Thomas Tuchel leaves Jordan Pickford in no doubt over star's England role

Daily Mirror5 days ago

Jordan Pickford is expected to start for England against Andorra as the Three Lions No1 looks to cement his spot despite competition from James Trafford and Dean Henderson
Jordan Pickford has been given a ringing endorsement of his status as England's No1.
England boss Thomas Tuchel will probably expect Pickford to have one of his quieter nights against World Cup minnows Andorra. But there has been a lingering doubt over Pickford ever since Tuchel took charge because new competition is emerging and also it is the first time England have had a new permanent manager since 2016.

Burnley 's James Trafford is seen as a big prospect for the future while Crystal Palace 's Dean Henderson showed his potential when his club won the FA Cup and it is clear they are ready to challenge in the long term. Tuchel sounded out Southampton keeper Aaron Ramsdale after taking charge and the signs pointed to Pickford facing the biggest fight on his hands since Gareth Southgate made his first choice ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

But Pickford, 31, who has won 75 caps, got a glowing reference from Tuchel when the German was asked to survey England's goalkeeping options. While Tuchel expects the likes of Trafford and Henderson to provide more competition in the future, Pickford's position looks assured for now.
Tuchel said: 'Jordan has been in goal for a long, long time, he earned his place with consistent performances at a high level in international football. It will always be a fight for every position, there is no exception for the goalkeepers. At the moment Jordan is in a good place mentally and performance-wise.
'It helped him to stabilise himself at Everton with the change of manager. With David Moyes he became very, very stable and also emotionally stable and we're very happy with that at the moment.'
Tuchel did point towards Trafford and Henderson having the ability to challenge Pickford in the long term but also suggested reasons why they still have work to do and new competition has pushed the Everton keeper this season. Trafford could move this summer with Newcastle keen while Palace hope to be in Europe after winning the FA Cup and that would boost Henderson. Ramsdale is wanted by West Ham among others after Southampton were relegated.
Tuchel said: 'All our goalkeepers are not involved in European football, they're not used to European football which would be ideal. It's not a problem, Jordan behaves and trains at the highest level and we're very, very happy with him. He's doing everything at the moment to keep his place because he feels that Dean stepped up and found another level, another gear.

'Dean got a big title with his club and was a key figure in the campaign so that helped him a lot for his confidence. He also found a title and a decisive role at Crystal Palace. He got an important and vital title for his club and he was a big figure in this campaign. This helped his confidence a lot.
'Then we have the very young James Trafford who played a fantastic, record-breaking campaign with Burnley and got clean sheets. Hopefully he can prove himself next season in the Premier League and then the race is on.
'James (Trafford) had a long, long break after his fantastic season with Burnley. He hasn't been on the pitch for four weeks, he finished the season the earliest. That's a little bit of a disadvantage for him, it's not his fault but he is pushing strongly. That's what we expect from him and he is at the moment a competitor for Dean Henderson and Jordan Pickford."

Premier League trio in Jadon Sancho transfer battle as Man Utd make decision

Jadon Sancho remains likely to leave Manchester United this summer after failing to secure a transfer to Chelsea and Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation at Old Trafford Jadon Sancho is commanding interest from three Premier League clubs and looks set to be on the move once again this summer. Ruben Amorim has decided the England international will not be part of his first team squad and is said to have no plans to integrate him into the set-up. Chelsea made their decision to not make Sancho's move permanent official as they named their Club World Cup squad on Wednesday. The Blues were forced to stump up £5million to send the winger back to United after they had satisfied condititions to make the deal permanent. ‌ Aston Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle are all keeping tabs on the 25-year-old's situation as the Red Devils look to facilitate an exit. Unai Emery's side prefer a loan deal for the ex-Borussia Dortmund star, having taken Marcus Rashford on a temporary basis in January. ‌ United would prefer a sale to bolster their funds amidst a busy summer of rebuilding, as they attempt to replenish Amorim's squad. Already the club have spent £62.5m on Matheus Cunha and a significant fee is expected to land Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. Sancho would see a return to Champions League action if a move to Newcastle or Tottenham was completed. It is claimed the sides both see Sancho as 'a strong option' as they attempt to build squads to battle on multiple fronts in 2025/26. READ MORE: Jonny Evans makes surprise announcement on future after being released by Man Utd The former Borussia Dortmund star, who has also drawn interest from his former club, enjoyed a steady if unspectacular loan at Chelsea last term. Sancho made 45 appearances as he helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League and qualify for the Champions League. But his five goals and 10 assists were not enough to convince Enzo Maresca's side to extend his stay. The player, who arrived at Old Trafford at United from Dortmund in a £73m deal, is also finding interest from Europe however. Dortmund have asked to be kept up to date on any developments over his future. And Chelsea's interest in Jamie Gittens could prompt some action, though the German side have already signed Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland this summer. ‌ Gittens is said to have already agreed terms with Chelsea, but the Blues could not make a deal with the Bundesliga giants in time for the Club World Cup. It remains to be seen if they return with another offer. Sancho's salary could prove problematic as United attempt to offload their unwanted star. It means another loan could be considered for the attacker, who has already enjoyed two spells away from the club.

£700k midfielder signs, Triantis returns, ex-hero joins - Hibs dream XI if transfer rumours are true

The transfer window will open in a matter of days, and already the rumours around the Scottish Premiership have started, with Hibs no exception after their impressive campaign last year. Set to play in European competition next season, head coach David Gray was able to turn a relegation fight into a revolution, taking the Leith outfit from the bottom of the table all the way to top three, beating Celtic and Rangers on the way. Martin Boyle and Lewis Miller have had their contracts extended by a further year, though doubts remain over key defender Rocky Bushiri, with his contract expiring this summer. A number of names have been linked with Hibs already this summer, as the club eye up another top three finish. But what would Gray's starting XI look like when the new season gets underway on August 2, if the recent transfer rumours are true? Here, The Scotsman assess what Hibs dream team could look like, if the recent transfer rumours are accurate - which can never be guaranteed, with multiple twists and turns expected in the summer transfer window. 1 . 'Good teams win when they are up against it'

Justin Devenny says Northern Ireland's gritty 1-0 win over Iceland will give the team momentum heading into September's World Cup qualifiers. Isaac Price netted the opener in the first half but the game turned when Brodie Spencer was sent off for a last-man tackle with 33 minutes to ten men of Northern Ireland dug deep and ground out a win in their final friendly before they take on Luxembourg and Germany in was only the third time a Northern Ireland team have won a game with 10 players and the first time since the 1982 World Cup against Spain."I think good teams win when they're up against it or when they've got a man sent off," said Crystal Palace's Devenny, 21."We stuck together, which I think is key to this group. The togetherness is amazing. Everyone's there for each other."Everyone's going to go above and beyond for each other. It's great to have that within a squad and I think that's what brings us up to that next level."Devenny said that the 10 men of Northern Ireland "dug deep" and that will stand by Michael O'Neill's young team come the qualifiers."It might not have been the prettiest game, but we got the result which we wanted."On the park, everyone's there talking to each other, making sure everyone's doing their jobs. "That starts from Pierce all the way up to the striker. Everyone's good at that, to be fair."Northern Ireland start their qualifying campaign in September with trips to Luxembourg and Germany, and than face Slovakia in October's window."We have got the qualifiers coming up and we're all focused on that now but I think this was an important camp to get the group together, try and build momentum because we're going to have tough games."
