Gareth Southgate: I'm not missing managing England

Sir Gareth Southgate says he does not miss being England manager and claims he felt the 'weight' of the job on a daily basis.
Southgate spent nearly eight years in charge of England and stepped aside last summer after his team were beaten by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
The 54-year-old also came close to guiding England to victory at Euro 2020 as his side lost on penalties by Italy at Wembley, while at the 2018 World Cup, the Three Lions suffered a defeat to Croatia in the semi-final.
Southgate endured heavy criticism during England's Euro 2024 campaign and was pelted with empty beer cups by supporters following a goalless draw against Slovenia in the group stage.
However, he has been credited with restoring positivity and pride towards England's national side during his tenure.
'It is a little bit strange [watching the team] but also I'm not missing it,' Southgate, who received his knighthood for services to English football on Wednesday, said in an interview with BBC Sport.
'I think it's important that I am on that sofa and out of their way, you know. It's theirs to take on now and I think it's important that I give the team as much space as possible.
'I think it's hard to describe because until that weight's gone you don't necessarily realise just on a day-to-day basis, you know, every hour of my day was thinking about how do I make England better, what's happening with the players, how do we do things differently.
World Cup 2018: Lost to Croatia in semi-final; then lost to Belgium in third-placed play-off
Euro 2020: Lost to Italy on penalties in the final
World Cup 2022: Lost to France in quarter final
Euro 2024: Lost to Spain in the final
'So I think… any leader of big organisations, you're constantly thinking about how to do your job as well as you can.' More Trending
Southgate was also reluctant to respond to the assessment from current England manager Thomas Tuchel, who claimed England lacked a clear playing style at Euro 2024 last year.
'I don't think it's important how I took it or what I think,' Southgate said.
'I think what's really important is for me to give the team, the manager, the space to operate. I think that's the right thing to do.
'I've had an amazing experience leading my country, but it's time for them to take it forward now and I'll be a fan at home supporting it.'

Man Utd star sent warning over his future as Bryan Mbeumo transfer looms
Rene Meulensteen believes Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo's arrival at Old Trafford could spell bad news for one of their new Manchester United teammates. United have made attacking reinforcements a number-one priority in the summer transfer window having scored only 44 Premier League goals last season. Ruben Amorim's side acted swiftly to wrap up a deal for Matheus Cunha, with the versatile Wolves forward joining for £62.5million. The Red Devils are still keen for more additions and appear to be closing in on a deal to sign Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo having lodged a second bid earlier this week. The additions of Cunha and Mbeumo – who scored 35 league goals between them last season – will enable Amorim to reshape his attacking set-up next season, especially as several high-profile names head for the exit this summer. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. But Meulensteen believes that the duo's arrival might also make life tough for those who remain at Old Trafford next season, in particular Mason Mount who will be vying for the same spot in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 lineup. Mount has started just 13 league games across his first two seasons at United in large part due to his consistent struggles with injury. Getting back to full fitness towards the end of last season, the 26-year-old issued a few timely reminders of his quality, memorably notching a brace against Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-final second leg. However, Meulensteen fears the Englishman could once again find himself on the outside looking in if Amorim wants to give his new signings a fair crack of the whip early next season. 'We have seen glimpses of Mason Mount when he got more minutes, he showed great energy and popped up in good positions in the box which was promising,' he told 'He has scored some really important goals for United, but the question will now be where he fits in with Matheus Cunha and maybe Bryan Mbeumo. More Trending 'He can only play in one of those positions off the front because he isn't going to be a striker and Cunha is not going to be on the bench. It's going to be hard for Mount next year.' Such potential reservations over playing time lead to tentative speculation over Mount's immediate future at United beyond this summer. But transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that the midfielder has no intention to leave United currently and is preparing to return to pre-season under Amorim in the coming weeks. Pep Guardiola takes aim at Pierluigi Collina after Rico Lewis hit with new ban
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has let rip at FIFA and Pierluigi Collina after learning that Rico Lewis will now serve a three game ban after his suspension was upgraded Pep Guardiola has taken a swipe at FIFA referees' boss Pierluigi Collina after Rico Lewis' ban was extended to three games. Manchester City 's England defender Lewis will miss his club's final Group match with Juventus and their first knockout game after his suspension was upgraded. That comes on top of City striker Claudio Echeverri being ruled out for the rest of the Club World Cup after suffering an ankle injury. City boss Guardiola suggested that Collina was just trying to exert his authority and insisted Lewis's challenge on Wydad's Samuel Obeng was purely accidental as he is not a dirty player. Guardiola said: 'I don't know the boss for the referees, Collina? I didn't have the honour to talk to him. I am pretty sure the referee don't know Rico. Sometimes as a defender you have to be more aggressive but both on the floor and the reaction. 'I know it could be tough. It is Rico Lewis, I can imagine what would happen with another type of player. It is what it is, three games and he can be with his girlfriend and hopefully be back for the next games if we go through. 'I know Rico and the intention was never to hurt anyone. If FIFA want to show how huge they are, send me three games and we move forward.' Argentina forward Echeverri limped out of City's last game with Al Ain and has been in a protective boot since. Guardiola admitted he does not think he will be back in time for the end of the tournament even of City go all the way in the United States. City are set to make changes against Juventus again but they need to beat the Italian champions to finish top of the Group and avoid a potential last 16 meeting with Real Madrid in Miami next Tuesday. They will also have to cope with the sweltering heat in Orlando in a 3pm kick-off against Juventus. Guardiola said: 'Problems in the ankle, two three weeks out. Unfortunately. I feel so sorry for him. We will play new players and in the next game too and in the second half. 'The selection has that in mind. In these conditions we are not ready to play 90 minutes and at half-time we will make substitutions. 'The heat is obvious. We can't change it. It's netter to change at the Atlanta stadium which is fantastic. All the teams have to handle it. The next World Cup, people know it already. We have to be ready to suffer.' Former Wales boss Rob Page named as Liverpool U21 coach
Page has been out of work since leaving the Welsh national team job last June, and he replaces Barry Lewtas. The club's academy director Alex Inglethorpe said: "Rob brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to a key role as young players look to bridge that gap from academy prospect to first-team footballer. "His recent achievements in guiding Wales to the last 16 at Euro 2020 before qualifying for the 2022 World Cup speak for themselves, but perhaps less heralded is the work that took place during his time in charge of the national team, which saw numerous pathway players make it into the senior squad. "This is something we have seen first-hand at Liverpool with several of our academy players making significant progress on the international stage under Rob's guidance." The 50-year-old managed the Wales Under-21s squad before getting the senior role, while he has also worked as manager at Port Vale and Northampton.
