Five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide on June 29.

Griffin, a junior at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Georgia, stands at six feet three inches and weighs 200 pounds. According to his 247Sports player profile, he recorded 43 tackles and six sacks in eight appearances as a member of the 2026 recruiting class.
As a sophomore, he was selected to the Georgia Region 8-6A first team after recording 54 tackles and 15 sacks. Griffin also showcased his talent in the Polynesian Bowl on January 16 in Hawaii and the Navy All-American Bowl on January 11 in Texas.
Griffin also had the chance to meet former Alabama head coach Nick Saban during his recruiting process, which some believe influenced his decision to choose the Crimson Tide. However, Griffin's mother, Jay Clay, shut down those claims in an X post on Sunday.
'Let me make this clear for @zay_social recruitment when it comes to Alabama,' she wrote. 'Makes me mad to hear @KalenDeBoer can't recruit because our coach and his staff did a great job! I met Saban once, but he is not the one who offered or talked to us at any point.'

Clay's remarks about her son's recruitment process come as some have criticized Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer for not being a great recruiter compared to his predecessor, Saban. But Clay's comments prove otherwise, as she credited him and the school's outside linebacker coach, Christian Robinson, with helping develop a strong connection with her son.
'@crob45 was and is the 🐐 that got my son to Bama!' she continued. 'Love our staff and can't wait! Roll Tide.'
Alabama's 2026 recruiting class that DeBoer has helped put together also includes five-star wide receiver Cederian Morgan, four-star athlete Zyan Gibson and four-star running back Ezavier Crowell. The class is currently ranked No. 5 in the country, according to 247Sports where you can also view the full recruiting class.

2026 college football national title odds: Texas enters season as favorite, but field appears wide open

Five of the six national champions from the 2018-23 seasons went undefeated, marking an era filled with dominant teams. Last year's debut of the 12-team College Football Playoff featured a two-loss Ohio State team as national champion, which could signal that being a dominant champion is now more difficult. Advertisement The volume and ease of transfers, NIL spending and a playoff format that is more forgiving of regular-season blemishes appear to have balanced the playing field just enough compared to the recent juggernauts of 2019 LSU and 2020 Alabama. That balance is playing out in the betting odds to win the national title this season. Texas is favored on BetMGM with +450 odds. The Longhorns are No. 1 in both major preseason polls, so their position at the top of the odds board lines up, but those odds do not display much confidence in Texas as the favorite. The +450 odds imply the Longhorns have roughly an 18 percent chance of winning the national title. That's the betting way of saying this appears to be a wide-open season. Seven teams have odds of +1000 (1o-to-1) or shorter. That means the gap between Texas at the top and Alabama in the seventh spot on the odds board is relatively small. Beyond the fact that 12 teams get into the Playoff, lowering the bar to get into the postseason and giving more teams (like Ohio State last year) a chance to win it all, a lot of top programs enter this season with major question marks, especially at quarterback. Texas is getting some love for having Arch Manning, but his recruiting profile and famous last name are still carrying a lot of weight for a quarterback with only 95 pass attempts at the college level, and barely half of those came against power conference opponents. Manning is also the preseason favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, but that doesn't mean there isn't some level of uncertainty about how he will perform. Other premier programs like Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and Notre Dame are also going with first-year starters at quarterback. Despite that, those teams are all in the top eight of the preseason AP Top 25. Inexperience at quarterback isn't necessarily a detriment to winning a national title. In recent years, Mac Jones (2020 Alabama), Trevor Lawrence (2018 Clemson), Jake Coker (2015 Alabama), J.T. Barrett/Cardale Jones (2014 Ohio State), Jameis Winston (2013 Florida State), A.J. McCarron (2011 Alabama) and Cam Newton (2010 Auburn) were first-year Division I starters to win national titles (and you can include Tua Tagovailoa on that list, even though he didn't start most of the season). Teams can win it all with a first-year starter, but having a lot of top programs with new faces at quarterback does make the season harder to project. That's why the betting odds are relatively balanced among the top contenders. Advertisement Defending champion Ohio State just named Julian Sayin, a redshirt freshman and a five-star recruit out of high school, its starter for the season opener against Texas. Headline writers who like puns will be thrilled to be able to play around with QBs named Arch and Sayin, but that game should have an early impact on national title odds with the Buckeyes just below Texas at +525. Georgia and Penn State follow OSU at +700. The Nittany Lions made the semifinals last year and return quarterback Drew Allar, while Georgia will break in Gunner Stockton. Next up are Oregon and Clemson at +900. Clemson is more in the Penn State category with Cade Klubnik back at quarterback. Oregon has UCLA transfer Dante Moore stepping in after he backed up Dillon Gabriel last season. Alabama also has a relative unknown at quarterback in Ty Simpson, who was named the starter a week ago. Simpson will be tasked with getting Alabama back into national title contention after the Crimson Tide missed the 12-team playoff last season. Last year's championship game loser Notre Dame is +1200. The Fighting Irish haven't even named a starting QB yet, but remain in the top 10 of both the preseason polls and in the betting odds. The Irish are a bit lower in the betting odds than the polls. ND is fifth in the Coaches' Poll and sixth in the AP Top 25, but only eighth on BetMGM's odds board to win the national title. LSU is the last team before a solid dropoff in the odds. The Tigers are +1400 with returning quarterback Garrett Nussmeier guiding the optimism around Brian Kelly's team. Betting/odds links in this article are provided by partners of The Athletic. CBS Sports makes 'bold prediction' for Alabama football in Year 2 under Kalen DeBoer

Year 2 is always an important year for any college football coach at a Power Four program, especially one at a school as rich in tradition as the Alabama Crimson Tide. Kalen DeBoer is hoping his 2025 Alabama team, ranked No. 8 in both the preseason top 25 polls, avenges a four-loss campaign from last year and, at a minimum, returns to the College Football Playoff. Many analysts, including Fox Sports' Joel Klatt, ESPN's Mark Schlabach and others, believe they will. With kicking less than two weeks away, it's the time of year when the sport's top "insiders" lend themselves to bold predictions for the upcoming season. CBS Sports' Chip Patterson did the same with regard to Alabama in 2025: Patterson believes the Crimson Tide will win the SEC championship on December 6 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. In CBS' annual "SEC expert picks," Patterson said: "Big bodies still matter in college football, and Alabama has plenty of them -- experienced, well-developed linemen forged in one of the country's premier NFL-talent incubators. Kalen DeBoer arrived relatively late in the cycle and inherited a significant roster exodus after Nick Saban's departure. Now, with a full year to settle in, the return of offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, and a roster reshaped in his image, 2025 should be the first fair look at the DeBoer era. For a coach who has won at every level, it was never a matter of if but when he'd have Alabama competing for championships. The pieces are in place for that to happen this fall." After SEC media days wrapped up in July, the Texas Longhorns were named the runaway favorite to win the conference champion with 96 first-place votes. Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs received the second-most first-place votes (44) by media members, while Alabama placed a distant third with 29 first-place votes. Patterson explained why he likes Alabama's chances to win the SEC this year. In short, it's the defense. "Alabama will have a top-five scoring defense nationally. The Crimson Tide have a pretty high floor when it comes to this category, annually ranking inside the top-20 and usually inside the top-15, but it's been a while since we looked to Tuscaloosa to find one of the country's truly dominant units. Alabama is old, big and experienced up front, and after the secondary had to grow up a bit, that side of the ball is looking like a real strength in 2025." It's been a while since Alabama went back-to-back years without an SEC championship. Since Nick Saban's first conference title at Alabama in 2009, the Crimson Tide have gone more than one year in between SEC crowns just once: in 2010 and '11. In 2011, Alabama played for the national championship anyway and mauled LSU in a 21-0 shutout. The Tide may not be the preseason favorite on everyone's ballots, but no one should be dismissing their chances outright. Alabama football schedule 2025 Alabama's season opener against Florida State at Doak Campbell is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on Aug. 30. The game will be televised on ABC. Key Alabama football starter injured. Kalen DeBoer provides latest update on lead tailback

This story has been updated to include new information. With less than two weeks until the season opener at Florida State on Aug. 30, Alabama football will be without a key starter for an indefinite amount of time. Early Sunday, coach Kalen DeBoer confirmed a report from Will Miller of Sports Illustrated that starting tailback Jam Miller had sustained an upper-body injury during the second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday. "Jam Miller suffered an upper-body injury in Saturday's scrimmage and went in for a procedure on Saturday evening," DeBoer said in a press release. "Jam should recover fully with a timetable for his return yet to be determined." Sports Illustrated's Miller reported late Saturday that the Crimson Tide running back was expected to miss multiple games, including the season opener at Florida State (2:30 p.m. CT, ABC). Citing Alabama sources, ESPN's Mark Schlabach also reported Sunday that Miller was expected to miss the Week 1 matchup in Tallahassee. Miller is Alabama's most experienced running back and was its leading rusher out of the backfield a season ago. The senior from Tyler, Texas, ran for 668 yards and seven touchdowns on 145 carries in 2024. In three years at Alabama, he's rushed for 1,092 yards on 219 carries. Miller had two touchdown runs in Alabama's 34-0 win over Missouri on Oct. 26, and a season-high 140 yards on 15 carries in the Week 2 win over South Florida on Sept. 7. His conference-high in yardage -- 84 yards, 28 carries -- came in Alabama's 28-14 win over Auburn, its fifth straight in the series. Miller also caught 16 passes for 155 yards last season, including a 16-yard catch and run in the first quarter of Alabama's 41-34 victory over Georgia on Sept. 28. With Miller sidelined, Alabama can look to sophomore Richard Young, a former four-star recruit from Florida who's been with the program since 2023. Young had 27 carries for 146 yards (5.4 AVG) and two touchdowns a season ago. The Crimson Tide also have sophomore Daniel Hill, who saw action in six games and went for 61 yards on 21 carries in 2024. Louisiana transfer Dre Washington is another option. He rushed for 1,343 yards over three seasons in Lafayette. Follow us at @RollTideWire on X, and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Alabama Crimson Tide news, notes and opinions.
