Highland Park residents and first responders enjoy 2025 National Night Out ‘We love our community‘
Previous National Night Out events in Highland Park were held at City Hall, 1707 St. Johns Avenue. For 2025, banner sunset weather at nearly 80 degrees prevailed at Hidden Creek Aquapark, 1220 Fredrickson Place.
Attendees could swim, enjoy free treats including pizza slices, popsicles, and drinks, visit the community table midway for more complimentary items, dance to disc jockey music, pet animals in the petting zoo, try the touch a truck opportunity, and watch a drone demonstration.
Climbing into the driver's seat of a touch a truck vehicle was Wylie Boyd, 10, a rising fifth-grader from Highland Park.
'We love our community,' said Wylie's mother, Melanie Boyd, of the Highland Park High School Class of 1995.
'It's nice to get together and have a nice, safe, fun environment and activity where everybody can have fun of all ages,' Melanie Boyd said.
Highland Park's National Night Out was among many held in Lake County. As a parent, 'We want everybody to feel safe in the community,' Boyd added.
The opening ceremony featured the Highland Park Police Honor Guard with national anthem vocalist Kaylyn Taylor Baldwin.
Highland Park Patrol Officer Travis Dragicevich, a (USMC) United States Marine Corps veteran with military service years from 1997 to 2001, held the American flag for honor guard duty.
It feels 'wonderful' to have the honor to carry the American flag, Dragicevich said.
The Community – The Anti-Drug Coalition (CTAD) community partner table had a midway presence, staffed by Lindsay Sweet of Lincolnshire, CTAD executive director, the parent of Hadley Sweet, 13, a rising eighth-grader. Hadley also helped that evening, passing out inflatable beach balls to event attendees.
'We try to get our message out as often as possible,' Lindsay Sweet said. 'It's important to talk to kids about making healthy choices and that conversation begins when they're little.'
The swimming pool, tube slides, and splash pad play area were busy with patrons. Asahel Salmeron, 4, of Gurnee, went down the kiddie water slide for younger children.
'It's really nice what they're doing for the community,' said Asahel's father, Pablo Salmeron, about National Night Out. 'The kids have fun, we're really grateful.
'And thanks to the police officers for what they do for the community,' Pablo Salmeron said.
The Highland Park Fourth of July parade shooting took place in 2022, resulting in the deaths of seven people with many injuries.
'It was very difficult for a lot of people,' Salmeron recalled. 'I did have some friends who were affected by that … they lost their family member(s). But eventually, we've got to move on and something like this (National Night Out) helps the community out, definitely, so thank you,' Asahel's father added.
Levi Ruby, 10, a rising fifth-grader from Highland Park, climbed into the seat of a large red fire engine in the touch a truck-secured parking lot.
'I really want to say that I appreciate the first responders,' said Levi's father, Matt Ruby. 'We love seeing them out here, and it's so nice when they can come and show skills to the kids.'
School starts this month for Levi and for many other Lake County children.
Summer has 'gone way too fast,' Matt Ruby said. 'I can't believe it.'

CINCINNATI – After the viral beatdown in downtown Cincinnati that captured the nation's attention, a candidate for Cincinnati mayor is pointing to relaxed bail policies and mismanagement of police funding as the primary cause of chaos wreaking havoc on citizens. In a news conference days after the assault, Mayor Aftab Pureval denounced the attack while vowing to find the assailants and hold them accountable. "This was an awful incident, and our law enforcement has been working quickly and effectively to bring all responsible to justice," Pureval said. "Let me be clear, there is no place for violent crime in Cincinnati, whether it's a fight or gun violence. We will pursue those responsible, and we will hold them accountable no matter who they are." Authorities spent days searching for the six suspects charged in the assaault, and the final arrest was made over one week after the video went viral. Patrick Rosemond, 38, Jermaine Matthews, 39, Montianez Merriweather, 34, DeKyra Vernon, 24, Dominique Kittle, 37, and Aisha Devaughn, 25, face various charges for their alleged roles in the attack that left six people injured. Pureval has since come under fire for his handling of public safety within the city, with only 11 officers stationed in the downtown area on the night of the attack. Republican mayoral candidate Cory Bowman points to what he believes is widespread mismanagement within the city serving as the root cause of the unsafe conditions. "There are things from City Hall that are showing that the police are not supported the way they need to," Bowman, Vice President JD Vance's half-brother, told Fox News Digital. "They are unable to do their jobs because they've been told time and time again that they have to use restraint in certain things instead of enforcing the law. They're told to dial back, and then what happens is that we have prosecutors and judges that have a catch-and-release system." Standing on a street corner in the city's Over-the-Rhine (OTR) district, which had already seen two deadly shootings this week, Bowman blamed the city's relaxed policies for violent offenders bailing out of jail. "So many officers have come to me, and they've said they don't even see a point in making arrests because the criminals are just going to be back on the streets the very next day," Bowman said. "We have to put pressure on all the judges and prosecutors, and we have to be able to let the officers know, 'Do your job, see your training and do your job properly, and you're going to have all of City Hall to back you up in that circumstance." Bowman looked to the recent viral brawl that captured the country's attention, pointing out that one of the alleged assailants, Jermaine Matthews, was free after posting bail. "It's one thing to see crime," Bowman told Fox News Digital. "It's another to see crimes that are noticeably preventable by locking up criminals and giving them the charges and the sentences that they deserve." According to citywide data, crime in Cincinnati is on par with last year's numbers and is down by roughly 200 reported offenses since August 2023. To date, the city has approximately 15,000 reported offenses with instances spiking over the summer months. Bowman asserts Pureval is not doing enough to support the community and members of law enforcement when it comes to protection and safety, citing the police department's lateral hiring process taking months to beef up authorities' presence on the streets. "We have to get all the help that we can get," Bowman said. "Whether it be from the state or federal [level], we have to be able to accept all the help that we can get to be able to take care of crime that's happening in our downtown area." "So, 64% of the city's budget goes toward public safety. But what we have to understand is that there are initiatives and programs that are dividing the city from the police department when it comes to where those funds should be going." He pointed to numerous community involvement initiatives he believes are draining funding from the police department and putting public safety on the line. "There are all these initiatives that have been stacked on top of each other for years that are draining the funds out of our city budget," Bowman said. "All those resources need to go back into the police department. We need to have higher amounts of patrols. We need to have a higher recruiting class. And we need to be able to have a strong stance against what's going on." The mayor's office did not respond to Fox News Digital's multiple requests for comment.

Douglas Murray: Mamdani smears Cuomo for allegedly talking to Trump —and yet associates himself with Mahmoud Khalil
'Democratic socialist' Zohran Mamdani is trying to smear one of his rivals by association. Yesterday the Democratic mayoral nominee claimed Wednesday that Andrew Cuomo recently spoke to President Trump by phone. Mamdani claimed that the two men had been 'conspiring about the fate of this city.' Advertisement For his part, former Gov. Cuomo has denied that he has even had a phone call with the president. But so what if he had? Is the president of the United States — a man who won the popular vote last November — so fringe that no candidate for mayor of New York should even speak with him? Advertisement That seems to be Mamdani's view. Keep away from fringe, wacko figures like, er, the president of this country. But if Mamdani is so keen on guilt by non-association, why not apply the same standard to him? To that end it would be good to know why Mamdani has been so happy to advocate for, associate with and even campaign alongside Mahmoud Khalil, formerly of Columbia University. 'A moral victory' Advertisement Readers will remember that Khalil was the former student who was weirdly living with his wife on student accommodation but whose main occupation seemed to be leading student protests at Columbia since October 2023. It is Khalil's group — Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) — that declared the Oct. 7 massacre to be 'a moral, military and political victory' and declared that as an organization CUAD was 'fighting for the total eradication of Western civilization.' After discovering that Khalil — a foreign national — had lied on his visa application, praised terrorists and organized unrest in New York, ICE detained Khalil. He promptly became one of the great poster boys of the anti-American left. Advertisement They decided that nobody in America will be free until Mahmoud Khalil is free. Since his release from ICE detention, Khalil has been playing the same sob story as his wife did while he was in custody — claiming that America had been exceptionally mean to him. Apparently all he wanted to do was to study in the US. Something he appears to have spent almost zero time actually doing — preferring the path of agitation. 'Had to reach' Now, in an interview out this week, Khalil has once again exposed his real views and intent. In an interview with Ezra Klein of The New York Times, he talked about why he came to America in the first place. Advertisement He said that he was attracted to 'the quality of education' in this country, knew about Columbia because of its reputation in 'Palestinian circles' and was pleased to get a scholarship in 2018. In fact, he seems to have found one of the most radical campuses in America to be not radical enough for him. But it is his statements about Hamas and the October 7th massacre that are most disgusting. Asked about his reaction to the events of that day, he said: 'It felt frightening that we had to reach this moment in the Palestinian struggle.' Apart from asking who the 'we' is in that sentence, I'd love to know why Khalil thinks that raping women and massacring young people at a dance party is some kind of inevitability. According to Khalil, 'We [again] couldn't avoid such a moment.' Advertisement 'Palestinians are here' Pushed lightly on why it was necessary to murder babies and kidnap pensioners, Khalil went on to explain that the problem was that the Israelis were trying to make a peace and normalization deal with the Saudis. Something that would have added to the extraordinary success of the Abraham Accords that had been signed with other Arab countries. Khalil thinks that the idea of 'normalization' is appalling. Advertisement In his view, the Palestinians 'are not being heard' and so the atrocities and barbarism of October 7th were an 'attempt to tell the world that Palestinians are here.' That's certainly one hell of a way to tell people. 'It was not inevitable' In case it isn't obvious, this is pure apologism for Hamas. Moderate, peace-loving Palestinian voices comprehensively refute Khalil's evil view. For instance, the proud American, Gazan-born Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, said yesterday, 'Khalil invoked the repetitive and tired idea that the October 7 attack by Hamas was an inevitability, when the truth is far more straightforward and needs to be told by Gazan voices and those who are impacted by the war.' 'October 7th was a choice, not an inevitability! A choice that two psychopaths made from within Hamas' military wing, Sinwar and Al-Deif. It was not inevitable that Gaza had to be the source of the worst single-day attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust.' He went on: 'Hamas squandered billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives for a fraudulent resistance narrative.' Unfortunately, Khalil is one of many arrivals in this country who have pushed that fraudulent narrative. The same people who claim, as Khalil went on to claim in his interview with Klein, that the bloody and murderous Second Intifada [2000-2005] was a mostly 'peaceful uprising.' So, Mr. Mamdani, if Gov. Cuomo is to be smeared for having the audacity to even be reported to have spoken to the US president, what are we to make of you knowingly and repeatedly associating with a terrorist mouthpiece? What are the voters of New York to think about a candidate for mayor who is so happy to advocate for terrorists for years and associate himself even now with someone who makes such excuses for terrorism? Any candidate for mayor who thinks President Trump is a more reprehensible figure than a Hamas apologist should be nowhere near the running of this city.
