Kuldeep Yadav Banks On Spin To Win In England, Says 'Wickets Look Promising'
Kuldeep Yadav is optimistic about the Test series in England, saying that the wickets spinners will have their say as the game progresses.
With one half of India's seasoned spin duo no longer part of the Test team, Kuldeep Yadav has been spending more time with Ravindra Jadeja during the England tour. The initial pitch assessments have bolstered his confidence ahead of the series starting on 1 June.
The retirement of R Ashwin has increased Jadeja's responsibility, who has played 12 Tests in England. Kuldeep, the only specialist spinner in the squad, has bowled just nine overs in his lone Test appearance in England.
Experts believe Kuldeep will play a pivotal role as India aim for their first series win in England since 2007.
While he may not feature in the series opener at Lord's, spinners are expected to be more effective at venues like Birmingham, The Oval, and potentially even Old Trafford.
'The wickets look promising for spinners. The pitch was good for batting during the intra-squad game. There was some moisture on the first day, aiding seamers, but spinners became more involved as the game progressed," Kuldeep mentioned during the intra-squad game.
The wrist-spinner is hopeful of getting assistance from the surfaces over the five matches.
'There's bounce for spinners on this surface. Today is day three, and I am yet to bowl. The ball is turning a bit, and I hope it stays that way during the series," said Kuldeep.
While the Kanpur cricketer misses Ashwin in the dressing room, his retirement has allowed Kuldeep to spend more time with Jadeja.
'Playing alongside Jaddu bhai is an honour. Both Jaddu and Ash have been brilliant for India. When I made my debut, they helped me a lot.
'Now, I regularly discuss with Jaddu bhai how to bowl to specific batters. We spend a lot of time together both on and off the field, which helps me tactically. We've discussed field placements, and he has given me valuable insights."
India are currently playing India A in a four-day game. When asked about the main objectives from the sole practice game before the Test series, Kuldeep said, 'Volume is crucial for a bowler. We've been playing a lot of T20 cricket in the last four or five months.
'Fast bowlers are told to bowl at least 15-20 overs for Test match preparation. It's the same for spinners; the more they bowl, the better.
'I'm excited about playing in overseas conditions. Mindset becomes important here. I've always had an attacking mindset. If there's some help for spinners and the sun is shining, we can make an impact. I don't worry too much about the conditions," he added.
Kuldeep is also impressed with new captain Shubman Gill's approach.
'Shubman knows how to lead. He has worked with many captains, especially Rohit bhai, and has learned from them. From what I've seen so far, he is very motivated and focused on boosting the team's morale. He is ready for the job," he concluded.

Prasidh Krishna On What Made Joe Root Angry: 'I Just Said, You Are Looking...'
Last Updated: Prasidh Krishna has revealed what he told Joe Root that led to their fiery on-field spat. Indian fast-bowler Prasidh Krishna has revealed he told England's Joe Root that he was 'looking in great shape' during the fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which led to 'a lot of abuse' and an ugly on-field spat between the two. Prasidh was slammed on social media for riling up someone with as clean an image as Root, but according to the Karnataka man, even he didn't expect 'such a big reaction'. The incident happened soon after Root came to the crease in the second innings of the Test. His face turned red after the conversation, and he hit a few boundaries against Prasidh, who responded with a couple of bouncers in anger. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena didn't take long to involve himself in it, following Prasidh like a hawk from thereon. He was heard having chats with KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill, who didn't seem pleased with being asked to control the verbal attacks. 'I don't know why Rooty [reacted]," Prasidh told the BBC's Test Match Special. 'I just said, 'You're looking in great shape,' and then it turned into a lot of abuse and all of that. Later, at the press conference, Prasidh was asked if the plan was to distract the Englishman. 'That was the plan, but I didn't expect the couple of words I said to get such a big reaction from him," Prasidh said. Prasidh also conceded that Root was a legend of the game. 'That's just who I am when I'm bowling, when I'm enjoying. If it means that I have a bit of a chatter with the batter… and it does help me when I can get under the nerves of the batsman and get a reaction from them. But I love the guy that he is. He is a legend of the game and I think it is great when two people are out there wanting to do the best and be a winner at a given moment," he added. Eventually, Root got out LBW to Mohammed Siraj. England folded for 247, only 23 runs ahead of the visitors, and the third essay yielded 75/2 led by Yashasvi Jaiswal's fifty before Stumps.
