Power hike will keep industry, investors away: Akhilesh
Lucknow:
Samajwadi party
national president
Akhilesh Yadav
on Monday said there were reports that the BJP government was all set to hike the power tariff in the state and the move will further deter new industry and investments away from Uttar Pradesh.
"The BJP government has failed to set up a single new power production other than those installed during the Samajwadi Party government. They have failed to add a single unit of power to the production capacity of the state. Poor upkeep has left the infrastructure in shambles. Transformers are developing snags and people are rendered without power for days despite the rising summer temperatures," Akhilesh said, slamming the BJP government for deliberately ignoring the power sector to facilitate its privatisation.
"Now, there are reports that the government is planning to increase power tariff in rural as well as urban areas. This will only discourage new industry and investment from coming to UP. No new industry or investment will come to a state where cost of power is not cheaper (than other states)," Akhilesh said, talking to the media at party headquarters in Lucknow on Monday.
Responding to a media query over ban on fairs (Mela) in Bahraich, Ayodhya and Barabanki, Akhilesh said this was the result of BJP's divisive politics of hate.

"These melas were being held for thousands of years," the SP chief said, adding that such events offer an opportunity to boost local economy in a small but effective way as locals gather to celebrate, spend on buying confectionery and enjoy joyrides. Akhilesh said such melas also help people to bond with each other and strengthen the cultural diversity that characterises our country.
"People from different walks of life come together and meet each other at these events and perhaps that is what the BJP's divisive politics of hate does not approve of," Akhilesh said.
How many from PDA recruited in police drive, asks ex-CM
Lucknow: Accusing the BJP government of targeting the PDA community comprising Pichhde (backward classes), Dalits and Alpsankhyak (minorities) for joining forces with the Samajwadi Party, former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav dared the BJP government in UP to come out with the PDA headcount in the latest police recruitment. He said the PDA was being neglected and snubbed by the BJP in all the government schemes.
"Let the BJP declare the count of individuals from the PDA who have been recruited in the police department," he said. Akhilesh's statement comes a day after the state government gave away appointment letters to over 60,000 individuals who have cleared the police constable recruitment drive.

Lalu Yadav And The Ambedkar Photo Controversy: How BJP Turned The 'Dalit' Table In Bihar In 12 Months
Last Updated: A viral photo of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, appearing to disrespect a portrait of BR Ambedkar, has sparked outrage among Bihar's SC and ST communities In politics, a week is a long time, and a year feels like a lifetime. It is no wonder that after last May's Lok Sabha election results, when the BJP lost 28 seats in Uttar Pradesh and nine in Bihar, the party was uneasy. A year ago, it was grappling with how the slogan '400 paar' had been used against it by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, RJD, Samajwadi Party, and other opposition parties. They projected fears of reservation vanishing, which dearly cost the BJP. The SP called it a triumph of 'PDA' (pichda-dalit-adivasi) and the RJD claimed it as Dalits rejecting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). But things have changed in Bihar, where an assembly election is scheduled later this year. A viral photo op has significantly shifted the political landscape. On RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav's birthday, a follower gifted him with a portrait of BR Ambedkar, which he seemingly did not acknowledge. The video shows the former chief minister of Bihar stretching his legs while the portrait is placed on the chair, appearing disrespectful. Ambedkar is revered by many backward communities in Bihar, where Scheduled Castes (SC) make up 19.65 per cent and Scheduled Tribes (ST) constitute 1.68 per cent of the population, as per a 2022 caste-based survey. This incident has angered over 20 per cent of Bihar's population, presenting an opportunity for the BJP just ahead of the elections. भारत को संविधान देने वाले बाबा साहेब डॉ. भीमराव अंबेडकर जी के अपमान से मन अत्यंत दुखित है।लालू यादव और राजद को न तो बिहार माफ करेगा और न ही देश!- माननीय केन्द्रीय कृषि मंत्री श्री @ChouhanShivraj #BabasahebAmbedkar #DalitVirodhiRJD — BJP Bihar (@BJP4Bihar) June 16, 2025 The BJP deployed its top leaders to capitalise on the incident, including former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who carefully criticised Lalu Prasad without hurting Bihari pride. He stressed on the disrespect shown to Ambedkar, stating: 'I have one lament. What has happened to you, Lalu Yadav ji? All these talks of backwards were just for pretense? The man who gave us the Constitution, who gave us reservation, you are disrespecting that person — Dr BR Ambedkar! My mind is troubled. I am hurt. The disrespect shown to his photo exposes the real intent of Lalu Yadav and the RJD. The elephant has one set of teeth for eating and another just to show. Neither Bihar nor India will forgive Lalu ji or RJD ever." ये 'चित्र' नहीं, आरजेडी का 'चरित्र' है। #ShameOnLaluFamily #DalitVirodhiRJD #BabasahebAmbedkar — BJP Bihar (@BJP4Bihar) June 15, 2025 The Bihar BJP has been vigorously promoting this photo through social media, using hashtags like 'Dalit Virodhi RJD'. On Monday, it tweeted that five days had gone by without an apology from Lalu Yadav, attributing this to his 'pride". Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who is from the Dalit community, also criticised Lalu Prasad, saying: 'One came with a photo of Bhimrao Ambedkar and he wanted to gift him (Lalu Prasad). The body language of Lalu ji indicates a pride, which was reflected even in the way he was sitting. Now that this matter has become so big and you have disrespected Babasaheb, but his pride stops him from apologising." Meghwal said disrespecting Ambedkar while claiming to support the unprivileged cannot go hand in hand. 'People of Bihar, in the coming days will teach Lalu ji a lesson," he added. Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav, who was in charge of the BJP's 2020 Bihar polls, demanded an apology. 'Bihar's citizen hasn't forgotten the tenure of Lalu ji. During Lalu ji's reign, the most amount of injustices were perpetrated against extremely backwards and Dalits…He is so submerged in his pride…that scene itself depicts his pride. That is why India's poor, extremely backwards, those who believe in social justice, know the way Lalu ji kept the photo near his leg…it hurt me too. I personally think he should apologise," he said. Five days later, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav dismissed the issue saying: 'This is not even an issue. No one has insulted anyone…" The Bihar SC commission, however, thinks otherwise. It has issued a notice to Lalu Yadav for allegedly insulting Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, giving him 15 days to respond. As the BJP goes all out in Bihar, it is remarkable to see how much can change in a year in Indian politics. An election slogan or a photo op can indeed be decisive.

‘Op Sindoor' popular theme of Durga Puja
Kolkata: Operation Sindoor -- the recent cross-border military strike by Indian armed forces on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupiedKashmir -- will be the central theme of this year's Durga Puja celebration at the popular Santosh Mitra Square in Kolkata. The puja is organised by BJP leader and local councillor Sajal Ghosh. Ghosh, councillor of Ward 50 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and chief organiser of the Santosh Mitra Square Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samiti, announced the theme through a post on social media. Like in previous years, the committee has once again refused to accept the annual financial grant given by the West Bengal government to community puja organisers. Santosh Mitra Square was among the first Durga Puja committees in the state to reject the state's monetary assistance, with Ghosh calling it a misuse of public funds at a time when the government struggles to meet essential civic expenses. Last year, several other puja committees also declined the grant, citing public outrage over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata and the alleged cover-up attempts by sections of the administration. In 2023, the puja's theme was the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had attended the celebrations that year. Santosh Mitra Square stands out as one of the few prominent Durga Pujas in West Bengal not controlled by the ruling Trinamool Congress. It is the only major puja in the state spearheaded by a BJP leader, and has matched TMC-led pujas in scale and public turnout.

Modi governance a turning point in devpt: Purandeswari
Rajamahendravaram: BJP state president and Rajahmundry MP Daggubati Purandeswari stated that the past 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance have significantly transformed India's development landscape, bringing the benefits of progress directly to the people. Speaking at a press conference at the BJP office here on Sunday, she said Modi, having personally experienced poverty, introduced numerous schemes focused on the welfare of the poor after assuming office in 2014. 'His tenure has seen a balanced emphasis on both development and welfare,' she noted, adding that the PM is moving ahead with an unwavering commitment to achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047. She said that before 2014, only 7 crore people had access to banking. Thanks to the Jan Dhan Yojana, over 55 crore people now benefit from banking services. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, safe drinking water has reached 15 crore people, and 12 crore toilets were built under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Purandeswari also spoke of key welfare schemes like the Ayushman Bharat health insurance programme, which has provided healthcare worth Rs 1.3 lakh crore to 9 crore citizens, and affordable medicines through Jan Aushadhi stores. Reports by IMF, UNDP, and World Bank have affirmed that 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty and poverty rates have dropped by 25%, she said. She praised digital governance, citing that 49 per cent of global digital payments now happen in India, with 95 crores smartphones in use nationwide. She credited direct benefit transfers (DBT) for curbing corruption and ensuring transparency. On Andhra Pradesh, she criticised the previous government's neglect of Amaravati but welcomed the current state government's renewed focus. She noted the Centre's Rs 15,000 crore funding through the World Bank and Rs 11,000 crore from HUDCO for Amaravati, in addition to Rs 20,000 crore for regional connectivity are making Amaravati a reality. She also spoke of Centre's continued support for the Polavaram project and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. On a diplomatic front, she expressed pride in being part of India's diplomatic delegation post-Operation Sindoor, visiting six nations, including the UK, Germany, and France to counter global misinformation on terrorism. At the end of the event, Purandeswari was felicitated by MLC Somu Veerraju, BJP district president P. Nagendra, and other leaders.
