JD(U) slams Tejashwi over remarks on martyr status
Patna: Senior JD(U) leader and parliamentary affairs minister
Vijay Kumar Choudhary
on Tuesday advised leader of the opposition
Tejashwi Prasad Yadav
to refrain from making political comments on sensitive matters such as the conferral of
martyr status
within the armed forces.
The remark came after RJD leader Tejashwi wrote to Union home minister Amit Shah, alleging discrimination against personnel from paramilitary forces. In the letter, he wrote, "All the soldiers of the Army, Air Force, Navy and paramilitary forces (CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF, SSB, Assam Rifles, etc.) make the supreme sacrifice for the security of the country. But it is sad that there is clear discrimination in the honour, compensation and other facilities given to the martyrs who sacrifice for the motherland after martyrdom.
" He called for equal recognition and benefits for martyrs from all uniformed services.
Responding to this, Choudhary said, "Category-wise standards have already been set by the Government of India for granting martyr status. In such a situation, it is not appropriate to raise unnecessary questions on this subject."
He said it was inappropriate to politicise "extremely sensitive matters like Operation Sindoor," adding that the Centre had already held two all-party meetings to brief political leaders on the issue.

Tejashwi, however, maintained that martyrdom does not always occur immediately in conflict situations. "In war-like situations, many times the martyrdom of soldiers does not happen immediately. They become martyrs a few days after the incident. Keeping these things in mind, their facilities should be expanded. The govt should take serious initiative in this matter," he urged.
Meanwhile, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor on Tuesday called on the Centre to disclose the number of soldiers from Bihar who have died in recent military confrontations with Pakistan. Kishor made the statement while speaking to the reporters in Saran district after meeting the family of BSF sub-inspector Mohd Imtiyaz, who was killed earlier this month in Jammu & Kashmir.

‘Be like Colonel Sofiya Qureshi: BJP's minority wing to spread message at Shaheen Bagh chaupal today
In an attempt to motivate Muslim women to join the Indian Army, the BJP's Minority Morcha will be organising a 'minority chaupal' in Shaheen Bagh, Tuesday. The initiative marks the first such event in the Capital as part of a nationwide campaign by the minority wing to mark the Narendra Modi government's first anniversary of its third term in office The chaupal, according to party organisers, is aimed at encouraging Muslim women — particularly young girls — to consider careers in the Indian Army, including under the Agniveer recruitment scheme. The event will also include the distribution of copies of the Indian Constitution and information sessions on various government programs. 'Through this chaupal, Minority Morcha National President Jamal Siddiqui will inspire Muslim girls to join the Army, taking inspiration from officers like Colonel Sofiya Qureshi,' said Ashu Chaudhary, Delhi State Executive Member and programme coordinator. 'Muslim women will also be informed about their rights and achievements of the Modi government over the past 11 years.' Colonel Qureshi was the Indian Army officer who had briefed the media during Operation Sindoor. Siddiqui will be the chief guest at the event. A camp for one-stop registration under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana will be set up as part of the programme. Shaheen Bagh, which gained national attention during the 2019–20 anti-CAA protests led largely by Muslim women, has been chosen for the pilot chaupal under this campaign. In preparation for the chaupal, the Minority Morcha has reached out to residents through phone calls, text messages, and posters inviting them to attend, a party source said. Sources also said that the event is part of a broader campaign by the minority wing to reach minority communities across the country. 'State units have been tasked with forming teams at the district level to organise similar Chaupals nationwide, aimed at increasing awareness of central government initiatives and encouraging participation in civic and national programmes,' a minority morcha leader said. The campaign also comes in the backdrop of criticism faced by the party after BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Minister of Tribal Welfare, Kunwar Vijay Shah, had made remarks about Colonel Qureshi. Shah, an important tribal leader in the BJP ranks and a controversial figure, had said at an event near Mhow last month that 'India had taught a lesson to those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack using their own sister (unki samaaj ki behen ke zariye)', triggering a backlash from the Congress that alleged he referred to Col Qureshi. While the party has not officially responded to the incident, the minister later apologised and said that the comment was misunderstood and was a 'linguistic error.' While announcing the minority chaupal on Monday, the minority morcha stated, 'In the chaupal, while discussing with the daughters, they will be told about Colonel Qureshi and they will be inspired to be like her.'

BJP hails 11 ‘golden'years of Modi as PM
The 11 years of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will be written in golden letters because it ushered in changes with wider ramifications on polity, society and economics, and laid the foundations of Viksit Bharat or developed India, Union minister and Bharatiya Janata Party chief JP Nadda said on Monday. Addressing the media on the 11th anniversary of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government and the first anniversary of the coalition's third term, Nadda said Modi changed the country's political culture and made room for performance-driven politics and good governance by implementing a model of 'responsible and accountable' government. He also criticised the Opposition, underscored that NDA will finish this term and the next, and said God should give Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wisdom. Separately, Union home minister Amit Shah said that the 11 years proved to be a milestone in the direction of national security, while adding that India now responds to terror attacks by entering the home of terrorists. 'The work that has been dedicated to Amrit Kaal should be written in golden words. It is unprecedented. He (PM) changed the political culture...11 years ago the country had a political culture of appeasement and bifurcating society. PM Modi has reshaped the Indian political is now a people-led government. Over the past years, we have brought transparency and built a forward-looking, futuristic administration. We are a responsive, responsible and accountable government. And we are proud to say, the government set up a new normal of effective, decisive government and one that brings economic discipline,' Nadda said. With Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the Pakistan-sponsored April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam dominating the political and security narrative, Nadda said the PM confronted all problems upfront. He said India's doctrine that all terror attacks will be considered an act of war has become 'the new normal.' 'When Uri happened (in 2016) for the first time the PM said, the sacrifice of the soldiers will not go in vain and then surgical strike happened. When Pulwama happened (in 2019) he said you made a big mistake and you will have to bear the brunt of it. And the air strikes happened (in Balakote)...After Pahalgam, he said in Patna, that the response will be beyond imagination...' Nadda said. He was referring to Operation Sindoor. He credited the government for cracking down on Naxalism. 'Under the Modi government, the number of districts affected by Naxal violence has significantly reduced from 126 to just 18. Top leaders of Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) have been eliminated. There was a time when the defence minister used to say 'we don't build roads in border areas so that the enemy can't reach us.' Today, that mindset has changed completely. We have constructed over 8,000 kilometres of border roads, strengthening both our national security and infrastructure in previously neglected areas,' Nadda said. He said the general elections of 2014 changed the political landscape, and a transparent and futuristic government took office. 'The government before 2014 was marked by scams and corruption and it worked for appeasement. In 2014, there was a shift from negativism to positivism. Today ordinary people are saying Modi hai to mumkin hai (it is possible, if there is Modi),' Nadda said. He underlined that the PM's policy of 'transform, reform and perform' was seen in all policy matters. The abrogation of Article 370, that gave the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir its special status; outlawing Triple Talaq, and passage of the Waqf (amendment) Bill were underlined by Nadda as illustrations of the government's bold decisions. He said there was a political narrative that abrogation of Article 370 was not possible. 'Elections in the state (J&K) were known as formality... But the voter turnout was 58% in the Lok Sabha and 63% in the assembly polls.' 'Triple Talaq was not followed even in the Islamic countries. It was anti women… Enactment of the new waqf act was done in the interest of the community and the nation. And we know how a narrative was formed (against it)…' he said. Nadda also referred to the demonetisation of 2016 and the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill as examples of bold decision making. Hailing the government for policy interventions on the economic front, Nadda said 'Economy jumped from the 10th to the 4th position. We are the fastest growing economy for the fourth year. Per capita income has increased, our exports have gone up. There is an increase in the number of taxpayers and direct tax collection has increased by 248%. The World Bank calls us the fastest growing economy and the World Economic Forum says India will be the primary engine of growth...' He said Operation Ganga – launched to repatriate Indians from war-torn Ukraine – also helped evacuate people of other nationalities, and underlined that India supplied free vaccines to over 150 countries during the pandemic. Describing Covid as 'the biggest global crisis', he said no one fought it like India did. 'Here the fight was fought with the people … the PM took people along. In other countries there were protests against the lockdown and vaccines...' Nadda said. Garib Kalyan (empowerment of the poor) was not a mere slogan, but the government walked the talk by pulling 250 million people out of poverty, he said. He cited the example of demonetisation as an illustration of how people stood by the government even during difficult policy decisions. Hailing the government's attempts to boost cooperative federalism, he said GST was an example of it. 'Why was it not implemented before? Today the GST collections stand at ₹20.8 lakh crore a year,' he said. He also took potshots at Rahul Gandhi for making accusations against the election commission and for insinuating that NDA will not last the full term. 'The NDA will complete this term and the next time also. They (Opposition) have no interest in how the country can move ahead. They are involved in conspiracy theories,' he said. On Gandhi's allegations against EC in the Maharashtra polls, he said, 'God should give him wisdom. It is difficult to understand his motive. In the all party meeting, he said he supports the government, and then goes on to raise questions. This is an irresponsible Opposition,' he said.

EV vs hybrid war: All clean fuel-run vehicles are equal for the PMO
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) believes the Centre needs to support all clean-fuel vehicles including hybrids, even as a rift widens in the Indian auto industry over hybrids being put on a par with pure electric vehicles (EVs). The stand, confirmed by two top government officials, comes after manufacturers of both electric and hybrid vehicles sought the Centre's favour after several state governments proposed incentivizing electric, hybrid and CNG vehicles equally. 'I do not understand why there is so much lobbying. State policies may differ, but the central government has supported both EVs and hybrids in clean mobility schemes. It cannot be that you incentivize one and not the other. The idea is to help all forms and all clean fuels," one of the two officials said on the condition of anonymity. The incentives for EVs and hybrids are aimed at reducing the country's fuel imports and carbon emissions. "All clean mobility initiatives which contribute to this have been incentivized so far, and will continue to be so," the second official said, also on the condition of anonymity. Govt support Mint reported on 6 June, quoting Union heavy industries minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, that the government would continue to support all forms of clean mobility, including hybrid vehicles, which combine the power of a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) with an electric motor, improving fuel efficiency while cutting down on emissions and fuel usage. Even in the past, the Centre supported hybrids and EVs alike in various subsidy schemes, including the second iteration of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India), which ran from 2018-19 to 2023-24. Also read | ARAI likely to plan division of auto testing agencies allocation Eventually, support for clean-fuel cars was removed under the PM E-Drive scheme (2023-24 to 2025-26). However, it continues to incentivize pure electric buses and electric and hybrid ambulances. The outlay for incentivising such ambulances is ₹500 crore till the end of FY26. Nevertheless, the Union government will continue to support policies to promote clean mobility through all possible means, including EVs, hybrid vehicles, as well as vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquified natural gas (LNG), among others, according to the government officials cited above. The EV vs hybrid war Mint reported on 24 April that the Delhi government had proposed to grant hybrid cars the same benefits as fully electric ones, raising concern among carmakers that had committed vast amounts to develop battery EVs, skipping hybrid technologies. The draft of the Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy 2.0 seeks to waive road tax and registration fees on electric cars priced up to ₹20 lakh ex-showroom and extend the benefit to strong hybrid EVs (SHEVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) with a similar price cap as well. Also read | More than 6 lakh electric 2, 3-wheelers sold under PM E-Drive scheme since April An SHEV is typically a car in which an electric motor gives significant assistance to the combustion engine. PHEVs, as the name suggests, come with a charging port for the battery that drives the motor. These vehicles can also run exclusively on the electric motor. Uttar Pradesh was the first state to waive these charges for hybrid vehicles in July 2024. CAQM direction Meanwhile, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on 4 June also directed commercial vehicle operators to include 'clean' vehicles, including hybrids, in their fleets to help curb air pollution in the national capital. Worried about losing market share, EV makers have urged the Union government not to incentivize them on par with EVs. They have argued that parity between incentives for hybrids and pure EVs would push consumers towards hybrids, which are not zero-emission vehicles. Also read | Tata Motors pushes for e-taxi subsidy after exclusion from PM E-Drive India's EV market was valued at $54.41 billion in 2025, and the hybrid vehicle market at about $0.53 billion, according to market research company Mordor Intelligence. India's automobile market, the world's third-largest by sales, was valued at $137.06 billion. Clean-fuel clash India's major EV makers include Tata Motors Ltd, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Kia India Pvt. Ltd, and JSW MG Motor India Ltd. The hybrid carmakers are led by Maruti Suzuki India Pvt. Ltd, Honda Cars India Ltd, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. 'Tata Motors believes that government incentives should be directed towards promoting zero-emission technologies such as EVs by bridging funding gaps, developing enabling infrastructure, and accelerating innovation to help them reach scale and maturity. Hybrid is an incremental and mature ICE technology, which is commercially viable and faces no funding or adoption barriers that typically warrant government support," said a Tata Motors spokesperson in an emailed statement. Also read | Subsidies on e-scooters to slide to ₹5,000 per scooter in Oct 2025 The spokesperson added that hybrids use fossil fuels, resulting in PM2.5, CO2, and other tailpipe emissions like any other ICE vehicles. Directing any incentives or subsidies toward them can divert India from its net-zero and energy security objectives. 'Viability gap' Rahul Bharti, senior executive officer, corporate affairs, Maruti Suzuki, countered the argument, saying that strong hybrid EVs reduce CO2 emissions by 25% to 31% over pure petrol vehicles and increase energy efficiency by 36% to 44%, but they still have a viability gap. 'So, the tax cannot be the same for a strong hybrid and a pure petrol/diesel vehicle. Data shows that wherever SHEVs have been incentivized, the sales of BEVs have not fallen at all; on the contrary, they have gone up. SHEVs will help reduce pure diesel/petrol cars, and that is in the national interest," he added. Also read | E-buses under PM E-drive to be used now for intercity, tourist travel While hybrid vehicle sales rose about 12% year-on-year to 365,024 in 2024-25, pure EV sales rose 17% to 1,967,313, showed data from the central government's Vahan portal. Queries emailed on 5 June to the PMO, on 6 June to Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India, Kia India, JSW MG Motor, Honda Cars, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor, and on 7 June to the heavy industries ministry, remained unanswered until the time of publishing this story. Experts weigh in The share of non-conventional fuels has increased to a fifth of total passenger vehicle volumes, as against less than 5% five years ago, said Srikumar Krishnamurthy, senior vice-president and co-group head, corporate ratings, Icra Ltd. 'Specifically, hybrids have seen better acceptance in the last one and a half years as they reduce carbon emissions while managing to achieve good ranges. While hybrids at this stage are a stop-gap solution as EV infrastructure is yet to mature, they are also playing a strategic role in achieving sustainability and with more product launches and better product quality, it has become more popular."
