Pune: The PCMC on Tuesday decided to offer a 50% discount in general tax for properties in the red zone from the next financial year, prompting protest from several housing societies.
The tax waiver proposal was approved in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)'s standing committee and general body meetings. A senior official from the property tax department said the decision, effective from April 1, 2026 (for the 2026-27 fiscal), would apply only to property owners who clear all their pending dues.
Pimpri Chinchwad municipal commissioner Shekhar Singh told TOI that the civic body was unable to provide many facilities like schools and sports facilities to the residents in the red zone area.
Hence, offering them some concession in the property tax was under consideration. "The residents will get a 50% waiver on the general tax component mentioned in the property tax bill," he said.

Over 43,000 properties around Dehu Road Ordnance Depot and Dighi Magazine depot fall within the red zone. According to officials, a 2,000-yard area around Dehu Road Ordnance Depot and a 1,200-yard area around Dighi Magazine Depot are considered red zones.
Construction activities are prohibited there, as per the Works of Defence Act, 1903.
Avinash Shinde, the assistant municipal commissioner and the head of the PCMC's property tax department, said the waiver would be applicable to non-residential properties, including industrial units operating from Talawade. Over 3,000 industrial units in and around Talawade are in the red zone area.
While the civic body hopes to recover long-pending dues from property owners in the red zone through this move, housing societies strongly opposed it. "This is an injustice to those who pay their taxes regularly. We also do not receive adequate facilities from the municipal corporation despite paying taxes," said Sanjeevan Sangle, the chairman of Chikhali-Moshi Pimpri Chinchwad Housing Societies Federation, after writing a letter to the municipal commissioner over the issue.
Sangle said offering a discount for properties in the red zone was like promoting unauthorised constructions because all these structures are illegal.

'India like Mercedes, Pakistan dump truck': Asim Munir makes odd analogy; inadvertently admits vast gap

TOI Correspondent from Washington: Between expansive threats against India from US soil and bragging about Pakistan's oil and mineral wealth that would lift the country from a morass, Pakistan's military chief embarrassed himself and his country by inadvertently admitting where it currently stands vis-a-vis India -- in the pits. "India is shining a Mercedes coming on a highway like Ferrari, but we are a dump truck full of gravel. If the truck hits the car, who is going to be the loser?" Munir reportedly said at a Pakistani community event in Tampa, Florida. Munir's "crude analogy" as he himself put it, drew peals of laughter on social media for its description of Pakistan, with jokes about the dump truck breaking down or overturning even before it got the Merc. Munir also talked up the Pakistani diaspora -- sections of which allied to incarcerated PTI leader Imran Khan are protesting his visit -- borrowing freely from former Indian prime minister Vajpayee quote that immigrating to US is not a "brain drain but a brain gain." With strong partnerships growing with the US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and China, and with 64% of its population being dynamic youth, Pakistan's future is bright, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Best Method for a Flat Stomach After 50 (It's Genius!) Pakistan's bilateral trade with US currently stands at around $ 10 billion compared to India's $ 135 billion, but Munir is pitching the country's purported oil and mineral wealth, first promised by prime minister Z.A. Bhutto 50 years ago and never realized, to win back US interest. While Munir was speaking at the ballroom of the Hyatt in Tampa, dissidents allied to Pakistan's incarcerated PTI leader protested outside. They have called for similar protests in Brussels, Belgium, where Munir is headed to on Sunday.

Shravan effect: Chicken and egg sales down by 30%

Visakhapatnam: Chicken prices have slightly increased to Rs 200 per kg from Rs 180 per kg, while egg prices have decreased to Rs 6 per piece from Rs 7 across Andhra Pradesh. However, traders claim that the consumption of chicken and eggs has decreased by around 30% due to the holy month of Shravan, during which many people shun non-vegetarian food. According to Mohan, a meat trader in Vizag city, the sales of dressed broiler chicken decreased significantly, from 300 kgs every sunday to 200 kgs. He expects sales to further decline in the last week of August due to the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Poultry farmers are struggling to sustain their businesses due to low chicken prices. K Srinu, a poultry farmer in the Vizag region, stated that they need to get at least Rs 130 per kg for live birds to sustain some profits, but they are currently getting much lower prices. The farmers are also facing increased input costs due to rising poultry feed prices. The chicken prices have been dropping since June, after reaching Rs 260 per kg in May. The farmers are finding it challenging to maintain their businesses due to the low prices and increasing costs, they added.
