Thompson beats Lyles in first 100m head-to-head since Paris Olympics - Omni sports
Jamaica's Kishane Thompson exacted a measure of revenge by beating Olympic champion Noah Lyles over 100m at the Silesia Diamond League meet on Saturday. It was the first time the two sprinters have met since Lyles was awarded Olympic gold in Paris a year ago, just five-thousandths of a second ahead of Thompson. The fast-starting Jamaican timed a joint meet record of 9.87sec for victory in the Polish city of Chorzow, with Lyles second in 9.90sec. Another American, Kenny Bednarek, rounded out the podium in 9.96sec. "It felt alright. My job is to get the job done," said Thompson. The Jamaican, who missed the cut for the 2023 world championships in Budapest, will be one of the favourites for this year's edition in Tokyo on September 13-21. But he downplayed the significance of the result. "Honestly, I compete against myself, no offence to the competition," he said. Lyles put a positive spin on his second place, saying it was a "great stepping stone". "I needed to see a sub-10," the American said. "I needed to see winning, beating people, I took out some really big heads today, people who run 9.7 and 9.8. "I am getting the confidence. It makes me really excited for not only today, but also for next week and Tokyo." Lyles was drawn in lane seven, outside Bednarek and inside Christian Coleman, with Thompson in five and South African Akani Simbine to his left. But it was Thompson who stole the march in hot and humid conditions, rocketing out of his blocks to leave the field in his wake for a true gun-to-tape display. Lyles had the joint slowest reaction of the nine-man line-up and looked to be out of even a podium finish from the start before he came through strongly over the closing 20 metres to pinch second place from Bednarek. Thompson's winning time matched the 9.87sec meet record jointly held by Americans Ronnie Baker and Fred Kerley. It did not quite match the world-leading 9.75sec he set at the Jamaican trials in June, a time which puts him sixth on the all-time list. Premier League has no say on delay over Man City charges, says chief exec - World
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said his "frustration" at waiting for a verdict in a series of financial charges against Manchester City is irrelevant as the case is in the hands of an independent hearing. The Premier League issued more than 100 charges against City in February 2023 related to alleged breaches of its financial rules and with allegedly failing to co-operate with the subsequent investigation. The case was heard by a commission between September and December last year but no decision has been published. The issue continues to hang over the league as the 2025/26 season gets underway this weekend, but Masters said his organisation has no control over when a verdict will be reached. "Once the allegations, the charge has been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected, and they are then in charge of the process and its timings," Masters told Sky Sports News. "They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that, over it or its timing. "And that's right, if you think from an independence point of view, that there is independent people making those decisions, and we just have to be waiting. "My frustration is irrelevant, really. I mean, I just have to wait, and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient." City deny any wrongdoing and have said they have a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" to clear their name. But if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty, or even be kicked out of the Premier League. City were charged with failing to report accurate financial information for nine seasons stretching from 2009/10 to 2017/18, as well as failing to provide full details of former manager Roberto Mancini's pay between 2009/10 and 2012/13. They are also charged with failing to provide full details of remuneration in contracts with players between 2010/11 and 2015/16, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation over a period from 2018 to 2023. Since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008, City's fortunes have been transformed on the field from also-rans to the dominant force in English football. Eight of their 10 top-flight league titles have come since 2012 and they also won the Champions League for the first time in 2023. A prominent British football writer has questioned whether UEFA's announcement of new partnerships with humanitarian organisations to support children in Gaza is a response to Egyptian star Mohamed Salah's post condemning the killing of former Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza as he awaited aid. On Sunday, Salah, the Liverpool and Egypt forward, reposted UEFA's brief condolence message on X to his 19.4 million followers, asking: 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' The message was in tribute to Al-Obeid, known as the 'Palestinian Pele,' who, according to the Palestine Football Association (PFA), was killed last week in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza. Al-Obeid, 41, scored more than 100 goals in his career and earned 24 caps for Palestine. The PFA says 421 footballers, including 103 children, have been killed or died from starvation in Gaza since the war began, with 288 sports facilities damaged or destroyed.
