Australia's Starc comfortable with IPL pullout regardless of repercussion
MELBOURNE - Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is comfortable with his decision to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the India-Pakistan clashes last month regardless of any repercussions, the 35-year-old said.
The IPL was suspended on May 9 in the wake of hostilities between the two. It resumed on May 17 after the nuclear-armed neighbours agreed to a ceasefire.
While most IPL foreign recruits returned to complete their franchise commitment, the Delhi Capitals duo of Starc and fellow Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk took no further part in the 10-team league.
"I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled," Starc told the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday.
"Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision."
Starc was in Dharamsala, near the Pakistan border, for Delhi's May 9 match against the Punjab Kings. The contest was abandoned midway through, although league organisers blamed it on a floodlights failure.
"Jake and I chose not to (return). So it was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that," Starc said.
He opted out of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan earlier this year citing personal reasons and has skipped the IPL more than once to preserve himself for international cricket.
The left-arm quick said he withdrew from the remainder of the IPL because of the extraordinary circumstances.
"I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like," Starc said.
"These are different circumstances ... I had a discussion back home then came to a decision, and whatever comes from that I'm comfortable with that and we move forward." REUTERS

SYDNEY - The Auckland Blues kept alive their title defence with a last-gasp 20-19 victory over the Waikato Chiefs and the ACT Brumbies beat the Wellington Hurricanes 35-28 to complete the Super Rugby Pacific semi-final line-up on Saturday. The Blues have been playing catch-up since losing their first two matches of the year, however, and they battered away at the Chiefs defence after the hooter until lock Josh Beehre reached over the line to score and Beauden Barrett converted. The Brumbies hit back in more prosaic fashion with hooker Billy Pollard going over twice and prop Allan Alaalatoa once, all from close range, to give the hosts a 21-14 halftime lead. The home side showed they also had some flair soon after the break when an inside pass from Rob Valetini set fullback Tom Wright free to carve through the defensive line for a fourth try. The Hurricanes, though, responded in kind when winger Bailyn Sullivan ran a beautiful line to cut the deficit to 28-21 with 55 minutes on the clock. The Brumbies went back to battering down the front door for their fifth try from James Slipper but his fellow prop Pasilio Tosi powered over 14 minutes from time to make it a one-score game again. The Hurricanes pressed for another try to send the tie into overtime but the Brumbies managed field position well and held firm to keep the Australian flag flying in the competition. "It felt good to earn ourselves another week, we knew it was probably going to take everything we had," said Brumbies skipper Alaalatoa. Hurricanes co-captain Du'Plessis Kirifi was disappointed but said his team should take some pride in finishing the season strongly after a stuttering start. Ronaldo says he does not plan to play at Club World Cup Al-Nassr and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo said on Saturday he did not plan to play at the Club World Cup in the United States, despite being courted by clubs participating in the expanded 32-team tournament. Speculation over the 40-year-old's future intensified last month when FIFA President Gianni Infantino said discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the Club World Cup, despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. Al-Nassr's sporting director Fernando Hierro said last month they were negotiating with Ronaldo over a contract extension but faced competition from a host of clubs eager to sign the five-times Ballon d'Or winner. Ronaldo himself added to the uncertainty after Al-Nassr's season-ending match at Al-Fateh, posting on social media: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written." Asked about the possibility of signing for another club in the coming days in order to play at the Club World Cup later this month, Ronaldo told reporters: "It's irrelevant, at the moment it doesn't make sense to talk about things other than the national team. Marc Marquez fastest in Aragon Grand Prix qualifying for 99th career pole
Ducati's Marc Marquez broke the lap record at the Aragon Grand Prix on Saturday to clinch the 99th pole position of his career and fifth of the season, pipping his brother Alex of Gresini Racing to top spot. Championship leader Marc set the early pace when he became the first rider to go under a minute and 46 seconds but the Spaniard was soon pushed down to third when Alex went fastest, followed by VR46 Racing's Franco Morbidelli. But Marc put his head down and produced an aggressive lap, with his red Ducati sliding around some of the curves as he clocked one minute and 45.704 seconds at the MotorLand circuit. "The first lap with the first tyre was clean. I just did one lap and then I stopped because I was already (one minute and) 45.9 without exaggerating, but then I exaggerated too much (on my next attempt)," Marc said. "(I was) trying to be too fast, even lost time. Of course, the riding style for the main race and the sprint is different, but the lap was not the smoothest lap of my life." Marc's fifth pole of the season put him in prime position to claim a record-extending seventh MotoGP victory at Aragon. His team mate Francesco Bagnaia also struggled with stability on his bike but managed to go fourth fastest while Red Bull KTM's factory team riders Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder will join him on the second row on Sunday.
