Ruud van Nistelrooy considers swoop for ex-Arsenal star after Man Utd rejection
Leicester City are bidding to seal an immediate return to the Premier League after their dismal season saw them relegated back to the Championship, with Ruud van Nistelrooy unable to halt their slide
Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has targeted a move for ex- Arsenal wonderkid Sam Greenwood as he looks to secure an immediate return to the Premier League with the Foxes.
The Manchester United legend was appointed by Leicester at the end of 2024 to replace Steve Cooper but could not prevent their relegation back to the second tier as they were sent down in April.
Van Nistelrooy admitted he was unsure if he would stay on for their rebuild in the Championship but said he was hopeful of having a conversation about his future. With no news incoming, it appears the Dutchman has been backed to oversee their promotion bid and he has reportedly lined up his first transfer.
According to the Mail, the Foxes are eyeing up Greenwood, who featured for Arsenal's youth sides before joining Leeds United in 2020.
The 23-year-old forward spent last season on loan with Preston as he scored seven goals and assisted three and Leicester are said to see him as a good fit for their squad in the Championship.
Greenwood's opportunities will be limited at Leeds after Daniel Farke's men secured promotion to the Premier League, so a move to Leicester could be ideal to continue his progression.
The report adds that Sunderland - Greenwood's hometown club where he started his career - are also keen on a move. Manager Regis Le Bris will have to secure some bargain deals with the club having limited funds for transfers.
Greenwood joined Arsenal in 2018 - having rejected Manchester United in favour of a move to the Emirates - but never made a senior appearance for the Gunners and joined Leeds two years later as Marcelo Bielsa snapped him up.
He played a total of 32 games in the Premier League for the Whites, socring once, before being loaned to Middlesbrough in 2023-24.
Greenwood netted five times for Boro, playing 38 times as he was loaned out again to Preston last season.
Van Nistelrooy will be keen to have confirmation he is the man Leicester want to lead their revival after admitting he was in the dark about his future following the club's last Premier League game of the campaign.
"I would like to talk and that's the first thing that needs to happen," he told the BBC"It's been silent and it's something towards the end of the season, get things done with and then I expect to hear something.
"It's important to start talking and to see how we look into the future. It's what you need to find out. So far there hasn't been any conversation but I'm waiting for that to happen."

Tottenham admit 'error of judgement' after blocking accounts replying to post about Israeli player Manor Solomon's wedding - with player and wife left stranded amid Iran conflict
Tottenham have apologised for an 'error of judgement' after blocking some accounts that had replied to a post about Israeli player Manor Solomon's wedding on X. Spurs shared a series of 'life updates' and photographs from various players, but some replies hurled abuse towards Solomon while others referenced the Israel-Hamas conflict. Solomon married Dana Voshina in his homeland on Thursday but is now stranded there as Israel has closed its civilian airspace due to the threat of aerial attacks from Iran. Social media staff working for Tottenham manually blocked certain accounts which had replied, but have since unblocked them. The club said in a statement to The Times: 'We have been made aware of a number of X accounts that have been blocked manually by the club's social media team following posts aimed at one of our players related to the current conflict in the Middle East. 'Following an internal review, we recognise some of these posts do not meet the threshold of malicious communication defined in our policy and we acknowledge an error of judgment has been made in these instances. We have unblocked these accounts and are reviewing our internal procedures. 'The club should like to wholeheartedly apologise to those impacted. We continue to stand for peace and acceptance for all, while standing firmly against all forms of abuse and discrimination.' Solomon, 25, was on loan at Leeds United last season and scored 10 goals as Daniel Farke's side won the Championship title. Tottenham shared a photo of him as part of a selection including multiple players. In the past few days, alongside Solomon, they have had 'big life updates,' as Spurs wrote. James Maddison and his girlfriend Kennedy Alexa are expecting another pair of twins, Richarlison and his partner Amanda Araujo have had a baby, and Dejan Kulusevski has got married to fellow Swedish footballer Eldina Ahmic. According to the Times, Tottenham have an automated process for blocking accounts that direct abuse at their players. However, these particular posts did not reach the level of 'mailcious communications' required in the club's opinion, but all the same the originators were blocked. Their statement continued: 'Tottenham Hotspur is proud of the rich diversity that exists within all our communities and amongst our global fanbase. Abuse and discrimination of any kind has no place at our club, within our game or within wider society. 'In line with our published sanctions and banning policy, the club reserves the right to take action against individuals using discriminatory and/or threatening or abusive language towards players, whether in the stadium or online. 'This may extend to reporting, removing or hiding comments and, in some instances, blocking offending accounts — on all social media platforms other than X, this is an automated process carried out via an online tool deployed by the club.' Solomon is due back for pre-season training with Tottenham in early July but is unable to fly out due to the airspace closing down. 'We are constantly in regular dialogue with all our players regarding their wellbeing and welfare,' a spokesperson told the BBC. He and Dana, who have been together for seven years, married at the Kahi Events Resort in Israel, where they threw an extravagant party.

Rob Edwards poised for Middlesbrough manager's job after impressing owner
Rob Edwards is poised to take charge at Middlesbrough after impressing the owner, Steve Gibson, in interviews. Only an unforeseen 11th-hour hitch will prevent the 42-year-old former Luton manager being at the Riverside helm when Boro's players start pre-season training at the end of June. Edwards is due to replace Michael Carrick, who was sacked after the team finished a disappointing 10th in the Championship, after seeing off strong competition from the former Nottingham Forest and Leicester manager Steve Cooper and the Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Röhl. It is understood Edwards also ranked high on Gibson's shortlist in 2022 when Carrick took over. Bristol City had given serious consideration to recruiting Edwards as Liam Manning's replacement this month but he was attracted by Boro's infrastructure and the chance to reunite with the club's head of football, Kieran Scott, a former colleague at Wolves. Apart from the 35,000-capacity Riverside Stadium, Boro possess Rockliffe Park, an impressive training facility attached to a luxury hotel in a village south of Darlington. Gibson will challenge Edwards to repeat the feat he achieved with Luton in 2023 and lead the club into the Premier League. Luton then finished 18th in the top flight and were arguably a little unlucky to go down after accruing more points than any of the other five teams relegated in the past two seasons. Luton are freshly installed in League One after a disastrous campaign that included Edwards being sacked in January. The former Wales, Aston Villa and Wolves defender coached England's Under-16s before leading Forest Green Rovers to promotion from League Two in 2022. A brief spell at Watford preceded Edwards's installation at Luton and he swiftly choreographed promotion via the playoffs. Gibson is believed to have been impressed by Edwards's extensive knowledge of Boro's squad, broad tactical blueprint, commitment to youth development and candour regarding his final few months at Luton.
