concept, though he said he would not be involved in operations. Lagniappe is a Cajun French word that translates to 'a little gift' or 'something extra,' such as a bonus pepper gifted by a farmers market vendor when you've purchased a dozen.
The restaurant's striking outdoor oven — which predates Molti Amici and originally belonged to the locally beloved Campo Fina — will now be used to cook wood-fired dishes such as cassoulet, petrale sole and roasted chicken. Chef Jacob Hearth, best known for launching seafood restaurant Erizo in Portland, will lead the kitchen.

Fine dining concept Adia returns in Newport Beach

During the pandemic when most restaurants were closed, local chefs Karlo Evaristo and Jared Ventura were busy creating their own dining concept, Adia. A roaming, pop-up restaurant, Adia blends Evaristo's Filipino heritage and cooking experience with Ventura's Italian background and cooking skills to create a multi-course, fine dining menu. 'Adia began as a fun passion project for us. We wanted to do a long-format tasting menu because we really enjoy those special meals,' said Ventura. 'Our first dinner featured 22 courses,' said Evaristo. 'We started with pop-ups and moved into private dining during the pandemic, as well as restaurant consulting.' In the past, Adia has popped up in Orange County restaurants like Trust in Downtown Santa Ana and commissaries like the Hood Kitchen Space in Costa Mesa. On Aug. 8 and 9, the two chefs partnered with chef Benjamin Martinek, culinary director of Pendry Newport Beach, on a special seven-course dinner, hosted at Viamara inside the hotel's members only Elwood Club. The Pendry keeps Martinek busy, overseeing all dining concepts there, including SET Steak & Sushi, the Pavilion, Tree Shack Pool Bar & Grill, Bar Pendry and other dining concepts within the Elwood Club, like the Pub and the Cabaret. While partnering with Adia put another item on his plate, Martinek was excited to offer the experience to patrons and guests, while Evaristo and Ventura were happy to present Adia for the first time since 2023. 'It was an extra special evening for us because it was the first pop-up we've done in a very long time,' said Ventura. 'It was an evening of reuniting with some really great old friends.' Adia's long hiatus is the result of Evaristo and Ventura's busy schedules. Since Adia began, both have been absorbed in additional culinary adventures. Ventura started Vivi's Pasta, a small batch fresh pasta company that uses Italian 00 flour, no seed oils and offers gluten free options. Made by hand in Costa Mesa, Vivi's Pasta is available at the Aliso Viejo Town Center Market on Saturdays and Stonegate Irvine Market on Sundays. Evaristo opened 6100 Bread at 728 N. Poinsettia St., in Santa Ana, a sourdough bread bakery with viral blue corn sourdough loaves and an ube cruffin. The bakery draws long lines each week while also producing bread for some of Orange County's best restaurants, including Viamara. The special two-night dinner featured a mix of French and Italian cuisine that highlighted each chef's signature skills while taking inspiration from the seasons. 'We start by doing what we did in the restaurants before, and that was look at what's best available in season and ingredients that make us very excited. Then we write a menu and it definitely has influences from the both of us,' said Evaristo. 'We first started cooking together over 10 years ago, so we definitely think alike.' A croissant course, for instance, presented a bite-sized cube of crunchy, buttery, laminated dough topped with rich duck liver and blackberry preserve. Another course included a perfectly seared scallop with a delicately stuffed choux farci, or cabbage roll, in beurre rouge. The pasta course was made up of fresh polenta tortellini with truffle miso and a dusting of parmigiano. While there isn't another Adia dinner on the event calendar at the Pendry yet, last week's dinner has galvanized the pop-up's return. 'We are both very busy, but also very excited about doing new Adia pop-ups,' said Ventura. 'I'm sure we will have one or two before the year ends.' Keep up with Adia's future events at or follow them on Instagram @restaurant_adia.

SoundHound Crushed Earnings and the Stock Soared. Here's What Could Come Next.

Key Points SoundHound's market opportunity continues to grow. Q2 saw numerous impressive customer wins and 217% sales growth. What does soaring revenue mean for the stock? 10 stocks we like better than SoundHound AI › When I last spoke to you about SoundHound AI (NASDAQ: SOUN) in mid-July, I outlined three reasons the stock could explode to the upside. The stock rocketed 40% since the article was published, assisted by another stellar earnings report. Given the recent action, a debriefing is definitely in order. Let's take a look at what went right and what's next for this up-and-coming artificial intelligence (AI) player. Market, customers, and revenue (oh my!) The first pillar I mentioned in the previous article was the massive market that speech recognition has. Automobiles, drive-thrus, retail, and customer service are some of the largest and most obvious markets. Voice recognition technology in automobiles is advancing rapidly thanks to companies like SoundHound AI. The days of simply saying "play music" and hoping it doesn't make another phone call are gone. Future voice technology in vehicles will enable complex interactions, such as "give me directions to the highest rated Italian restaurant within five miles of my route home." Quite a step up! Drive-thrus and customer service will also be served by AI technology with limited human involvement. This is a game-changer for the cost structures of businesses. The savings will be immense, and companies can't afford to be left behind. Statista pegs the market opportunity at $16 billion by 2030; however, this estimate may be too conservative. Other research firms peg the total addressable market at more than $140 billion. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. The key for SoundHound to capture as large a piece of the pie as possible is to win new customers and expand offerings with current customers. SoundHound's customer list is impressive, with well-known brands like Stellantis, Hyundai, White Castle, Jersey Mike's, and many more. SoundHound reported Q2 wins of Red Lobster, Applebee's, IHOP, and a major Chinese automotive brands, and expansions with current customers like Chipotle and Firehouse Subs. SoundHound tech is now operating at more than 10,000 restaurant locations. The terrific execution translated easily to the top line with 217% year-over-year sales growth from $13.5 million to $42.7 million. As shown below, not only is SoundHound's revenue growing, but the growth rate is accelerating. Sales grew 151% year over year in Q1 2025, which was exciting. But the 217% growth in Q2 took it to a new level. What's next? In addition to the obvious use cases for speech recognition AI, emerging markets include smart homes, financial services, smart TVs and entertainment, healthcare, and employee training. Using AI in employee training, for example, will be a huge time and cost saver. A new team member can request step-by-step instructions for procedures, seek specific guidance from company handbooks, and receive coaching from AI on best practices, brand features, and more. The technology is only scratching the surface so far. But what does this mean for SoundHound stock? It's important to note that SoundHound isn't profitable and is losing cash from its operations. This isn't unusual for smaller, fast-growing tech companies, but it means that the company raises money to fund growth by selling additional shares of stock. This dilutes current shareholders. It isn't ideal, but it is necessary for now. The plan is for the company to become cash-flow-positive as revenue continues to rise. The stock trades for 46 times the last 12 months' sales; however, this will drop to 36 if SoundHound hits the high end of its 2025 guidance of $178 million in revenue. The valuation is high by traditional metrics, but a company growing sales by more than 200% is not at all typical. The bottom line is that the stock is exceedingly difficult to value at this stage. For this reason, the stock isn't for everyone, and investors should be cautious. Here's a handy guide to risk tolerance. The biggest long-term factor for success for investors will be whether the company continues to execute its growth strategy. So far, so good. The stock will likely experience significant fluctuations as it matures. Long-term investors should consider taking some profits when it rises, and adding to a core position on significant dips.
