Phone tapping row: Bandi Sanjay urges CBI, ED intervention

The Hindu4 days ago
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Friday demanded that the Congress government seek the assistance of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to trace the money laundering trail in the alleged phone tapping case during the previous BRS regime.
Speaking to the media after deposing before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Hyderabad, the senior BJP leader and Karimnagar MP alleged that during former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao's tenure, former Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) chief Prabhakar Rao and his close aides, including Praveen Rao and Radhakishan Rao, blackmailed politicians and contractors under the pretext of Maoist surveillance, extorting large sums of money.
'Where did all the money, including ₹7 crore extorted from a Congress Party candidate in Khammam go?' he asked. Mr. Sanjay Kumar claimed that except for KCR, K.T. Rama Rao and Santosh Kumar, phones of all other BRS leaders, including Kavitha and T. Harish Rao, were tapped. He alleged that over 6,500 phones were under surveillance during that period, severely damaging the reputation of the SIB.
He further stated that phones belonging to his associates, himself, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, judges, and several others were illegally monitored during the BRS government's tenure. He questioned why the Congress government has not made any arrests so far.
'We have nothing against the SIT, but why is the Chief Minister not appearing before it? Will they dare summon judges to depose? Who is Mr. Revanth Reddy to give a clean chit to KCR? Why mislead the public with commissions and probes?' he asked, referring to recent remarks made by the Chief Minister in Delhi.
The Minister questioned whether the Congress government has the 'guts' to arrest KCR or his family members for their alleged involvement in phone tapping and other scams worth thousands of crores. 'It's been over a year since Mr. Revanth Reddy took charge, but apart from time-pass commissions and probes, there has been no concrete action against BRS leaders despite overwhelming evidence,' he said.
'Doesn't this suggest an understanding between the Congress and BRS? We don't trust this government. KCR is influencing Congress leaders in Delhi with his ill-gotten wealth. His corruption has become an 'ATM' for the Delhi leadership,' alleged the BJP leader.
Mr. Sanjay Kumar asserted that if the case were handed over to the CBI, KCR and KTR would already be behind bars. 'You (Congress govt.) do not have the courage to act against them, then what's your objection to handing over the case to the CBI?' he asked.

‘124-year-old' Minta Devi wants poll body to rectify age goof-up

Siwan's Minta Devi, who became the face of the Opposition's protest against the Election Commission on Tuesday (August 12, 2025), said she was not aware that her age in the electoral roll was recorded as 124 years. She urged the poll panel to correct it. Several Congress MPs, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, wore a T-shirt with Ms. Devi's face printed on it while protesting outside the Parliament against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. The Opposition leaders alleged voter fraud in various constituencies and cited Ms. Devi's case to highlight 'irregularities'. 'I do not know what is going on in the Parliament, but my date of birth mentioned in the Aadhaar card is July 15, 1990. I had given my Aadhaar to my brother-in-law who had applied online for the voter I-card two months ago,' she said. The application was made in Siwan. 'However, when I received my voter card, I did not check it. It was only when the media met me that I saw my date of birth was printed as July 15, 1900. It is the mistake of the person who has issued the voter card,' Ms. Devi said, adding that she has never voted before. She said no Booth Level Officer contacted her during the SIR. 'Those who are responsible for this blunder should rectify it and issue me a fresh voter I-card. I have not made any mistakes,' Ms. Devi said. Ms. Devi is a resident of Arjaanipur village and a voter registered in the Daraunda Assembly constituency of Siwan district. Her husband, Dhananjay Kumar Singh, is an e-rickshaw driver. The Siwan District Magistrate's office issued a press statement saying that the age shown in Ms. Devi's voter card was due to a 'human error' and it was made by her husband while filing the online form. The process of correction has already started, the statement said. 'Deputy Election Officer, Siwan, Sohail Ahmed has received the information that in polling station number 94, Siwan block under 109 Darauda Legislative Assembly constituency, Minta Devi, husband-Dhananjay Kumar Singh had filled the online application form for adding the name through Form-06,' the statement said. Ms. Devi's father-in-law Tej Bahadur Singh alleged that the BLOs were not going door-to-door for verification. 'The BLOs filled most of the enumeration form on their own. If they would have visited our house, we could have told them about the number of family members and their age,' he said.

Mass burial case: SIT deploys drone-mounted radar at D'sthala excavation site

Mangaluru: Site No. 13, linked to the alleged Dharmasthala mass burial case, was at the focus of the special investigating team's (SIT) probe until late Tuesday evening, though no human remains were found. As part of the ongoing probe, the SIT deployed a drone-mounted ground penetrating radar (GPR) to survey the area, after calibrating the device on Monday. DGP (internal security) Pronab Mohanty, who heads the SIT, oversaw the operation and gathered inputs from senior officers, including SP Jitendra Kumar Dayama. SP C A Simon, and Puttur assistant commissioner Stella Verghese were also present. Following the GPR survey, SIT opted for a manual search. His advocates were also present. Unlike the search operation on other days, SIT chose not to cover the area from public view and deployed two earth movers for digging. At two spots, digging was done up to a depth of 18 feet and the exercise was videographed. Mud samples were also collected from the site for further examination. Officials from National Human Rights Commission, which has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, also visited the site. Meanwhile, SIT is cross-verifying records at multiple sources. Nikhil criticises Congress over Rajanna dismissal

Davanagere: Nikhil Kumaraswamy, president of the JD(S) State Youth Wing, criticised the dismissal of KN Rajanna from the cabinet, accusing the Congress of disrespecting the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. On Tuesday, he told reporters that the Congress, which claims to provide social justice to the scheduled castes and tribes, is not treating the leaders of these communities properly. He said, "There was an opportunity to obtain a respectful resignation from the senior leader Rajanna. Instead, he was suddenly removed from the cabinet, causing embarrassment. There is no internal democracy within the Congress party , which speaks of democracy and the Constitution." Nikhil also noted that no action was taken against ministers facing corruption charges. However, Rajanna, who spoke the truth, was made a scapegoat. "What was wrong with Rajanna's statement about vote theft?" he questioned. Regarding the alliance for local body polls, he said, the alliance between the BJP and JD(S) will continue in all elections, including local bodies. The BJP has responded positively to the proposal to form a committee to maintain coordination at the state, district, and taluk levels. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRI in Ukraine?
