Congress to Hold Divisional-Level Protest in Raichur on May 7 Against Soaring Prices
Raichur: The Congress party will hold a divisional-level protest rally in Raichur on May 7 to highlight the sustained rise in prices of essential commodities under the BJP-led central government. The protest, to be held at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium, is aimed at sending a strong message to the BJP, said Karnataka Minister for Minor Irrigation and Science & Technology N.S. Boseraju on Sunday.
Addressing a preparatory meeting with party leaders from the municipal limits at his office, Boseraju said the BJP had misled the public with false promises and emotional rhetoric to come to power at the Centre. "Since the Narendra Modi government assumed office, there has been a consistent and unjustifiable hike in the prices of petrol, diesel, cooking gas, and other daily essentials. The burden of high GST rates has only added to the suffering of ordinary citizens," he said.
The minister appealed to Congress workers and the general public to participate in large numbers and ensure the success of the protest. 'This is not just a rally. It's a collective voice against the economic distress caused by the Centre's policies,' he added.
Boseraju accused the BJP of engaging in divisive politics, claiming the party approaches the people only during elections and seeks to polarise society along caste and religious lines. 'We must counter such forces by raising awareness about the real issues affecting the people, especially price rise,' he said.
Referring to the Congress government's welfare schemes in Karnataka, Boseraju said, 'When our government came to power, the BJP dismissed our guarantee schemes as hollow promises. But we have fulfilled every commitment made in our manifesto — we have walked the talk.'
He added that the May 7 protest is also a warning to the BJP against continuing price hikes and politically motivated economic decisions.
Several senior Congress leaders were present during the preparatory meeting, including, Mayor Narasamma Narasingalu, Jayanna, K. Shantappa, Amaregouda Hanchinal, Ramanna Irabaghera, Rudrappa Angadi, Block Congress President Srinivas Reddy, Kurabadoddi Anjaneya, G. Shivamurthy, Nirmala Benne, Madagiri Narasimhulu, Hanumanth Jookur, Tejappa, Mariswami, and Manikantha.

Four NPP MLAs defect to PPA in Arunachal
Itanagar: Four legislators of National People's Party (NPP) have formally defected to People's Party of Arunachal (PPA), according to an official notification issued by the state legislative assembly on Monday. The switch was executed under Rule 4 of the Members of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Grounds of Defection) Rules, 1987 and has been notified in the Arunachal Pradesh Gazette. The MLAs who crossed over to PPA are Namgey Tsering (Tawang), Pesi Jilen (Liromoba), Tapi Darang (Pasighat East) and Oni Panyang (Mariyang-Geku). All four had submitted fresh Form-III declarations on May 12, 2025, notifying their change of party allegiance from the NPP to the PPA. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) holds three seats, while Congress and Independents have one and three seats, respectively. The development is seen as a boost to PPA, which shares ideological proximity with ruling BJP. Political observers believe the defection could further bolster the BJP-led coalition's strength in the assembly. BJP will have to give people their due ‘bhagidari': UP Cong in charge
LUCKNOW As the government on Monday issued a notification for conducting India's 16th census, the Uttar Pradesh Congress is gearing up for the 2027 Assembly polls with an 'inclusive organisational structure' made via Rahul Gandhi's 'social justice' formula. 'As the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi took up the demand for caste census and the BJP will have to give the benefits that communities deserve. They (BJP) will have to give communities, OBCs, minorities and SC/STs their due bhagidari (share),' said Avinash Pande, in charge of UP Congress, who is extensively conducting restructuring of the party in the state. 'The next election will not be fought with the BJP, but the entire machinery where the election commission too appears a frontal organisation for the ruling party,' alleged Pande who has directed that all committees formed in state should include women, dalits, OBCs and minorities. Currently, 79 OBC castes are listed as socially and educationally backward, enjoying quota benefits in government jobs and admissions in government educational institutes. 'Irrespective of the census' consequence, we have raised the issue for benefits in proportion to the population (jiski jitni hissedari utni uski bhagidari). In fact the organisational restructuring or Sangathan Srijan that we initiated in December is on the lines of inclusive participation. I have asked for ensuring social justice at all levels of organisational structure - right from state to district, block and booth,' said Pande. The Congress leader said the party gained strength between 2022 assembly polls, when its total vote share was 2.33% with two seats won and the Lok sabha elections, when six seats came to Congress with 9.46% vote share. 'In the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had an impact on at least 10 seats. Had we gone alone, our seats would have been more,' said Pande. When asked about alliance with Samajwadi Party, he said: 'First we will see the impact of organisational restructuring in the upcoming panchayat election 2026.' 'Our marketing may be weak, but our presence is strong in at least 53 or 54 Lok Sabha seats in UP. The first phase of organisational restructuring will get over and training of selected office-bearers will begin from August 15 to set the agenda for the panchayat elections in 2026. The BJP is misleading people with a 'capitalistic approach'. The gap between the rich and the poor is such that few rich make it to the world list and remaining majority population is so poor that has to be fed with free rations, said Pande. 'Modi might be PM of 140 crore people, but Rahul Gandhi is the leader of 140 crore people,' he said.
