2036 Olympic Games bid: Ahmedabad officially put forward as host city as Indian delegation meets with IOC in Lausanne

Indian Express9 hours ago
Just days after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) paused the process of selecting hosts for future Games, an Indian delegation met the top brass of the world body in Lausanne on Tuesday, confirming – for the first time officially – that Ahmedabad is the country's choice to stage 'a future edition' of the mega event.
The high-level group that made its way to Switzerland included representatives of the union sports ministry, the Gujarat government, as well as Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha.
The process was conducted despite new IOC chief Kirsty Coventry announcing in her first media interaction recently that the process to select host cities has been halted as members wanted more say in the matter. With Brisbane hosting the 2032 edition, 2036 is the next Summer Games on the table, and India has officially announced its bid.
'The discussions provided a vital platform for the Indian delegation to articulate their vision for hosting a future Olympic Games in Amdavad (Ahmedabad). Concurrently, they gained invaluable insights from the IOC regarding the requirements for the Olympic Games and its ambitions for the future of the Olympic Movement,' a press release from the touring party said.
Though it had been widely believed that Ahmedabad was the government's choice to host the Olympics, it's the first time it has been officially communicated to the IOC.
The release added that an Olympics in India would 'serve as a catalyst to elevate Indian sport, offering 600 million young Indians their first opportunity to witness the Olympics on home soil. It would be a generational springboard for socio-economic development, innovation, education, and youth pride, advancing both India and the Olympic Movement. The bid embraces the Indian ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family – and will welcome the world as one during the Games.'
Gujarat sports minister Harsh Sanghavi said hosting the Olympics will be a significant development for the state. 'We are eager to be a true partner to the IOC in the coming months of this process and, hopefully, in the years to come, as we work together to realise this shared ambition,' he said after the interaction.
Usha stated: 'The Olympic Games in India would not just be a spectacular event, they would be one of generational impact for all Indians.' Apart from India, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey and Chile are said to be among the other bidders for the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The ongoing process to select future hosts was deemed to be on pause as IOC members expressed reservations about the current rules, in which they have virtually no say. Coventry said a working group will be formed to 'review how the future hosts are selected and when'.
'There was overwhelming support from the IOC members for a pause to be done and a review of the future host election process and we will be setting up a working group to look into this,' Coventry had said after chairing her maiden Executive Board meeting in Lausanne. 'Firstly, members want to be more engaged in the process and secondly, there was a very big discussion on when the next host will be awarded.'

Kuldeep Yadav's unfair treatment unmasked as Gambhir, Gill receive stern warning: ‘…how do you justify his exclusion'

Jul 02, 2025 06:52 AM IST Kuldeep Yadav has made a strong case for selection in India's playing XI for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, with former cricketer Mohammad Kaif voicing firm support for the spinner. Kaif stated that it would be unfair to overlook Kuldeep, given his recent performances and the impact he can have in the middle overs. The left-arm spinner brings a unique variety to the Indian bowling attack, but despite that, he has not been able to cement his place as the first-choice spinner in the side. In their bid to bolster the batting depth, India have frequently opted for a batting all-rounder, which has often worked against Kuldeep's inclusion in the XI despite his proven bowling credentials. Kaif pointed out earlier that Ravichandran Ashwin was preferred over him in the XI, but now that he is retired, head coach Gautam Gambhir and newly appointed captain Shubman Gill received a stern message. "It will be unfair if Kuldeep Yadav doesn't get into the playing XI for second Test. He has just played 13 Tests in 8 he was kept out because of Ashwin now how do you justify his exclusion," Kaif wrote on X. However, the veteran all-rounder failed to make much impact and even faced scrutiny for not using the rough well on Day 5 as India failed to defend the 371-run target. In his last four Tests, Jadeja has picked up just five wickets across 110 overs, averaging a massive 78, at a strike rate of 132 and an economy rate of 3/54. Three of these wickets have been that of lower-order batters. These four Tests include those in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour to Australia and the first Test against England. Jadeja has managed only 171 runs at an average of 28.50 in those last four Tests, with his lone half-century coming in Brisbane against Australia.

What India need to plan for in the second Test against England

IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah is available for India's second Test against England. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said so on Monday. Captain Shubman Gill repeated that on Tuesday. Whether Bumrah will play in the match starting on Wednesday, though, is another matter altogether. Bumrah's likely absence is one of the main things the Indian team has to contend with, after going down 1-0 in the five-match Test series. Defeat in the first Test would have been particularly galling because India dominated that match for large parts. However, they could not shut England out of the game and paid the price. IND vs ENG: Why did India pick a bowling combination they had little faith in for a high-stakes Test series? While Gill was very clear that a call on Bumrah would be taken as late as possible, the indications were that India would be without their best bowler - and indeed the world's best bowler - for the second Test at Edgbaston. The captain and the coaching staff have repeatedly said that Bumrah was going to be available for only three Tests. It makes sense, then, to have him play the third Test at Lord's rather than this one. Unless Bumrah can actually play four Tests instead of three. But if he can, it would mean Bumrah plays three consecutive Tests, because the gap between the fourth and fifth Test is too small for Bumrah to play both. Assuming he does not play, the question India have to wrestle with is, how best to take 20 wickets. 'It is difficult, but at the end of the day, we have picked the best players in India in this squad,' Gill said on the eve of the second Test. 'It's not impossible. The other bowlers have also performed well, that's why they are playing for the country. We have a great pool of talent. He added, 'We knew before the series that he would only be playing three Test matches, so we had all the different combinations we might go with, depending on the pitch. You definitely do miss your best bowler if he's not playing, but we had that sorted before the series.' Can India bring in Kuldeep Yadav as their spinner, because he is India's best wicket-taking option after Bumrah? The issue is, the other two spinners - Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar - offer much more with the bat. And India will be wanting some batting insurance after two spectacular lower-order collapses in the first Test. 'If you are going with an extra spinner, the only thing you have to see is how do you manage him on Day 1, if you are bowling on Day 1,' explained Gill. 'If at all, there is anything on these kinds of pitches, it is on Day 1 in the first couple of sessions. The main call you have to take is how to manage your spinner on Day 1.' However, England's unusually hot summer has made it easier to contemplate a two-spinner attack. 'You don't usually see two spinners playing in England, but the weather has not been typical. It's been quite hot,' said Gill. 'Last game also, we felt that if we had another spinner in the fourth innings, the game could have been closer. When the ball gets old, we also felt it's easier for spinners to contain runs than the fast bowlers. Maybe a second spinner on these pitches, even if they can't take wickets, they can contain the scoring till the second new ball becomes available. If we get a similar wicket to the first Test, then a second spinner won't be a bad option. 'Our first priority on these pitches is always how we can get 20 wickets, rather than playing that extra batter.' So Gill left the door open for India to include Kuldeep. However, he also pointed out how that would be tricky if India finds themselves bowling on Day 1. Gill was also categorical in saying that the team could not afford to repeat the sloppiness from the first Test - collapsing with the bat, spilling too many catches, and not bowling consistently. 'We did play well in a lot of moments, but in certain moments, we didn't just play badly, we played very badly,' he said. 'You cannot have a phase that is so bad that you are out of the game.' India have said the right words and prepared in the right manner for the second Test. Now they'll need to translate that to results on the field.

There is no pressure, it is my responsibility: Bengal Warriorz's Devank Dalal

Kolkata, July 1 (UNI) The Bengal Warriorz, owned by Capri Sports, have begun preparing for what is expected to be an exciting season of the Pro Kabaddi League. Season 12 of the PKL will see the Bengal Warriorz, who were the champions in Season 7, showcase new talent with fresh faces, and a renewed determination, in their quest for glory. The Bengal Warriorz made a statement at the PKL Player Auction with the acquisition of the very talented raider Devank Dalal. The young raider, who was bought for INR 2.205 crore, was the most expensive Indian player at the Auction. But that doesn't worry him at all. 'I am feeling very good that the Bengal Warriorz & Capri Sports has placed so much faith in me, at the Auction. I feel happy and nice about the fact that I got the top bid amongst the Indian players in the PKL Auction. Bengal Warriorz team is a new team and hence this season will be a fresh start. The Bengal Warriorz team will do everything to have a successful season,' said Devank Dalal. Season 11 was the big breakthrough year for the dynamic Devank Dalal, as he set the mat on fire with his fast and agile raiding. Devank ended the season with 301 points which included 18 Super 10sand was by far the most impressive raider during the course of the season. Earlier in the year, the young raider was crowned the 'Best Player' in the 71st Senior National Men's Kabaddi Championship. Looking towards the upcoming season, Devank believes there is no pressure. 'Last year, I was unsure how the season would play out. But eventually it worked out well. Now I know that I will play for sure, and there is a responsibility on my shoulders, but I am confident about doing well. I don't see this is as pressure. I see it as my responsibility towards my team, the Bengal Warriorz fans, and I enjoy fulfilling my responsibilities in my own way,' he added. When asked about the team's bonding in pre-season, since the auction, Devank said, 'The team is a healthy mix of youth and experience. We are constantly speaking with each other, the players, coaches and even the management. And it has been quite enjoyable so far, which is good for the team.' For Devank, this is a huge moment in his career. There was a time when a head injury almost brought his career to a screeching halt. However, the Army man, who had led his team to the final of the PKL last season, is grateful for the change of fortune in his life. 'I am grateful for where I am now and I feel very good. In Kabaddi, there will be tough times, but I never thought of walking away from the sport. I always felt, we should face the challenges and work hard in training, and not take too much pressure during the tough times. With God's blessings, I just continued to practice hard and I am glad it worked out,' the raider said. Before signing off, Devank had a message for the Bengal Warriorz fans, and the people of Bengal. 'I request the fans of Bengal Warriorz to keep supporting and cheering for us, and would like to request all the Kabaddi fans to watch us and support us. The fans support and love really motivates us as a team.' UNI RKM
