Four NPP MLAs defect to PPA in Arunachal
Itanagar: Four legislators of National People's Party (NPP) have formally defected to People's Party of Arunachal (PPA), according to an official notification issued by the state legislative assembly on Monday.
The switch was executed under Rule 4 of the Members of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Grounds of Defection) Rules, 1987 and has been notified in the Arunachal Pradesh Gazette.
The MLAs who crossed over to PPA are Namgey Tsering (Tawang), Pesi Jilen (Liromoba), Tapi Darang (Pasighat East) and Oni Panyang (Mariyang-Geku). All four had submitted fresh Form-III declarations on May 12, 2025, notifying their change of party allegiance from the NPP to the PPA.
They were elected on NPP tickets in the 2024 assembly elections.
The notification regarding the change was issued by assembly speaker Tesam Pongte.
With the latest realignment, the PPA — Arunachal's only recognised regional party founded in 1977 — now has six members in the 60-member assembly. BJP continues to maintain its dominant position with 46 seats.
NPP, which emerged as the second largest party in the April 19 assembly polls last year, now has only one MLA — Longding-Pumao legislator Thangwang Wangham.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) holds three seats, while Congress and Independents have one and three seats, respectively.
The development is seen as a boost to PPA, which shares ideological proximity with ruling BJP. Political observers believe the defection could further bolster the BJP-led coalition's strength in the assembly.

Power hike will keep industry, investors away: Akhilesh
Lucknow: Samajwadi party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said there were reports that the BJP government was all set to hike the power tariff in the state and the move will further deter new industry and investments away from Uttar Pradesh. "The BJP government has failed to set up a single new power production other than those installed during the Samajwadi Party government. They have failed to add a single unit of power to the production capacity of the state. Poor upkeep has left the infrastructure in shambles. Transformers are developing snags and people are rendered without power for days despite the rising summer temperatures," Akhilesh said, slamming the BJP government for deliberately ignoring the power sector to facilitate its privatisation. "Now, there are reports that the government is planning to increase power tariff in rural as well as urban areas. This will only discourage new industry and investment from coming to UP. No new industry or investment will come to a state where cost of power is not cheaper (than other states)," Akhilesh said, talking to the media at party headquarters in Lucknow on Monday. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav slams Congress over Karnataka caste survey, calls it 'political cover-up'
New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Union Minister Bhupender Yadav on Monday accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of misusing public funds and attempting a 'political cover-up' through its re-enumeration of the 2015 caste survey. 'The reason India was considered a fragile economy in 2014 was due to the Congress party's misuse of taxpayers' money through corruption and broke their trust. They must answer how Rs 165 crore was spent when Congress itself is now questioning the accuracy of that data. Who will take responsibility for that expenditure? Either they were simply travelling, as they often do,' said Yadav. 'Congress is repeating its old patterns, and we demand accountability for Karnataka's costly exercise. Their re-survey is nothing more than a political cover-up,' said Yadav. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav also accused the Congress party, accusing it of consistently betraying the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and reducing social justice to a mere political slogan. 'The OBC community has always been betrayed by the Congress. If the Congress had genuine intent, it would have formed a new commission after scrapping the Kaka Kalelkar Commission... Instead, they dismissed the commission's report and continued to rule... Later, when the Mandal Commission was constituted and the Supreme Court upheld its legality, the Congress worked to weaken the OBC Commission,' 'Congress has never stood with the poor, OBCs, or SC/ST communities. This comes after Siddaramaiah earlier said that they accepted the suggestion made by top Congress leadership to re-enumerate the case census data. 'Discussions were held regarding the caste census as concerns were raised by some organisations, religious heads, and even a few ministers. The report submitted on the caste census has been accepted in principle. There is an agreement that a caste enumeration should be conducted. We have also agreed to this,' he said. (ANI)
