Centre approves MSP procurement for moong, groundnut in UP

Time of Indiaa day ago

Lucknow: The central govt has accepted the Uttar Pradesh govt's request to procure moong (green gram) and groundnut at the minimum support price (MSP).
During a video conference on Wednesday with union minister of agriculture and farmers' welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan, UP agriculture minister Surya Pratap Shahi informed Chouhan that during the Zaid (summer crop) season of 2024–25, moong has been sown over 1.60 lakh hectares and groundnut over 1.74 lakh hectares in the state.
He requested that these crops be procured at MSP—a request that was readily accepted by the union minister.
For the Zaid 2024–25 season, the procurement target has been set at 34,720 metric tonnes for moong and 50,750 metric tonnes for groundnut. This decision is expected to benefit a large number of farmers in Uttar Pradesh.
Chouhan also assured that, if needed, the procurement targets for moong and groundnut could be increased.
Additionally, he stated that if a proposal is received for the procurement of urad (black gram), it will also be approved.
Shahi expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union minister for the decision taken in the interest of farmers. He also urged the Centre to procure maize—currently being cultivated on approximately 4.80 lakh hectares during the Zaid season—at MSP to further boost farmers' income.

Official work in Hindi, says Haryana education min — ‘I myself do not know English'

Gurgaon: Haryana education minister Mahipal Dhanda has directed his department to conduct all official work in Hindi. "I myself do not know English, and 90% of the people in our state are far from (understanding) English. Therefore, so that people can understand official work, I have ordered all work in the education department to be done in Hindi," the minister said at a press conference in Kurukshetra on Thursday. The announcement was made days after the directorate of higher education issued an order on June 10, saying all official correspondence "must henceforth be presented in Hindi". It also specified that any communication to the education minister and the additional chief secretary (education) should be in Hindi as well. Until now, the state education department had the option to use both Hindi and English. Calling Hindi the "rastrabhasha (national language)", Dhanda said that this policy is not "anti-English". "We are not enemies of English... We are not in favour of stopping English. Knowledge of other languages is also necessary. English-medium schools are still being opened in the state. For me, language is mainly to acquire knowledge, rather than becoming a barrier in practical work," the minister said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo The Indian Constitution does not name any "national language", and both Hindi and English are recognised as "official languages". Dhanda on Wednesday pointed out that the policy is only for official communication and it is not related to academics. "What's the problem in this (policy)? It's a mode of communication, do it in any language... Hindi is better understood by people," a senior education department official in Panchkula said. Dushyant Thakran, a school teacher in Gurgaon, questioned if the policy would make any difference. "Schools are already focused on teaching children English," he said. Before this, controversy has erupted on the implementation of central govt's NEP, which pushes for a "three-language formula". Tamil Nadu govt has accused the Centre of trying to impose Hindi on the state, though the BJP govt has denied the charge as an unnecessary controversy. UP begins week-long drive against child labour

Lucknow: Marking the 'World Day against child labour', state labour minister Anil Rajbhar said that a week-long campaign against child labour will be held in the state from June 12-19. The 'Child labour prohibition week' will feature various programmes to reinforce the need for the complete eradication of child labour in the state. The govt has partnered with UNICEF to implement this programme. Rajbhar made this announcement from Geneva in Switzerland, where he is currently attending the International Labour Conference organised by the International Labour Organisation. The minister addressed a session on child labour, where he spoke about the efforts being made by the UP govt to crack down on child labour and appealed to factory owners to pledge that they would not employ children. Among initiatives taken by the UP govt, the minister spoke about the Atal residential schools, operational in 17 divisions in the state, especially for children of labourers. He urged the global community to adopt this innovative model from UP and establish similar schools worldwide to prevent children from following their parents into the field. He further said that over the past 11 years, the Indian govt achieved remarkable success in expanding social security coverage, a crucial step in ensuring that families were not forced to push their children into work. India's social security coverage grew from 19% in 2015 to 64.3% in 2025, the minister claimed, adding that with over 94 crore citizens covered, India now ranks second globally in social security coverage. The minister said that currently, around 80 lakh individuals are engaged in the gig and platform economy in India, a number projected to rise to approximately 2.4-2.5 crore by 2030. "Their social security needs must be recognised and addressed. The UP labour and employment department has already begun identifying the specific needs of these workers and is actively developing strategies and frameworks to support them," he said. Bengal's tea to be covered by Centre's weather-based insurance

Kolkata: Centre has introduced weather-based insurance for some plantation crops, including tea. Tea in Bengal, Assam and Kerala is under the scheme. In a circular issued on June 10, Union ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare said: "DA&FW, in collaboration with state govts, commodity boards under the aegis of the department of commerce, as well as the coconut development board and other stakeholders, undertook proactive steps to define scientific term sheets for some plantation crops to facilitate extending accessible, affordable crop insurance coverage to plantation farmers through the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS). " The circular asked states to expedite tender processes — for the participation of private players — by June 20 to include different plantation crops under RWBCIS with effect from this kharif season. Bijoy Gopal Chakraborty, president of CISTA, the representative body of the small tea growers, said that this was the first time a weather-based crop insurance was introduced for plantation crops. "It is a long-awaited and welcome move. We have been asking for this for some years," he added. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
