Calcutta High Court upholds artistes' right to work in Tollywood

Time of India19-05-2025
In a significant ruling, Justice
Amrita Sinha
of the
Calcutta High Court
on Monday issued a stern directive stating that no one can obstruct artistes from working in the Tollywood film industry. This comes after actors like
Parambrata Chattopadhyay
and
Anirban Bhattacharya
alleged that they were being prevented from working. The conflict between film directors and the Federation of Cine Technicians & Workers of Eastern India has long plagued Tollywood, often resulting in production halts. The matter escalated to the point of judicial intervention. During the hearing, Justice Sinha said, 'No one can interfere with someone's livelihood. If issues arise, local police must be approached. The state cannot remain a mute spectator.' Advocate Abhratosh Majumdar informed the court that despite previous directives, obstruction continues, with shooting being halted and artists sidelined. The court was urged to issue a ruling restraining the Federation from interfering in work-related matters, highlighting deep-rooted issues within the film industry.

Abirami Bhattar, the poet who praised Goddess Sakthi in his Abirami Andadi, describes Her appearance, said M.A. Manickavelu in a discourse. He says the Goddess wears bangles, which are made of conches. These bangles are studded with multi-coloured beads. She is the embodiment of auspiciousness. All the arts were created by Her. There are said to be 64 arts. She is the Mother of all of them. Her speech is an example of how fine, pleasant, meaningful speech itself is an art. She is like a divine peacock. This peacock is the fountainhead of all the fine arts. Bhattar describes Her as sakalakalaamayil (Abirami, the peacock, who is the repository of all arts). The fine arts are Her feathers. She takes up one half of Lord Siva's body. Abirami Bhattar recalls the descent of the river Ganga to the earth. The river came with full force, with the idea that no one was capable of bearing the impact of her arrival on earth. But Lord Siva trapped her in His locks, thereby saving the earth from the impact. Siva's act of trapping the mighty river also helped curb the pride of Ganga. There was a Tamil poet called Kalamega Pulavar. He was asked to compose a verse with a line in it that spoke of the river Ganga being held in a pot (kutam). Kalamegha Pulavar came up with a verse, which said the river Ganga could not be deterred by the sky, or by hills, or by the earth. But she was caught by Siva in His matted locks. The poet cleverly incorporated the line he was asked to include in the verse. His poem went: sataamakutathile gangai adangum, meaning the Ganga was caught at the top of Siva's sataamakuta (sataa — matted locks; makuta — top of). Remove the letters 'sa-taa-ma.' You are left with kutathile gangai adangum, which means the river Ganga can be contained in a pot.

War 2 advance booking: Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR's film eyes over ₹4 crore opening on first day, check details

War 2 First Day Advance Booking Report: Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR's upcoming action-packed movie War 2 is going to release on 14 August and its advance booking opened on Sunday. So far, the film has minted more than ₹ 4 crore already in advance booking. According to by 10.30 pm Sunday, the advance booking figure has crossed ₹ 4.24 crore. The figures are for about 9000 shows in Hindi (2D, IMAX, DOLBY, 4DX and other formats), 100 for Tamil and 115 for Telugu. The Telugu shows are less than expected, considering the film also stars a popular Telugu actor, Jr NTR, added the trade tracker. Sacnilk said the Hindi version of War 2 is will release on 5000 screens in India, which features a runtime of 2 hours 53 minutes. The international advance booking also opened for War 2 last week, however, the response was not so warm. Trade sources say YRF is releasing the Hindi version in 900 US screens for paid previews. Till Sunday, about 1,600 tickets had been sold, leaving many auditoriums almost empty. Although the movie will see a limited release in the Southern belt — Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Pondicherry- the film will be available in 2 other languages besides Hindi — Telugu and Tamil. Made on a budget of 400 crores, according to Bollywood Hungama, the costliest Spy film in India is expected to emerge as one of the biggest openers of the year. Though the numbers appear promising, War 2 is going to clash with Rajinikanth's Coolie, which releases on the same day. On Sunday, YRF declared advanced booking open on Sunday with special video. The caption on Instagram read, 'Are you ready to witness the CARNAGE in cinemas from August 14th? BOOK TICKETS NOW for #War2 and let us give you an experience to cherish for the rest of your lives 🔥🔥 Releasing in Hindi, Telugu & Tamil in theatres worldwide.'

Shakespeare's plays have played major role in expanding Kannada consciousness: MVU VC

Dharwad: Vice-chancellor of Maharshi Valmiki University Shivanand Kelaginamani said translations of English works played a significant role in shaping Kannada literature in the pre-Navodaya period and Shakespeare's plays brought a new wave of excitement to Kannada literature and theatre. Inaugurating a lecture series on Shakespeare's plays, organised by Dharwad Katte in association with CVG Publications, Bengaluru, and Maharshi Valmiki University held at Bendre Bhavan in Dharwad he said their themes, sensibilities, language, and style expanded the creative possibilities of Kannada literature. Kannadigas, he said, welcomed Shakespeare's plays. Through adaptations, the Kannada language tried to make Shakespeare's works its own, he added. "Shakespeare is not a writer beyond question. Many philosophical crises are evident in his works," Kelaginamani remarked. "He was a problematic author. Both his life and writings carried complexities. Shakespeare spoke openly about the world but never uttered a word about himself. The central theme of his plays was exploration. He tried to understand the inner depths of the world. Hamlet was a meditative, contemplative mind and such a mind would never resort to murder," said writer RG Hegde. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mix 3 Kitchen Ingredients, Wake Up Thinner Every Morning Get Fit Today Click Here Undo Venkatagiri Dalawai opined that the problem with Kannada's engagement with Shakespeare lies in knowing him only through English. "Shakespeare must be accessed in Kannada itself, so that Kannadigas can truly own him. He had many disagreements with Christianity and Christians. His plays were not author-centric, they were centred on the work itself," he said. Prof Basavaraj Donur observed that Shakespeare's plays offer solutions to numerous philosophical, social, religious, moral, political, literary, and cultural crises in India. "The contemporary relevance of his plays is astonishing. Shakespeare was a rare genius that the world has seen. No other author has spoken about human nature, divinity, and nature the way he has. The British revere Shakespeare above all, he is their identity, their past, present, and future," he said. Vijaykumar Katagihallimath and Danayya Mahantayya Hiremath also spoke on the occasion.
