Browns CB Martin Emerson Jr. suffers Achilles tendon injury in practice; team awaiting MRI results
Emerson got hurt while covering a wide receiver during a 7-on-7 drill. He dropped to the ground in pain and screamed before being carted off the field with a towel covering his head.
A team spokesman said Emerson, a third-round round pick in 2022, will undergo an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury. The team fears he has a rupture, which would end Emerson's season just as it was starting.
Before practice, Emerson spoke with reporters and said he was looking forward to bouncing back from a subpar season in 2024. The 24-year-old has 202 tackles, four interceptions, a fumble recovery and sack in three seasons.
Emerson didn't have an interception last season and said he battled some unspecified injuries.
'As the year went along, my body was just kind of on a downward spiral,' he said. 'Just had to do some soul searching, man. Pray, stay close to God and just work my tail off. Honestly, that's the only thing that could kind of get me out of that slump, was the work. Put in the work and just come back and be ready.'

Emerson said he added 6 pounds of muscle to be better prepared to handle the rigors of a 17-game schedule.
His likely loss is another blow to a Cleveland defense looking to rebound from a poor season and already short-handed with linebackers Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (neck injury) and Jordan Hicks (retired) ruled out.
With Emerson out, Greg Newsome will likely move into the No. 2 corner spot opposite Pro Bowler Denzel Ward. Both Emerson and Newsome also played some nickel back, covering slot receivers. Cameron Mitchell would be the top candidate for full-time nickel duties.

PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Jorge Costa, who captained Porto to the 2004 Champions League title, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest, the club said. He was 53. Costa, a central defender who made 50 international appearances for Portugal, was Porto's director of football at the time of his death. A year earlier, he lifted the second-tier UEFA Cup. Costa also helped Porto win eight Portuguese league titles. He spent a short period on loan at English team Charlton in the 2001-02 season. 'To hear of a life taken at 53 is never nice to hear, but he's a former teammate who had such a great standing in the game and captained a Champions League winning side,' said Steve Brown, chair of Charlton's ex-players' association. Teddy Bridgewater set to return to the NFL with the Buccaneers to back up Baker Mayfield
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Teddy Bridgewater is nearing a return to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said Bridgewater is visiting the team and the Bucs plan to sign him. The Buccaneers will be the eighth team in 12 seasons for the 32-year-old Bridgewater. Bridgewater coached his former high school in Miami to a Class 3A state championship last fall and then returned to the NFL in late December to serve as a backup to Jared Goff for the playoff-bound Lions. He would provide insurance for the four-time defending NFC South champions behind Baker Mayfield. The Buccaneers also have veteran Kyle Trask, who has thrown 11 passes in four seasons since he was a second-round pick in 2021. Mayfield returned to practice Tuesday after missing a couple of days because of a hand contusion. Bridgewater said last month that he was suspended from coaching Miami Northwestern High School because he provided players with financial benefits that he says he reported to the school. 'I'm not going anywhere,' Bridgewater said on social media post. 'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Bridgewater, a first-round pick by Minnesota in 2014, is 33-32 as a starter and made the Pro Bowl after his second season when he led the Vikings to an 11-5 record. He also spent time with the Jets, Saints, Panthers, Broncos and Dolphins. Bridgewater has completed 66.4% of his passes for 15,120 yards, 75 touchdowns, 47 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating. Jets' Mason Taylor out at least a week with high ankle sprain; Tyrod Taylor dealing with knee injury
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor has a high ankle sprain that will keep him sidelined for at least a week. Taylor, a second-round pick out of LSU, had been one of the bright spots on offense for the Jets during the first few weeks of training camp. The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor didn't practice Monday or Tuesday after a day off Sunday. High ankle sprains often take several weeks to heal. But Coach Aaron Glenn, who announced the nature of the injury after practice Tuesday, doesn't believe Taylor's progress will be hampered by missing some practice time this summer. 'He's a damn good player,' Glenn said. 'He has the pedigree of being an NFL player because of his dad. I think he's going to be just fine. I'm not worried about that player at all.' Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor has a knee injury that is being evaluated. The 36-year-old Taylor is expected to back up starter Justin Fields this season. 'Listen, we all know he's an older player and obviously when you get to that point, there's some wear and tear,' Glenn said. 'So we wanted to make sure we get it taken care of so he can be ready for us when the season starts.' Glenn added that the knee issue isn't expected to keep Taylor sidelined for long. 'I don't see it as a long-term (thing),' the coach said. 'But I don't want to just stamp that right now, but I am sure it is not.'
