BBC Local appoints new Head of BBC Midlands

BBC News14-02-2025

Kay Wright has been appointed Head of BBC Midlands. Kay will lead all of the BBC's local services for radio, TV and online across the West and East Midlands.
She will be responsible for the region's digital output, Midlands Today, East Midlands Today, two Sunday Politics programmes, BBC Radio WM, BBC CWR, BBC Radio Stoke, BBC Radio Shropshire, BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester, BBC Radio Derby, BBC Radio Leicester and BBC Radio Nottingham. She takes over from Hayley Valentine who became Director of BBC Scotland last year.
Kay has a wealth of experience, knowledge and passion for the region. She joined the BBC in 1999 and went on to lead BBC Radio Leicester and BBC CWR in the Midlands as Executive Editor and before joining the BBC worked in regional and national newspapers.
Most recently she has been heading up TV and digital news output in the North East of England and before that headed up the BBC in the Midlands on an interim basis in 2023.
Kay Wright says: 'Having spent much of my career in Leicester, my heart truly belongs in the Midlands. I can't wait to get back to work with the enormously talented, creative and committed news and programme-makers this region boasts. It will be a huge privilege to work with BBC colleagues as well as regional stakeholders to deliver the highest quality content for our audiences.'
Jason Horton, Director of Production for BBC Local, says: 'Kay is a hugely experienced editorial leader who has led a number of teams across the Midlands over the past few years. Her relentless focus on our audiences, understanding what they want from BBC Local, her creativity and her leadership, are qualities that I am sure will make her time leading the BBC across the Midlands a huge success. I am excited to see what she achieves.'
The BBC has transformed local services in the Midlands, and across England, by putting local information at the heart of the online experience for audiences. This means greater news provision for 43 areas including a new dedicated online service launched in Wolverhampton last year.
Across BBC Local, our News Online websites have seen huge growth since we transformed our offer. Between Jan-Oct 2022 and Jan-Oct 2024 we have seen an increase of 41% in terms of average weekly traffic (from 11.8m to 16.7m).
Our regional news programmes including Midlands Today and East Midlands Today at 6.30pm are the most watched news programmes on any channel in the region and are significant part of a family of programmes consistently reaching more viewers than any other news programme in England.
The Midlands is a big part of the BBC's Across the UK strategy to better represent and serve audiences by moving shows, talent, teams, and content to the region. In the last few years the BBC has moved hundreds of additional hours of network radio programming to the city – including BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat, three new 1Xtra shows meaning the network will be live from Birmingham every weekday from 10am-4pm. This week we announced that BBC Asian Network will complete its move to Birmingham by April. Hit drama series Silent Witness has moved to the West Midlands and the MasterChef brand has moved production to new studios in Digbeth.
Kay will take up her new role as Head of BBC Midlands from Monday 17 March.

Inside the life of The Gold's Douglas Baxter and if he really existed

Inside the life of The Gold's Douglas Baxter and if he really existed The Gold season 2 is streaming on the BBC iPlayer BBC's drama The Gold has made a triumphant return to our screens with its second season, delving once more into the infamous Brink's-Mat heist and the subsequent fate of the stolen hoard of gold bullion, diamonds, and cash. Neil Forsyth, who pens the drama, expertly weaves together real events and imaginative storytelling in this final chapter of the series. Just like in the first instalment, viewers are greeted with a disclaimer before each episode, which highlights the dramatic embellishments for storytelling purposes. ‌ The narrative for the BBC's latest series is spurred on by a host of new characters, some crafted purely for narrative momentum. ‌ New faces gracing the second season include Logan Campbell (portrayed by Tom Hughes), Tony Lundy (Stephen Campbell Moore), and Douglas Baxter (Joshua McGuire), sparking curiosity among the audience, particularly about the character Douglas Baxter, the money launderer, and his origins. Questions have arisen concerning the reality of Douglas Baxter's existence within the context of BBC's The Gold, reports the Express. Douglas Baxter was created for BBC's The Gold (Image: BBC ) Article continues below Is Douglas Baxter from BBC's The Gold real? Douglas makes his introduction in the show's sophomore season, as robber Charlie Miller (Sam Spruell) co-opts him to launder the proceeds from the Brink's-Mat heist. While initially dubious about collaborating with the South London criminal, Douglas soon recognises the scale of the opportunity presenting the pinnacle laundering task of his life. In truth, Douglas is not a real figure. ‌ The creator Forsyth illuminated the backstory of Douglas stating: "Douglas Baxter is a composite character inspired by some of those involved in the Brink's-Mat story. Douglas Baxter was a key figure in the show (Image: BBC ) "Baxter is an Isle of Man financial advisor who gets brought into the story by Charlie Miller and he ends up being part of an extensive money laundering chain that stretches all the way to the Caribbean. ‌ "He's a really interesting character in our show, and I think he's brilliantly played by Joshua McGuire." Although Douglas isn't real, he is derived from real-life figures and the research carried out by Forsyth and The Gold's creators. Joshua McGuire as Douglas Baxter in BBC's The Gold (Image: BBC ) ‌ Forsyth further explained: "We do a huge amount of research with The Gold, but then we have to tell a cohesive version of a very complicated story, so of course creative licence is used for that and other reasons. But theseries is very much inspired by real events." Douglas is a grammar-school educated, Cambridge graduate lawyer, who finds himself down on his luck after a criminal conviction for drug possession. However, his luck takes a turn after working for Charlie and involving his old university mate Logan. ‌ Reflecting on the complex character crafted by Forsyth, actor McGuire expressed: "It was so exciting to come in and be part of the second half. Douglas Baxter finds himself making a fortune thanks to money laundering (Image: BBC ) "Sometimes I think that can be quite nerve wracking because it's something that's already rolling, there's a sort of language that already exists and you're stepping into it. But it was just really nice to be able to feel part of an expansion of something." ‌ He continued to comment on his performance: "Everything I needed for Baxter was all in Neil's writing. "It was all there on the page and it's always, for me, the most important place to jump off. I absolutely tried to garner as much information as I could. "Neil and the researcher from series one wrote a book off the back of the first series, and Neil gave me that, which I found incredibly helpful." Death in Paradise star 'wasn't ready' as she addresses heartbreaking exit

Sally Bretton has portrayed Humphrey Goodman's fiancée, Martha Lloyd, since 2017 Sally Bretton, famed for her stint as Martha Lloyd on the much-loved BBC series Death in Paradise and its spin-off Beyond Paradise, has admitted she wasn't quite ready to leave the sun-soaked detective drama behind in 2017. Taking on the role of the beloved detective Humphrey Goodman's fiancée (portrayed by Kris Marshall), Sally made her debut as Martha in 2017. Swiftly winning over audiences as she reignited a past romance with Humphrey, ultimately leading to his departure from Saint Marie for London, Sally made her debut as Martha in 2017. ‌ During an interview on This Morning, Sally openly expressed her willingness to have prolonged her time on the show. Addressing whether she was happy to wrap up filming in the Caribbean, Sally firmly replied: "No!" ‌ She elaborated, "I was only out there for four or five weeks. I didn't get any of the hurricanes; I got it at just the perfect time. I had an amazing time." As for what lies ahead for Martha in the spin-off Beyond Paradise, Sally gave viewers a glimpse into Martha and Humphrey's new life in Shipton Abbott, Devon, where they embark on fostering after their poignant IVF endeavours, reports the Express. Eagerly seizing the chance to step back into Martha's shoes for the BBC One spin-off, Sally recounted how the opportunity came up during a chat with This Morning hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary. "I was part of Kris' exit storyline from the Caribbean, and then we were in the first lockdown, and the phone rang," she told the duo. "I was like, 'Oh my God!'. Even if it doesn't happen, it was just three weeks of thinking about that while the world had stopped. It was to have something to sink my teeth into." ‌ The show also stars Open All Hours legend Barbara Flynn as Martha's mother, Anne, with Zahra Ahmadi featuring as Humphrey's workmate at Shipton Abbott's police force, the steadfast DS Esther Williams. Dylan Llewellyn and Felicity Montagu, Humphrey's fellow officers and mates, complete the ensemble. The third series of Beyond Paradise, which concluded earlier this year, saw Humphrey and Martha seemingly finding steadier ground as they progress with their fostering endeavours. However, the final episode ended in heartbreak as the had to say goodbye to their foster child, Rosie.
