Dalit youths allege illegal detention and custodial torture by cops in MP
The victims, residents of the Kanjadpur Dharampura area, stated they were returning from a housewarming ceremony on July 15 when they stopped to urinate by the roadside. A Dial-100 police vehicle allegedly picked them up without explanation. One youth, who is disabled, was released, while the remaining four were taken to the police station, hung upside down, beaten with belts, and tortured.
Police had previously claimed to have arrested five individuals for stealing transformer oil.
The incident prompted protests by Bhim Army workers and the victims' families, who marched to the SP office demanding action under the SC/ST Act and the suspension of the accused policemen. A sit-in was held outside the SP office, where authorities responded by locking the gates and cutting power to the premises.
DIG Lalit Shakyawar later visited the site and assured that a medical examination would be conducted and action taken after investigation.
Three of the victims have since undergone medical tests.
"We have asked a senior officer to investigate the matter. CCTV footage from inside the police station is being examined," said Chhatarpur SP Agam Jain.
Families also alleged that one of the five detained youths is missing and feared he may have died in custody. A victim's father-in-law further accused the police of threatening him with arrest and eviction from govt land if the protest continued.
Former Congress MLA Neeraj Dixit also visited the protest site and demanded justice. A heavy police force from multiple stations was deployed. Investigations are currently underway.

SP MPs urge Centre to intervene in closure, merger of schools in UP
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party MPs on Wednesday raised the issue of closure of 26,012 primary schools and merger of another 5,000 schools by UP govt in Parliament and sought Centre's intervention to protect the right to education of the poor. The party also announced that it will adopt the route of an agitation to oppose this move of the state govt. SP MP from Azamgarh Dharmendra Yadav said right to education was introduced by the Centre hence the Union govt cannot shy away from its responsibility of ensuring the poor are not deprived of this right. He said by closing and merging thousands of primary schools the state govt will deprive the poor of the opportunity to send their children to schools. "In Uttar Pradesh, 26012 primary schools have been closed, 5000 of them have been merged, and appointments of over 2 lakh teachers have been stalled. Children from poor families and those from the PDA community are being deprived of the right to education. At the same time more than 27000 liquor stores are opened. This needs to be addressed," Dharmendra said. Apart from Dharmendra Yadav, other SP MPs including Anand Bhadauria, Naresh Uttam Patel, Lalji Verma, Neeraj Maurya and Priya Saroj also raised the issue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo The MPs pointed out that the Union govt also contributes towards the budget for education in every state hence the Centre cannot keep mum on the issue and must intervene. They said UP govt was not abiding by the law on right to education passed by the Centre. Children from the poor sections of the society including the Dalit, tribals and those from the backward classes were being denied their right to education. People of the state will not accept this, they said.

Brahmin politics simmers in UP as parties vie for their support
Lucknow: Amid the PDA poll narrative of the opposition, it is Brahmin politics that has started simmering in Uttar Pradesh. The situation came to the fore days after senior SP functionary and leader of opposition in UP assembly, Mata Prasad Pandey, accused the BJP of "insulting the Brahmin community". Now, the focus is on BJP's next move to counter the charge. Pandey, a Brahmin, ratcheted up the recent incident in which UP minister of state for women and child welfare, Pratibha Shukla, staged a dharna on July 24-25 at Akbarpur police station, accusing cops of targeting her aides. Her husband and former MP, Anil Shukla Warsi, who was present at the dharna, claimed that Brahmins were being unfairly targeted. He even called up deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, urging him to intervene in the case and protect the "interests of Brahmins". The SP functionary's accusation that the BJP has insulted Brahmins is seen as an attempt to breach BJP's upper-caste vote bank, especially Brahmins. BJP sources said the party may seek to neutralise the opposition charge by hefting a Brahmin face at a prominent position within the organisation in UP or the Centre in a bid to consolidate its position among the upper caste, which has been traditionally supportive of the saffron outfit since the peak of the Ram temple movement in the early 1990s. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo This, experts said, may help the BJP send a reassuring message to the community besides undercutting the SP's narrative that the BJP was getting overly focused on non-dominant OBCs at the cost of Brahmin representation. SP ally Congress too has been seeking to firm up its presence among the Brahmins since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when it appointed senior party leader Avinash Pandey as in charge of UP. BJP has been elevating Brahmins at prominent positions. The foremost example was the appointment of Brajesh Pathak as deputy CM in the UP cabinet. Pathak replaced Dinesh Sharma, who held the position during the first tenure of chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Sharma is now a Rajya Sabha MP and one of the contenders for the post of UP BJP chief. Another Brahmin face who is eyeing the top organisational job is former Basti MP and current party in charge for Assam, Harish Dwivedi. In the UP BJP organisational structure, two vice-presidents — Vijay Bahadur Pathak and Triyambak Tripathi — and one general secretary — Govind Narayan Shukla — are Brahmins. A BJP functionary said the party certainly looked to consolidate its support among the Brahmins. Experts underscored how the social engineering comprising Brahmins swung the political fortunes of BSP chief Mayawati, who got an absolute majority for the first time in 2007. The community is also said to have supported SP in 2012 before shifting back to BJP in 2017.
