North Andover police officer serving court order shoots off-duty officer
The 'armed confrontation' took place around 6:30 p.m. Monday, Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and North Andover Police Chief Charles Gray said in a joint statement.
It is not clear what led up to the confrontation, but Tucker and Gray confirmed that a North Andover police officer fired their department-issued gun while 'serving a court order' at the home of an off-duty officer.
The off-duty officer was taken to a Boston-area hospital for treatment of their injuries.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Officials did not identify either officer involved.

SPRINGFIELD — A judge has issued an arrest warrant for a woman who directed a torrent of bees at deputy sheriffs during an eviction on Oct. 12, 2022. Woods was not in custody by late afternoon Tuesday, according to law enforcement officials. The 57-year-old former beekeeper has argued in court that she is being persecuted for an act of civil disobedience and for her rage over the mortgage industry and court system. On Tuesday afternoon, Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni confirmed the arrest warrant was issued. 'While she remains innocent until proven guilty, the accusations against her are very serious, and we will be prepared to present the evidence that she endangered many employees of the Sheriff's Department who were merely doing their jobs,' Gulluni said. 'She may have delayed justice, but it won't be denied,' he added. A call to Woods' cell phone was not returned. Woods, who was known to oppose eviction proceedings, arrived at the $1 million home of Alton King Jr. at 49 Memery Lane in Longmeadow shortly after sheriffs arrived. Although she argues in court filings she brought her honeybees to enjoy the flower beds at King's house, she quickly began advancing on the deputies with the hives, witnesses said. Man accused of hammer attack in East Boston to undergo competency evaluation
A 37-year-old man accused of hitting another man in the head with a hammer in East Boston was arrested Wednesday, according to Boston Police. Eric Vargas, of East Boston, is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the incident on Tuesday, police said in a statement. A judge set a $5,000 bail for Vargas during his arraignment in Boston Municipal Court in East Boston, court records show. Vargas will also undergo a competency evaluation, and was committed to Bridgewater State Hospital. At around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a man walked into the Boston Police station in East Boston and reported he had been attacked by a man with a hammer earlier that morning, police said. The man told police that at around 6:30 a.m., when he was walking into a bakery at 40 Maverick Square, a man he didn't know walked up to him and asked him to use his phone. The man said he didn't have one and walked into the bakery, police said. When the man left the bakery, police say the other man, later identified as Vargas, hit him in the head with a hammer. The man sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby health center, police said. Officers on patrol found Vargas sitting on the steps of a building on Paris Street at around 5:16 p.m. Wednesday, and arrested him after 'further investigation,' police said. Cape Cod man pleads guilty to threatening federal official, relative during phone call
A 62-year-old man admitted on Thursday to threatening to kill a prominent federal official, their relative and the relative's spouse, according to federal prosecutors. Michael Mahoney, of South Dennis, pleaded guilty to a single count of transmitting interstate threats to injure another person. A federal court judge set sentencing for Mahoney on Oct. 29, 2025, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Leah Foley's office said in a statement. On March 28, 2025, while at dinner outside Massachusetts, the relative of a federal official got a phone call from an anonymous number at around 10:15 p.m. When the relative answered the phone, the caller, later identified to be Mahoney, confirmed their full name, according to Foley's office. At that point, Mahoney began screaming, telling the relative he was going to kill them, their spouse and the federal official. On the call, Mahoney referred to both the relative's spouse and the official by their first names. The relative hung up after 12 seconds, while Mahoney was still screaming. Mahoney called back, but the relative did not answer, Foley's office said. Neither the official nor their relative are identified in court filings or in a statement from Foley's office. Call records taken from the relative's phone service number indicated the originating number for the threatening call belonged to Mahoney. When law enforcement approached his home in South Dennis on March 29, Mahoney refused to answer the door or his phone, according to the statement. Mahoney was eventually arrested and charged in April. The charge of transmitting interstate threats to injure another person carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.
