Sarawak records new rabies case involving cat in Matang
KUCHING (June 22): Sarawak recorded yet another new rabies case involving a cat, ending a two-week period with no new infections, said Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
Speaking during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk', he said the latest case occurred at Mile 13, Matang here.
'This new case once again reminds us that rabies does not only affect dogs but also cats.
'It is possible that cats that roam around in the community get infected through the saliva of the rabid dogs,' he explained.
In light of this, Wee appealed to pet owners to keep their dogs and cats within the compound of their residences.
He emphasised that pets should not be allowed to roam freely outside.
The Mayor also revealed that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) is currently being finalised by the relevant authorities to the expand mass rabies vaccination efforts to include cats.
Wee advised the public not to wait for free government vaccinations, encouraging pet owners to vaccinate their animals whenever necessary.
Meanwhile, Wee expressed delight that the Sarawak Traffic Games was held at the Kenyalang Traffic Garden yesterday to raise road safety awareness among the younger generation.
He noted that such competition had not been held at the venue for over a decade.
'This competition will be organised next year to involve as many primary schools as possible. It should be an inter-school event.'
Wee stressed that promoting road safety among young children is essential so they grow up to practise and uphold courtesy, which contributes to reducing road accidents. cat lead rabies Shall WEE Talk wee hong seng

#NSTviral: Patient turns handyman to fix fan in hospital [WATCH]
KUALA LUMPUR: A video showing a hospital patient in Thailand climbing a ladder to fix a fan himself has surprised netizens across Southeast Asia. Originally posted by TikTok user @ppari139, the clip has garnered over 1.5 million views and has been widely shared across social media platforms. However, many in Malaysia initially believed the incident occurred in a local hospital under the Health Ministry due to the similarity in the interiors of hospitals in both countries. On Malaysian social media, some netizens joked that the patient should walk free of charge for performing a service for the hospital. "Ask the hospital, no need to charge anything for this patient, he's helping the hospital repair the fan," Facebook user Brandon Chia said. User Rex Francis Ansangan then joked that the patient would say, "I will send the invoice to the (hospital) office."

Sweltering heat at Indera Mahkota clinic as air-conditioner breaks down again
KUANTAN: Faulty air-conditioning units at the Indera Mahkota Health Clinic have left patients and staff enduring sweltering conditions since last month. Several stand fans have been deployed in the patient waiting area to provide some relief, especially during the current hot weather. Semambu assemblyman Chan Chun Kuang said malfunctioning air-conditioner compressors caused the issue, forcing the clinic to rely entirely on stand fans. "I visited the clinic to inspect the faulty air-conditioning system. I was informed that repair work is expected to be completed by mid-August. The clinic has also requested that the repairs be expedited to minimise inconvenience to patients. For now, the public is encouraged to make appointments through MySejahtera to avoid long waiting times," he said in a Facebook post. Chan also suggested patients bring handheld fans to help cope with the heat while waiting for repairs. This is not the first time the clinic has faced such problems, after the centralised air-conditioning system experienced similar issues in June 2023. At that time, Chan contributed four industrial fans to improve comfort for staff and patients. New Straits Times has reached out to Pahang Health Committee chairman Datuk Razali Kassim on long-term measures to resolve the issue.
