Cardinals blank Padres 3-0; benches clear after Contreras hit by pitch
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Masyn Winn drove in two runs, Willson Contreras had two hits and scored twice and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Friday night.
Miles Mikolas (6-7) pitched into the sixth inning, allowing seven hits but no runs to pick up just his second win since May 23. Ryan Helsley pitched the ninth for his 21st save.
Padres starter Nick Pivetta (10-3) sustained his first loss since May 11. The 32-year-old, who in his first year in San Diego and having a career year, gave up three runs on three hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The Padres had 11 hits and stranded nine in their fourth consecutive loss.
The Cardinals scored a run in the second without a hit. Contreras was hit by a fastball and barked at Pivetta as he went to first with catcher Elias Diaz walking between them.
Both benches and bullpens rushed onto the field but it quickly fizzled and the teams were given warnings.
Nolan Arenado reached on an error by Jake Cronenworth, a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, and Yohel Pozo hit a grounder to shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who lost his balance and had to throw to first, allowing Contreras to score.

In the fourth inning with two on and no outs, San Diego's Gavin Sheets hit a fly to deep right. Jackson Merrill tagged and went to third. Bogaerts tried to go to second but Jordan Walker threw to the cutoff man and Bogaerts was easily out for a double play. Mikolas then struck out Cronenworth to escape the jam. Key stat

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Perhaps nobody was happier the Yankees won Wednesday night than catcher Austin Wells, after his embarrassing mental lapse on the bases cost New York an opportunity in the ninth inning. 'I think I just was being an idiot," he said. Anthony Volpe hit a tying homer off Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks with one out in the ninth, then Wells singled and advanced to second base when Trent Grisham tried to bunt for a hit. Grisham was thrown out at first for the second out and credited with a sacrifice. Wells, however, thought the inning was over and wandered off the bag. He got tagged in a rundown for the third out, sending a back-and-forth game to extra innings as fans in the Yankee Stadium crowd of 45,355 groaned. 'He thought there were three outs," New York manager Aaron Boone said. "Obviously, can't happen. With the base coaches we say the right thing. We go through with the pitcher, their time to the plate and number (of) outs. What do you say? Can't happen.' Instead of having seven-time All-Star and 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt at bat with the potential winning run on second base, the Yankees were resigned to keep slugging it out with Tampa Bay in extra innings. You give away an out like that in a big spot, so that's disappointing — and definitely no good thoughts going on there.' Fortunately for Wells, his teammates bailed him out. The Yankees remained four games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East. 'I mean, everyone did such a great job tonight," Wells said. "Started in the beginning with (rookie pitcher Will Warren). Gave us a great position to come back in that game. And I mean, all the huge hits that happened and then all the huge innings that the relievers threw. What a game. Sam Acho to join Cardinals' preseason TV broadcasts as analyst
The Cardinals bring back a former player to help call preseason games. The Arizona Cardinals have announced another addition to their broadcast team, although it is only for the preseason. They announced Wednesday that Sam Acho would be the analyst for the TV broadcast of the team's three preseason games. This comes on the heels of the announcement that former Cardinals offensive lineman A.Q. Shipley would be the team's new radio analyst for game broadcasts. Ron Wolfley was previously the radio analyst and, for preseason games, the analyst for the team's television broadcasts, but he stepped down after 20 years, wishing to have more time with his family on weekends. Acho was a fourth-round pick of the Cardinals out of Texas in 2011 and played nine years in the league, the first four with the Cardinals. He is also an ESPN analyst, focusing mostly on college football. The Cardinals will broadcast all three of their preseason games on television on CBS-5. Dave Pasch, the team's radio play-by-play announcer, will call play-by-play for the first two preseason games on television with Acho. Dani Sureck will be the sideline reporter for the TV broadcasts. Pasch, who also is a college football announcer for ESPN, will not be available for the Aug. 23 preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders, so Paul Calvisi, normally the sideline reporter for the radio broadcast team, will call play-by-play with Acho as the analyst. While Pasch is working the TV broadcast, Calvisi will call play-by-play on the radio for the first two preseason games with Shipley. Red Sox acquire Steven Matz as Cardinals' deadline sell-off continues: Source
The Red Sox have acquired left-hander Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals, a league source told The Athletic. Matz, 34, emerged as a valuable asset in the Cardinals' bullpen after spending the past three seasons as an oft-injured starting pitcher. St. Louis used him predominantly as a multi-inning set-up man, but Matz is stretched out enough to be used in a swingman role if needed. Advertisement Entering Wednesday, in 32 appearances (two starts) for the Cardinals, Matz has gone 5-2 with a 3.44 ERA. He's dominated left-handed hitters, with lefties averaging just .179 against him this year. Should Boston wish to use Matz in a hybrid role, it shouldn't take too long to stretch him out. Over half of his relief appearances this year spanned multiple innings, and he threw 39 pitches in one outing on July 13. Matz is in the final year of a four-year, $44 million deal he signed before the 2022 season. He has approximately $4.1 million remaining on his salary and will be a free agent.
