UP CM expresses grief over Barabanki stampede, announces aid of ₹5 lakh
The UP CM also directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations.
His Office X account also shared a post that said the CM expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the unfortunate accident in Barabanki's temple.
The post read, "Chief Minister Shri @myogiadityanath Ji Maharaj has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in an unfortunate accident at the Shri Avsaneshwar Mahadev Temple premises in Barabanki district and extended his condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased."
"Maharaj Ji has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations. Maharaj Ji has prayed to Lord Mahadev, the Supreme Deity, to grant salvation to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to the injured," the post further added.
Two people have died and over 30 others injured in a stampede-like situation after an electric wire fell on a tin shed, causing many people to come in contact with the live wire at a temple in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki early on Monday morning.
The incident happened at the Awsaneshwar Mahadev temple at 2:30 am, where devotees had lined up for darshan on the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan. Those injured people were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Haidergarh and Trivediganj.
"The incident happened in the Awsaneshwar temple at around 2-2.30 am. Some people came in contact with electric wires, which caused panic. A total of 29 people were brought to the Community Health Centre in Haidergarh. One of them was referred to the district hospital. His condition is out of danger. Nine people were taken to the community health centre Trivediganj, out of which two were brought dead and the remaining seven are out of danger," Chief Medical Officer Awadhesh Prasad said.
"There were six more injured, who were taken to the community health centre... All have been discharged," he added.
District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya reached the temple premises along with senior officers.
DM Tripathi said, "Devotees came to Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple to offer prayers on Monday of the 'saavan' month. The electric wire broke and fell on the shed. Around 19 people were injured by electric shocks. The injured were taken to Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centre. Two people are in a critical situation and have been referred to the District Hospital...The law and order situation is normal here."
Some monkeys jumped onto the overhead electric wires, causing them to fall onto the tin shed. Some of those injured were taken to the Trivediganj Community Health Centre, while a few others were referred to a higher medical facility due to their critical condition.
On Sunday, a stampede took place at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, claiming the lives of eight people and leaving 30 others injured. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, when a large crowd of devotees was climbing nearly 800 steps to reach the hilltop shrine, according to officials.
Upon receiving the information, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the fire brigade arrived at the scene and initiated rescue operations.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered a magisterial inquiry and announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced Rs 2 lakh financial aid for families of the deceased from Uttar Pradesh.

According to local officials, the two deceased were identified as Prashant Kumar (16) and Ramesh Kumar (35). The state government has announced immediate relief of ₹5 lakh to the family members of both the deceased. There was a rush from 1am onwards at the temple on the third Monday of the Hindu holy month of Sawan. Over 2000 devotees were there at the time of the incident. It was an accident and rescue operations were promptly initiated following which no more casualties were reported, said additional director general (ADG) of police, Lucknow zone, Sujit Pandey who rushed to the spot under the Haidergarh police station limits, nearly 40 kilometres from the Barabanki district headquarters after the CM's directives. Pandey inspected the incident site as well as crowd management measures. Most of the injured people, or those who fainted due to the crowd rush, are back home after first aid, said Pandey who also ordered videography of the site. He said normalcy had returned at the temple and devotees are having darshan in a routine manner. District magistrate Shashank Tripathi said a stampede-like situation was reported at the Ausaneshwar temple during 'Jalabhishek at around 2.30 am'. 'Devotees were offering prayers when a monkey jumped onto an electric wire, causing it to fall on a shed. This led to an electric current passing through the structure. Medical treatment of the injured is underway. Around 19 people were injured, with two in a serious condition.' Barabanki chief medical officer (CMO) Avadhesh Yadav told media persons that 19 injured individuals were brought to the Haidergarh Community Health Center (CHC), where two were declared dead. A few others were then referred to Trivediganj CHC, while one was sent to the district hospital for further treatment. The Barabanki stampede comes a day after a similar incident in Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple where eight people died. On January 29, a stampede occurred during the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj during which several people lost their lives. On July 2, 2024, 121 people, mainly women and children, died in a stampede after a religious congregation in UP's Hathras.

Four killed in road mishap in Hisar
Four persons were killed when a Creta car collided with a truck near Hisar's Nangthala village on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. The damaged car in which four people from Rajli village died in Hisar on Sunday night. (HT Photo) The deceased have been identified as Raju, a resident of Rajli village and Ram Mehar Punia, 27, Praveen Bhadu, 28, and Ravinder Sharma, 24; all residents of Kirori village in Hisar. Raju was Ram Mehar's brother-in-law. Except Praveen, all of them were married and they were unemployed. According to police officials, the incident took place around 1 am on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday when a truck loaded with fertiliser was going towards Agroha from Barwala on a single road with no divider when the Creta came from the opposite side and both the vehicles collided near Nangthala village. 'Raju had gone to give Kothli (sweets box given to sister in the month of Sawan) to his sister at her in-laws house in Kirori village. From there, he along with his brother-in-law Ram Mehar and two others were returning to his village Rajli on Sunday night. The incident was so severe that police had to cut out the doors of the car to take out bodies. The car was damaged badly,' he added. He further said that the bodies were sent to Maharaja Agrasen Medical College in Agroha and an investigation has been initiated in the case, adding the truck driver has been booked for rash driving and causing death due to negligence.

2 electrocuted, 46 hurt as loose power line causes chaos at Barabanki temple
Lucknow: Two devotees were electrocuted, and 46 others sustained minor electric shocks after an electric wire snapped and fell onto a tin shed inside the premises of the Shri Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple in Haidergarh tehsil of Barabanki district on Monday morning. The incident that occurred during the Jalabhishek rituals during the holy month of Shrawan when the temple was crowded with devotees led to a stampede-like situation. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed "deep sorrow" over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. The state govt has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister's Discretionary Fund. DGP Rajeev Krishna told reporters in Lucknow that the casualties were caused due to the electrocution because of a monkey. He said that senior officials, including the zonal and range-level officers, visited the spot. "Two people unfortunately died in the incident, which was caused due to electrocution and not because of any stampede. Almost all of the injured have been discharged from hospital after treatment. However, a controversy erupted after a video statement by Uttar Pradesh Scheduled Caste Commission chairperson Baijnath Rawat went viral. In the video, Rawat contradicted the official explanation, saying that eyewitnesses alleged a home guard had struck a baton near the corridor, causing the wire to snap and fall, leading to the electrocution. "This is a deeply unfortunate incident. The actual cause can only be confirmed through a thorough investigation," he said. Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak has ordered a high-level investigation. A report has been sought from the DM within 24 hours. "Instructions have been given to investigate the causes of the incident and to take necessary steps to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future at our temples and shrines," he said. According to police, the incident occurred around 2:10 am when an electric current spread through the tin-shed corridor erected for the devotees performing Jalabhishek. According to the temple management committee manager Vinod Giri, the temple doors were opened around 1 am, and devotees began entering the temple through the corridor after bathing in the nearby Gomti river. The rituals continued smoothly for over an hour before the corridor turned into a scene of chaos when several devotees collapsed upon coming in contact with an electrified metal pipe near the tin shed. Ranjana Pandey (27), who travelled from Haidergarh with her husband, said, "People were trampling over one another. I screamed for help, but no one could hear me. This was not how we imagined our Sawan darshan." According to Gulshan (19) from Bhakosa village, "We came for Shiva's blessings, but were met with terror. There was no proper wiring, no officials inside. Everyone was focused on managing the crowd outside. What about those inside?" According to Barabanki DM Shashank Tripathi, the electric wire—part of the temple's internal wiring system—broke after monkeys jumped on it, causing it to fall directly onto a metal shed under which devotees had gathered. As a result, several people came in contact with live electricity. "Two persons died of electrocution on the spot. They were identified as Ramesh Kumar (28), son of Ram Sajeevan, a resident of Nakta Sarehiya Kothi, Haidergarh, and Prashant Kumar (17), son of Ram Kripal, a resident of Mubarakpur, Haidergarh. Their bodies were sent for postmortem, which confirmed electrocution as the cause of death. The bodies were later handed over to their families for final rites," said Tripathi. The district administrative officials said that all other devotees sustained minor electric shocks and were taken to the district hospital. All have since been discharged and returned home in stable condition. "The situation was brought under control swiftly, and the temple premises were secured. Law and order remain normal, and devotees continue to perform darshan and puja at the temple," said Barabanki superintendent of police Arpit Vijayvargiya.
