Harry Potter Veteran on the Toxic Reaction to Reboot's New Snape, Paapa Essiedu

Geek Feed08-07-2025
Like it or not, current fandom culture is now plagued with all kinds of toxicity whenever a POC actor is announced for a franchise that was dominantly white for a time. It happened with Star Wars , and it's now happening with the Harry Potter reboot with Paapa Essiedu being cast as the new Professor Snape.
With so many people complaining about the casting, a Potter vet, Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the original movies, has stepped up to bat for Essiedu. During a talk with Collider at Fans Expo, Isaacs says, ' Paapa Essiedu is one of the best actors I've ever seen in my life. I've seen some people online who are being rude about him. What they're being is racist… All the cast of the new 'Harry Potter' TV series are amazing. They will be swallowing their tongues, hopefully — you know, their digital tongues — when they see what [Paapa] does on screen.'
While there are toxic and bigoted reactions to Essiedu getting cast, there are also some concerns on the opposite end of the spectrum where they are worried that casting a black Snape actually has different implications for other characters—specifically Harry's dad who was Snape's bully.
Some think it would be hard to root for Harry's dad if he was bullying a black student; but on the contrary, some think that an easy fix for this problem is to make James Potter and the rest of his gang POC to make things… less racist? I guess bullying is more forgivable as long as it's inclusive.
We don't know when we'll get a first look at the reboot, but the main trio and adults have already been cast, and production is expected to start very soon.
No release date has been set for the Harry Potter reboot, but fans are expecting it to come out sometime next year or early 2027.

Green Lantern Aaron Pierre Allegedly Being Eyed for James Bond

The search for the next James Bond continues, and while he already has a new face in the upcoming game, a rumor is going around about the next big screen Bond—and he's someone expected to blow up in the DC space very soon. According to insider Daniel RPK (via @TheOscarRace) Aaron Pierre ( Lanterns, Rebel Ridge ) is currently being considered for the role of 007. Of course, nothing official has been said about the matter, but Pierre has already proven that he can do some intense action sequences; in fact, it was speculated that it was his role in Rebel Ridge that got him the Green Lantern job. The way the internet works these days, it's very possible that the casting of Pierre could be met with intense backlash from the anti-woke crowd, but based on his work, I think he would make for a fantastic Bond. Admittedly, I prefer my 007 to be on the more lighthearted side, and it's still not clear if Pierre will be able to deliver that, seeing that a lot of his roles have been pretty serious. Then again, he was able to pull off a ridiculous character named 'Mid-Sized Sedan' in an M. Night Shyamalan movie, so maybe James Bond won't be so much of a stretch. As a character that's constantly being poked fun at today for not surviving cancel culture, MGM has a huge hurdle to get through if they want to keep 007 relevant for newer audiences. Maybe Pierre is the key, but we'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, Pierre is expected to star in Lanterns which hits HBO Max sometime in 2026.

First Look at the Villain of Toy Story 5, LilyPad

Like it or not, Pixar is pushing forward with more Toy Story movies, and it looks like the fifth one is going to put technology front and center. Just in, we have a look at LilyPad, the tablet who will be the main antagonist of Toy Story 5. Check her out: 'Toy Story 5' was shown at France Annecy Festival today The opening scene was shown which included a shipment of Buzz Lightyear's crashing on a Island A tablet named 'Lilypad' will also be a villian in 'Toy Story 5' (Photo credit – Pixar)#Toystory5 #Pixar #Disney — TheRatedReel (@TheRatedReel) June 13, 2025 So far, we know that LilyPad has a disagreement with the toys on what's best for Bonnie. It definitely sounds like she's like Anxiety in Inside Out 2 , and it's possible we get to watch her as she makes Bonnie obsessed with screentime—just like modern-day kids (and even adults) are. As for the second photo, it's also been revealed that there's a shipment full of Buzz Lightyears that get washed up on an island. Since the series like to keep coming back to Buzz thinking that he's a space ranger, it looks like TS5 could be running with that concept by making a whole island of Buzzes who all think they're stranded on an odd planet. Though a lot of fans think that Toy Story 3 was the perfect end to the trilogy, these newer movies do feel like expanded shorts that give the characters more fun adventures as compared to serious life transitions. Sure, Woody rides off with Bo Peep in the last movie, but it does seem like he's going to find some kind of way to be wrangled back into Bonnie's life. He does keep posted with Buzz and the rest of Andy's old toys; maybe Woody and Bo are the ones that find the island of Lightyears and somehow have to save them? We'll just have to wait and see till we get the first teaser. Toy Story 5 is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026.
