French Nuclear Plant Shut down by ‘Massive' Jellyfish Swarm

A major nuclear power plant in northern France temporarily shut down because of the presence of a 'massive and unforeseeable' swarm of jellyfish inside its cooling system.
Électricité de France, the national electric utility company that operates the Gravelines nuclear power plant, said three reactors automatically shut down Sunday night and a fourth on Monday morning after jellyfish appeared in the filtration drums of the plant's water pumping stations, which it said are 'located in the non-nuclear part of the facilities.' This means all of the plant's reactors were nonoperational as of Tuesday, because its remaining two reactors were previously shut for maintenance.
The automatic shutdown 'had no impact on the safety of the facilities, the safety of personnel, or the environment,' EDF said.
The French utility said its teams were working to safely restart the reactors. Laura Mandin, a spokeswoman for EDF, said in an emailed statement Tuesday that the production units were expected to restart in the coming days, adding that it would be 'a gradual process.'
Cathy Lucas, an associate professor in marine biology at the University of Southampton in Britain, said EDF's report of a 'massive' presence of jellyfish could be a reference to a jellyfish bloom – when a specific area suddenly experiences a big increase in its jellyfish population after the gelatinous invertebrates begin to reproduce more quickly or find an environment that favors their survival.
Jellyfish are highly adaptable. Many species of jellyfish grow rapidly when the water is warm and in a specific range of salinity. This summer's heat wave in Europe – with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) in parts of the continent – has probably created ideal conditions for certain types of jellyfish to reproduce more rapidly and in higher numbers, Lucas said.
Other factors promoting jellyfish blooms include overfishing, which helps eliminate many of the jellyfish's competitors and predators, leaving more food for them, said Lucas.
When the weather is warm and the sea is calm, jellyfish tend to float closer to the surface of the water, Lucas added – and because they are weak swimmers, once they form a bloom, it is difficult for them to swim away. This could explain how jellyfish in the North Sea could have gotten sucked into the systems at Gravelines, she added.
Jellyfish forced a shutdown at the Torness nuclear plant in Scotland in 2011 and at the Oskarshamn plant in Sweden in 2013, among other incidents. In both cases, the shutdown and cleanup lasted a few days.
The Gravelines nuclear power plant is on the coast of the North Sea, about halfway between Calais and Dunkirk in northern France, and uses seawater to cool its reactors. The water is filtered through large drums designed to capture fine particles before being processed through pumping stations. Typically, the filters help stop sea life and other marine elements from getting into the pumping stations.
Ronan Tanguy, a nuclear engineer at the World Nuclear Association, told the BBC that the jellyfish's gelatinous bodies may have allowed them to 'evade the first set of filters then get caught in the secondary drum system.' He said the shutdown would have been automatically triggered for safety when the blockage prevented the systems from pumping enough water. He told the BBC that the incident was a 'non-nuclear event' and more a 'nuisance' for employees to clean up.
Mandin said EDF does not know the species of jellyfish involved in the incident.
The Gravelines plant has six pressurized water reactors that started operating between 1980 and 1985. Together, they produced about 32.7 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, equivalent to 9 percent of France's nuclear power generation, according to EDF. The plant generates enough power to meet up to 70 percent of the Hauts-de-France region's electricity needs, EDF says.

Four astronauts return home from space station after splashdown

NASA astronaut Anne McClain gives a thumbs up after returning from a tour on the International Space Station An international crew of four astronauts is back home on Earth Saturday after nearly five months aboard the International Space Station, returning safely in a SpaceX capsule. The spacecraft carrying U.S. astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan's Takuya Onishi and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov splashed down off California's coast at 8:44 a.m. local time. Their return marks the end of the 10th crew rotation mission to the space station under NASA's Commercial Crew Program, which was created to succeed the Space Shuttle era by partnering with private industry. The Dragon capsule of billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX company detached from the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday. When these capsules reenter Earth's atmosphere, they heat up to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,925 Celsius), according to NASA. Atmospheric reentry -- then the deployment of huge parachutes when the capsule gets closer to Earth -- slows its speed from 17,500 miles (28,100 kilometers ) per hour to just 16 miles per hour. After the capsule splashed down, it was recovered by a SpaceX ship and hoisted aboard. Only then were the astronauts able to breathe Earth's air again, for the first time in months. The crew will now fly to Houston to be reunited with their families. They conducted numerous scientific experiments during their time on the space station, including studying plant growth, how cells react to gravity, and the effect of microgravity on human eyes. NASA acting Administrator Sean Duffy praised the successful mission. "Our crew missions are the building blocks for long-duration, human exploration pushing the boundaries of what's possible," he said in a NASA statement. McClain said her farewell to the ISS was "bittersweet" because she may never return. "Every day, this mission depends on people from all over the world," she wrote on X. "It depends on government and commercial entities, it depends on all political parties, and it depends on commitment to an unchanged goal over many years and decades." NASA said last month it would lose about 20 percent of its workforce -- around 3,900 employees -- under cuts from the U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping effort to trim the federal workforce. Trump has meanwhile prioritized crewed missions to the Moon and Mars. The Crew-10's launch into space in March allowed two U.S. astronauts to return home after being unexpectedly stuck aboard the space station for nine months. When they launched in June 2024, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were only supposed to spend eight days in space on a test of the Boeing Starliner's first crewed flight. However, the spaceship developed propulsion problems and was deemed unfit to fly back, leaving them in space for an indefinite period. NASA announced this week that Wilmore has decided to retire after 25 years of service at the U.S. space agency. book review By Patrick Parr Time heals all wounds, so the saying goes, but too much time forgets there ever was a wound to begin with. With 'Nagasaki: The Last Witnesses' (Dutton, 2025) author and Shizuoka University professor M.G. Sheftall wants to keep the memory of that wound alive so that we don't have to endure it all over again. 'At 1102 local time,' Sheftall writes, 'Fat Man exploded at an altitude of five hundred meters over a tennis court in Matsuyama-cho, two hundred meters east of the racetrack [pilot Kermit] Beahan had used as his aiming point. For approximately eight seconds after detonation, everything (and everyone) out to about a kilometer and a half from the bomb's fireball was bathed in thermal radiation to a temperature of some four thousand degrees Celsius, which was hot enough to melt the surface of ceramic roof tiles.' Eight seconds. Take a moment and watch the clock tick by. We're in August, and it's around 35 degrees Celsius. Go ahead and add 4,000 degrees to your air conditioner. Eight. Seconds. And here's something even more unfathomable. Some of you will momentarily survive those 'thermal radiation' burns up and down your body … long enough to register one of the most horrific torments a human body has ever endured. How? Well, Sheftall uses ceramic roof tiles, but as he knows … human bone is stronger than ceramic, closer in strength to low-quality steel. So, you're still here. Barely. Sheftall is far more effective at this than me. His research for these two books has been nothing short of astounding and, as I mentioned in my review of his first book, 'Hiroshima: The Last Witnesses,' he made me feel to my core the sheer agony of a nuclear weapon. Sheftall Listening to the last witnesses But what will stand as far more memorable is the way Sheftall committed years of his life to understanding the ever-decreasing hibakusha (atomic bomb survivor) community. This is a man who has lived in Japan for nearly 40 years, has a Japanese wife and children, is bilingual and, with grace and humility, has spoken intimately with dozens of hibakusha. He shares their pain, trying to remain objective in approach. Still, as described in the book, there were moments when he could not protect himself from floods of empathy. One such story is Sheftall's personal moment with Norio Gunge, whose brother Yoshio was killed by the bomb, his body never found. Sitting with Gunge-san in his home in Kumamoto, Sheftall listens intently: 'Now, through sobs, he talks about the pain of losing a sibling and says that no one can ever understand that unless they have experienced it themselves. I tell him that I know exactly what that feels like — and then I start to lose it, too. Doing something I have never done with a hibakusha before, I put a hand around Gunge-san's shoulder, and the two of us hold that pose for what is probably only thirty seconds or so but feels much longer.' Sheftall keeps the hibakusha's experience front and center. In the days after the bombing, survivors were tortured with images that seeped deeply into their psyche. Sueko Tateno was the youngest child of five. A junior high school student at the time of the bombing, Sueko suffered from a near-suicidal anxiety: 'Every night Sueko bathed,' writes Sheftall, 'she frantically checked her body for signs of the telltale purple petechiae [bleeding under the skin] that signaled imminent death for hibakusha. Using soap and a tawashi bristle brush — an implement normally used for laundry or kitchen cleaning — she scrubbed at her skin until it bled. Yet no matter how often or hard she washed herself, she could not get over the idea that the American bomb — and the six days she had spent around burning corpses — had fatally contaminated her body.' On Aug. 9, 1945, pilot Charles Sweeney dropped the second atomic bomb over Nagasaki, the blast killing more than 70,000 people by year's end. It does not matter if you think it was justified or if you think it was a war crime. Before starting Sheftall's two-volume series, I was unclear on how I felt. Now, 900 pages later, I understand clearly: These bombs must never be used on human beings ever again. Time may heal, but we must not forget the wounds of history.
