STB hosts workshop to drive sustainable tourism forward
KOTA KINABALU (June 9): In a significant step toward advancing responsible and environmentally conscious travel practices, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) High-Level Workshop was held on June 3 at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu.
The full-day workshop brought together 80 key tourism stakeholders — consisting of tourism associations, government departments and agencies, and academicians.
Organised by the Sabah Tourism Board, the workshop featured distinguished speakers from GSTC: Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC, and Kingston Khoo, a certified GSTC trainer. Both experts led insightful sessions that introduced participants to the GSTC criteria and provided guidance on sustainable tourism implementation.
The workshop was officially opened by Datuk Josie Lai, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Environment, who emphasised Sabah's responsibility as a steward of its natural and cultural treasures:
'Sustainable tourism is not just a goal; it is a necessity to safeguard Sabah's environment and culture for future generations while supporting economic growth and community well-being,' she said.
Following her keynote address, Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO of Sabah Tourism Board, delivered a briefing on the importance of GSTC in guiding Sabah's sustainable tourism efforts. He mentioned that the objective for implementing the GSTC criteria is to align Sabah's tourism sector with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by integrating these global standards. This approach enhances Sabah's international credibility, fosters sustainable business opportunities, and strengthens its position as a premier ecotourism destination on the world stage.
Sabah is already making significant progress, with three key sites — Maliau Basin, Imbak Canyon, and the Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley — having achieved GSTC certification, demonstrating local commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism best practices.
The workshop provided an in-depth overview of sustainable tourism principles, current global trends, and the pivotal role of the GSTC and its international standards in guiding both public and private sector practices. The morning sessions highlighted successful case studies from abroad, providing helpful information regarding real-world implementation of sustainability in tourism.
A highlight of the day was a sharing session by Grace Pounsin from Yayasan Sabah Group, who detailed their successful journey in achieving GSTC certification for the Maliau Basin and Imbak Canyon Conservation Areas — powerful examples of Sabah's leadership in conservation and sustainability.
The afternoon sessions focused on local context, emphasising the role of various stakeholders in applying GSTC standards in Sabah. Interactive discussions encouraged participants to explore practical and collaborative approaches to enhancing sustainability across the tourism value chain.
In his closing remarks, Julinus encouraged all participants to turn knowledge into action: 'We now have a clearer understanding of how sustainable tourism can drive real change for our communities and ecosystems. Let us take the GSTC standards and make them part of how we plan, operate and innovate in Sabah's tourism sector. Together, we can ensure that tourism development benefits both people and the planet.'
As Sabah eyes a sustainable future, this workshop marks a critical milestone in embedding sustainability into its tourism strategy.

Trudeau to speak at Sarawak sustainability, energy forum next month
KUCHING: Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be among the prominent speakers at the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF) to be held here next month. Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) said other speakers will include Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, former executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme Erik Solheim, and president of the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance Ashok Khosla. "They will share insights on climate action, inclusive growth, clean energy transitions, as well as global cooperation to tackle environmental and socioeconomic challenges," SEB, the forum organiser, said in a statement today. Co-hosted with the state Utility and Telecommunication Ministry and the state Energy and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, the forum will be launched by the Sarawak premier on Sept 3, while Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will close it on Sept 4, both at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). SEB said the forum aligns with Sarawak's broader sustainability objectives and energy transition priorities. "The forum gathers regional and international industry experts and thought leaders to exchange insights, share best practices, and explore opportunities for collaboration towards a lower-carbon future," it said. Themed "Partnerships for Our Goals – Sustainable Growth and Prosperity for the Region", the forum highlights the urgent need for collaboration in achieving shared climate and development targets through renewable energy and regional integration. "It supports progress aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and Sarawak's Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). SEB said that since its launch in 2019 as a five-part, 10-year thought leadership initiative, SAREF has evolved into a leading regional platform for knowledge exchange, policy dialogue, and strategic engagement on sustainable energy development. It said that past editions have catalysed partnerships across Asean, informed policy dialogues on hydropower and grid integration, and advanced conversations on energy equity and resilience.

High-level committee set up to oversee cross-ministry rural development
KUALA LUMPUR: A high-level committee (HLC) on rural development has been set up to coordinate efforts across ministries to address rural-urban development challenges, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister, who chaired the inaugural HLC meeting in Parliament, said the committee will be the apex strategic platform to align rural development policies and programmes. 'The current development of rural areas is facing increasingly complex challenges from overlapping functions between ministries and agencies to resource constraints and siloed implementation,' Zahid said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 14) The HLC, which will convene at least twice a year, is supported by six working committees focusing on key areas: education, entrepreneurship, rural economy, digitalisation, rural tourism, and infrastructure. Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the initiative is in line with the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which emphasises integrated governance to reduce duplication, optimise resources, and speed up outcomes. He also cited a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report that stated that no Asean country is on track to fully achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to rural development by 2030 without better coordination in infrastructure, workforce, human capital, and poverty reduction efforts. "Key areas discussed during the HLC meeting included improving access to rural schools, enhancing rural tourism promotion, strengthening support for senior citizens and special needs groups, and upgrading rural healthcare infrastructure," he said. Several cross-ministry initiatives are already in motion, including the UP_TVET, a centralised application system for vocational and technical training and Inap Desa 2026, aimed at positioning homestays as key attractions during Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Zahid said the government intended to curb rural-urban migration by creating more opportunities in rural areas, nurturing rural tech entrepreneurs, and enhancing the competitiveness of the rural tourism sector. 'Rural development is not just about building physical infrastructure. It's about building the future and unlocking the potential of our people,' he said. 'With a whole-of-government approach, I am confident this HLC will help create a thriving, sustainable rural ecosystem that contributes significantly to national progress,' he added.

Mayor Walk returns this year to promote health, community spirit

The event, which is expected to attract 10,000 participants, will kick off at 6am at the MBKS Boulevard here. All registered participants will stand a chance to win exciting lucky draw prizes. At a press conference yesterday, Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative, first introduced in 2017, is part of the council's Youth, Culture, and Sports programme. It reflects the Kuching South City Council's (MBKS) mission to foster healthy lifestyles, encourage public participation, and strengthen community bonds. 'Mayor Walk brings together people of all ages, from young children to senior citizens, encouraging families and friends to walk side by side in a spirit of togetherness. 'It reinforces Kuching South's identity as a caring, safe, and inclusive city,' said Wee. The event also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). These goals guide MBKS in creating impactful and sustainable programmes that promote balance, awareness, and a connection with nature. Wee acknowledged the crucial role of sponsors in making the event a large-scale annual success.
