IND A vs ENG Lions: KL Rahul's century, Khaleel Ahmed's four-fer goes in vain as 2nd Unofficial Test ends in a draw
New Delhi: Chasing India A's target of 439 runs, England Lions scored 32 runs for three wickets in the second innings, after which the second unofficial Test ended in a dull draw on the fourth and final day. With this result, the two-match series also remained tied at 0-0. The first unofficial Test played in Canterbury was also a draw.
India A declared the second innings at 417 for seven with the help of brilliant half-centuries from Tanush Kotian (90 not out) and Anshul Kamboj (51 not out) and gave the host team a huge target of 439 runs. Kamboj then contributed with the ball as well and shook the top order of England Lions by dismissing Emilio Gay (05) and Jordan Cox (00).
Tushar Deshpande gave India the initial breakthrough
Tushar Deshpande (one wicket for 13 runs) got Tom Haynes (07) caught by Nitish Kumar Reddy to give India the first breakthrough. When the match was declared a draw, opener Ben McKinney was playing on 16 runs and captain James Rev was with him without opening the account.
Kotian and Kamboj shared a 149-run partnership
Kotian hit 10 fours in his innings of 108 balls and along with Kamboj shared an unbroken 149-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Both batsmen took full advantage of England's tired bowlers. Even the opposition had to try makeshift bowlers but did not get success.
Confidence was also seen in the way he completed his half-century
Kotian completed his 16th first-class half-century by playing Ben McKinney's ball towards third man for four runs in the 74th over. Kamboj completed his first half-century by taking three runs off Tom Haynes' ball in the 91st over. England Lions also took the new ball after the 80th over but they did not get any success.
Important wickets fell in the morning session
India scored at a rate of more than four and a half runs per over in the second innings. However, in the morning session, the team lost the wickets of Dhruv Jurel (28), Nitish Kumar Reddy (42) and Shardul Thakur (34). George Hill (three wickets for 39 runs) bowled Shardul on the last ball before lunch.
India got a slight lead in the first innings
India started the day at 163 runs for four wickets. Jurel hit two fours off Chris Woakes but could not play a long innings. He was caught by wicketkeeper Rev off Eddie Jack's ball. Reddy was in good rhythm but Hill bowled him out to give India the sixth blow. Shardul also played some attractive shots, but Hill sent him back to the pavilion before lunch. India A had scored 348 runs in the first innings and took a lead of 21 runs by bowling out England Lions for 327 runs.

Karun Nair poised for No. 4 duty, KL Rahul biggest positive; Reddy vs Thakur...: How India potentials performed vs Lions

India A's tour games against England Lions, comprising two four-day matches, concluded on Monday. Both fixtures—played in Canterbury and Northampton—ended in draws. But more than the results, the matches held significance for the 19 Indian players involved. For 12 of them, it was a chance to prove their mettle in foreign conditions and make a case to the BCCI selection committee. For the remaining seven, it served as valuable preparation for the upcoming five-match Test series in England, starting June 20. Although the India A team will remain in England for one final tour match—an intra-squad game against the Shubman Gill-led side in Beckenham starting next Monday (June 16)—seven players from the squad have now joined the senior team. These include Karun Nair, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Nitish Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, and Shardul Thakur. Ahead of the final preparatory game, here's a look at how these players have geared up for the England Test series. Karun Nair poised for No. 4 role: The veteran batter is not only set to make a return to the Indian Test XI for the firs time in eight years, but is poised for the vacant No. 4 role, which had belonged to Virat Kohli until his retirement last month. Earning a call up after his record-breaking Ranji Trophy show last season, Nair vindicated Ajit Agarkar's move with a double century in the first game, where he batted at No. 3, followed by scores of 40 and 15 at No. 4 in the second match. KL Rahul a big positive: The India star, who had a breakout campaign in Australia as an opener, was not initially part of the India A squad, until he reportedly made a request to the selectors to get him in after his IPL campaign ended early. Rahul utilised the chance to quickly get into the groove with a century in the first innings for the second match, followed by a fifty. However, Jaiswal, who is all set for his first Test appearance in England, showed signs of vulnerability against the moving ball. He managed 107 runs in four innings, with one score of fifty. Easwaran, on the other hand, the India A captain and the back-up opener for India, had a decent outing with a fifty each in both games, as he amassed 167 runs. Thakur vs Reddy: Unfortunately, neither made a compelling case to make the playing XI. Reddy was the frontrunner in the battle of the all-rounders, after his performance in Australia, but despite the English conditions being more suitable to his pace-bowling variety, he struggled to get breakthroughs, managing just two wickets in two matches, while scoring 135 runs in four innings, including a fifty. Thakur, on the other hand, who had lost the race to make the Indian team for the Australia tour to the Andhra star last October, needed runs to make his case, but managed just 80 runs in three innings. More worryingly, his bowling failed to trouble the batters. In the first match, he picked up two wickets, but failed to get his name in the scoresheet in the second game.

India A's first unofficial Test against England Lions had also ended in a draw in Canterbury. India A batters consumed the first two sessions on the final day to garner experience on a flat track. Jurel had hit 52 in the first innings while Reddy, who made 34 in the first essay, missed out on a half-century in the second innings. It was a productive outing for some of the Indian players as Test opener KL Rahul struck a patient 116 (168 balls, 15x4s, 1x6s) in the first innings to set up a total of 348. Karun Nair, who made a double hundred in the first game, scored 40 and 15 in the two innings of the second match while skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran bounced back to make a 92-ball 80 in the second essay. Yashasvi Jaiswal had a forgettable second unofficial Test as he was dismissed for 17 and five in the two innings. But the left-handed India opener had hit a quality 64 in the second innings of the first unofficial Test. Among the bowlers, left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed took 4/70 in the first innings while Tushar Deshpande chipped in with a couple. Kamboj took his tally to four wickets in the contest as he grabbed a two wickets each in the two innings. Brief scores: India A 348 & 417/7 decl in 92 overs (KL Rahul 51, Abhimanyu Easwaran 80, Nitish Kumar Reddy 42, Tanush Kotian 90 not out, Anshul Kamboj 51 not out; George Hill 3/64) drew with England Lions 327 & 32/3 in 11 overs (Anshul Kamboj 2/6).
