1 2 Kolkata: Blue plaques, installed by KMC to indicate the heritage status of old structures in the city, have gone missing from three Grade I structures — two temples and a chapel — in the past month. Bikaner man held for faking his death to claim Rs 50L insurance
1 2 Jaipur: A 29-year-old male nurse who faked his death to claim a Rs 50 lakh life insurance policy was arrested in Bikaner after police uncovered forged documents, including a fabricated cremation receipt. Sub-Inspector Devendra Soni of Jai Narayan Vyas Colony police station told TOI that the accused, identified as Mangilal Jiyani, a resident of Sriganganagar district, worked as a day care provider. He was arrested Saturday following a probe triggered by the insurance company's suspicion over irregularities in his claim file. According to Soni, Jiyani purchased a term life insurance policy worth Rs 50 lakh on Aug 9, 2023, paying a monthly premium of Rs 1,221. After just two instalments, he was declared dead of a heart attack on Oct 14, 2023, and a claim was filed in his name. The company flagged the case after noticing the unusually short payment history. Investigations revealed that Jiyani's associate opened a fake bank account to receive the payout and was listed as the policy nominee. Mumbai: Bombay high court imposed Rs 5 lakh cost on Sandeep Sangve, former deputy director of education (DDE), Mumbai region, for depriving a retired college teacher of pensionary benefits and directed him to pay the amount "from his pocket" to the Armed Forces Battle Casualties Welfare Fund. Justices Ajey Gadkari and Milind Sathaye on July 24 said if the cost is not paid by Sangve, in that event, it shall be deducted from his salary. Five days after Sangve's transfer to BMC last month, he was suspended and an inquiry ordered into allegations against him as DDE. The School Education Department and DDE sought a review of HC's July 18, 2024, order to pay Anil Athawale pension under the old pension scheme (OPS) applicable to part-time teachers.
