Solar panels, wind farms, and digital links featured in Bahrain's pitch to Mediterranean lawmakers this week as MPs set out plans for shared infrastructure, closer ties, and smoother trade during a summit in Marrakesh.
MP Mohammed Mousa, Chairman of the Public Utilities and Environment Committee, said Bahrain is backing renewable energy and modern technology as part of its wider development effort led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
He added that Parliament and the Cabinet, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, are working together to meet international goals.

These include overhauling the country's energy systems, improving key networks, and drafting laws that keep pace with changes abroad.
Second Session
Mousa was speaking during the second session of the forum titled Energy Transition, Adaptation and Energy Security: Strategic Choices, part of the third Parliamentary Economic Forum of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.
He was joined by MPs Hanan Fardan and Basema Abdulkarim, who also took part in the opening session on trade and finance shifts between the Arabian Gulf and the Mediterranean.
Fardan told the gathering that Bahrain is keen to work more closely with Mediterranean countries in trade, investment, and digital development.
Broader Direction
She said the approach reflects the country's broader direction, shaped by royal guidance and carried forward by both Parliament and government.
The lawmaker pointed to Bahrain's work to improve its digital infrastructure and maintain its standing as a financial hub.
On energy, she said the Kingdom is expanding its use of renewables, with solar and wind schemes forming part of long-term planning.
Regional Advisory Group
In her remarks during the forum's third session titled Artificial Intelligence and its Governance: Strengthening Parliamentary Oversight, Fardan called for the creation of a regional advisory group bringing together parliaments, researchers, and technology firms.
Such a body, she said, would support a shared understanding of artificial intelligence, similar to the model used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The aim, she added, is to provide parliaments with sharper tools when drafting new rules.

Bahrain and Qatar revive plans for landmark 40-kilometre causeway and sea link

Bahrain and Qatar are pushing ahead with plans to build a long-awaited land bridge and a maritime route linking the two Gulf neighbours, after transport ministers met in Manama to go over details and agree on next steps. The 40-kilometre causeway between Bahrain and Qatar, along with a proposed sea route, featured prominently in talks between Bahrain's Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, His Excellency Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, and Qatari Transport Minister, H.E. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani, who arrived with a delegation on an official visit. Discussions took place at the ministry's headquarters and centred on road, rail, port and air links. The two sides also exchanged technical knowledge on transport projects and agreed to form working groups to see them through. Cooperation Shaikh Abdulla said Bahrain, under the direction of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the Cabinet led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, was keen to deepen cooperation with Qatar and build on current projects through Gulfwide efforts. According to both ministers, improving physical links between the countries could ease the movement of goods, people and vehicles, while helping trade and investment flow more easily. The bridge and sea link are expected to support joint work in tourism, logistics and industry, as well as open up jobs. Schemes Both sides want the schemes to run alongside the Gulf rail network, which is being built in stages and is due to be finished by 2030. The Bahrain–Qatar plans were described as a key piece of that puzzle. The two ministers agreed on the need for better infrastructure, logistics facilities and transport links. Action They said the focus now is on putting those plans into action with proper follow-up. Shaikh Mohammed said Qatar values its ties with Bahrain and is looking to expand work across ports, transport and digital tools. He added that shared development projects would bring benefits to people across the Arabian Gulf.

MPs review harsher penalties for deadly traffic offences

TDT | Manama Tougher punishments for traffic offences that cause injury or death are being reviewed by Parliament's Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee. The panel is studying several proposed changes to the Traffic Law in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, which has been closely involved in the process. One proposal targets drivers who run red lights and end up causing an accident. Guilty At present, those found guilty face between three months and a year behind bars, a fine ranging from BD1,000 to BD3,000, or both. If someone dies as a result, the punishment is doubled. That means a minimum of six months in prison and a fine of at least BD2,000. Speeding is also in the frame. Penalty Under Article 50 of the law, anyone caught driving more than 30 per cent over the speed limit faces a similar penalty: no less than three months in jail and a BD1,000 fine, or either one. If there is a death, or the same offence is repeated within 12 months, the sanction is doubled. The committee said it had gone over these clauses line by line and was now weighing proposed changes. It wants stronger consequences for dangerous behaviour behind the wheel, especially when it puts lives at risk. Views The Ministry of Interior has been involved throughout and continues to share its views with lawmakers. The committee said it would keep studying any new input from the ministry, particularly in light of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister's instruction to look again at penalties for road offences that result in serious harm or loss of life. That instruction, the committee said, puts the safety of road users at the top of the agenda.
