Scandinavia leads 26 St Leger hopefuls
Justify colt Scandinavia has been a relatively late bloomer, finishing fifth to Carmers in the Queen's Vase at Ascot before winning the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket.
He stepped into open company at Goodwood last week and despite being overlooked by Ryan Moore in favour of Illinois, ran out the winner.
His dual Derby-winning stablemate Lambourn would be another huge player if he turns up, as would Whirl, winner of last week's Nassau Stakes over 10 furlongs at Goodwood.
Galveston, Oaks victor Minnie Hauk, Mount Kilimanjaro, Puppet Master, Saratoga, Shackleton, Stay True and Thrice are other Ballydoyle possibles.
Carmers could have a trip to Yorkshire before his big day with Paddy Twomey considering the Great Voltigeur Stakes for his prep – or he could stay closer to home.
'The Leger entries were today and if he runs (beforehand) it will be either in the Great Voltigeur or the Vinnie Roe (at Leopardstown) and then the Leger,' said Twomey.
'Those two races are within a day of each other so we'll see which race looks more suitable.'
Other notable entries include Charlie Johnston's Lazy Griff, placed in the Derby at Epsom and the Irish equivalent, Tennessee Stud and Arabian Force.
Gordon Stakes victor Merchant was not entered by William Haggas.

LIV Golf star expects OWGR 'to do the right thing for golf'
August 6 - Joaquin Niemann expects the Official World Golf Ranking "to do the right thing for golf" as it reviews LIV Golf's latest submission to receive world rankings points for its events. The Chilean star has won a third of the 15 tournaments he has teed it up in worldwide this year and is by most accounts among the top tier of golfers on the planet. But Niemann is currently No. 103 in the OWGR because his five wins in 11 LIV Golf events in 2025 haven't accrued any rankings points. He was No. 68 after a tie for third in an Asian Tour event in February and he also tied for eighth at the PGA Championship before missing the cut at the year's final two majors. Niemann will not have an opportunity to earn more rankings points until playing a few tournaments on other tours after LIV's season concludes later this month. Niemann, 26, is among those who are hoping the OWGR softens its stance and allows players to earn points thru LIV events beginning next year. "I feel like the ranking system is not up to me, it's up to them. I'm expecting that they're going to do the right thing for golf," Niemann said on Wednesday ahead of this week's LIV Golf Chicago event. He reached as high as 15th in the OWGR before signing with LIV, but Niemann added that the world rankings don't factor into how he views himself among the game's elite players. "No, not really. It's not something that I think about to tell myself in the mirror, 'Joaco, you are No. 5,' -- no, I don't do that. That's not my job," he said. "I feel like I'm just here to do my best and try to make as many birdies as possible and to make the crowd enjoy us playing golf around the world." Despite having won five of LIV's first 11 events this year, he can still be caught by Spain's Jon Rahm for the individual title over the next two events. Rahm beat Niemann by three strokes in Chicago last year, but has yet to claim an individual title in 2025. Rahm has stayed consistent throughout the season, consistently posting top-10 results. He was among the proponents to have scores from all players count in the team competition, which Rahm's Legion XIII leads, and said the league needs to evaluate other ways it can evolve to create world rankings points opportunities. "There's a process to hopefully enter those world ranking points and at least get our foot in the door," Rahm said. "And then once we're allowed, we can see what changes can be made to earn as many as possible, keeping the integrity of what LIV Golf is about." Rahm said he hasn't been involved in conversations about further format changes, but mentioned concepts such as adding a fourth round to events and expanding the number of teams to make a cut-line more feasible "There's many possibilities that I can think of," Rahm said, adding that his ideas were purely hypothetical. "There's things we could do I think to add more world rankings points if we need it, and I'm sure there's more that I can't think of that the folks at OWGR and maybe (LIV CEO) Scott (O'Neil) or the front of the LIV office can probably tell us about to give us a little bit more of strength of field." For now, Rahm is focused on trying to track Niemann down for the individual title while having Legion XIII lock down the team title. Oh, and a little thing called the Ryder Cup, for which Rahm remains hopeful of being selected by European captain Luke Donald. "There's nothing I can confirm nor deny. But I think he has been texting me like he has been texting quite a few other players that are on that list of the possibility of getting picked," Rahm said. "Luke is extremely dedicated and very well-organized as a captain, so I think there's probably -- six automatic and then six picks, right, so there's probably about at least 10 names on top of those guys who are qualified that he's probably constantly texting. "I don't think he's actually told anybody they're in yet because it's too early. He's probably waiting until the end of August through the (FedExCup) playoffs and our events to maybe start making statements like that. Jimmy Thelin confirms Aberdeen contract talks ongoing with Shayden Morris and other Scottish Cup final heroes
A number of Dons players are into the final year of their contracts in the Granite City Jimmy Thelin has confirmed that contract talks are ongoing with Shayden Morris and several others from Aberdeen 's Scottish Cup-winning squad. The fans' favourite has been the subject of several failed bids from Luton Town. The winger, 23, is out-of-contract at the end of the season and the Dons are trying to extend that deal. The likes of captain Graeme Shinnie, Dante Polvara and Ester Sokler are others who are now in the final year of their Pittodrie contracts. Thelin admitted: 'I think it's a question for Steven (Gunn, Aberdeen's director of football), but we have on-going talks with a lot of players. Let's see.' The Swede knows that when you are successful and you have good players, like Morris, then there is going to be interest. Thelin has insisted he can't worry about what he cannot impact. It is about working with what he has, while he has it and trying to improve his players, his squad, his staff and himself. Thelin acknowledged: 'I think we always have dialogue with all our players and when the time is right, the time is right. 'I don't go into specific players, but of course we have good players and other clubs have eyes on our players also. That's the reality we live in. 'But as long as you're a player, a manager, you have to always focus where you are. 'Otherwise, you stop growing and performing. 'So it's important to always stay in the moment and then what happens, after you're controlling one way, that will happen. 'But when you're a player or a manager, you have to focus where you are.' Aberdeen's model is and has been for several years based on a player trading model. They regularly sell on talent and that has been the case in recent years from Scott McKenna to the likes of Calvin Ramsay, Lewis Ferguson, Bojan Miovski, Ross McCrorie and Ylber Ramadani. This summer has been no different. Another cup hero in Pape Gueye has since been sold to Turkish side Kasimpasa earlier this month. Thelin knows others could go before the close of the window and it is about being proactive rather than being reactive. The Aberdeen manager, when asked about more out-goings, answered: 'No, I think it's difficult to speculate. I think we're taking it day by day now, week by week and the window is still one month away from closing. 'So that's why it's so difficult to see what's going to happen in the future. We have to focus on now. "We have a competitive game on Sunday and then the rest of the thing is going on in the background. The window is open, so you never know if someone comes in for a player or if you need to rebalance your squad or whatever. 'But we have to focus right now. As long as the window is open, it's on-going work. 'Even when the window is closed, the recruitment department keeps working to the next window. I think when everybody's aligned, they're aligned then things happen.'

Crystal aiming to sparkle with Ballyroan repeat
Gerard Keane hopes a successful defence of the Tote Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday can open further doors for Crystal Black. The seven-year-old was unbeaten in all four starts last year, which saw the son of Teofilo triumph in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot before impressively landing this race by five lengths for his maiden Pattern win. Crystal Black made a return to action in the Alleged Stakes in April, finishing seven lengths adrift of Galen in fourth to end his winning streak. He subsequently underwent a wind procedure and Keane is looking forward to his stable star kick-starting his 2025 campaign, as he lines up a tilt at the final Irish Classic of season next month. 'He's coming along, he had a little bit of a hobday,' Keane said. 'So he's coming along well, we are happy with his work and as good as we can have him without a run. He's probably 90 per cent so it's a nice little race to start him back with. As long as he runs a nice race, we'll be happy. 'He's got an entry in the (Irish) Leger, so that is the plan if we think he is good enough to run in that, but that's in a month's time. 'That's the plan – Ballyroan, the Leger – and then after that we will see what's happening then.' Six-time Irish champion jockey Colin Keane is aboard for his father in the Group Three contest over a mile and a half. Sons And Lovers goes for Joseph O'Brien, the Noel Meade-trained Group-winning Layfayette also starts and Jessica Harrington has entered Sea The Boss. Johnny Murtagh's Siege Of Troy and This Songisforyou, trained by Emmet Mullins, complete the six-runner line-up.
