Clark Hunt's 9-year-old relative dies in the Texas floods

NBC Sports08-07-2025
Janie Hunt, the 9-year-old cousin of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, died in the fatal floods in Texas last week.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Janie Hunt of Dallas was one of the missing campers from Camp Mystic in the Texas Hill Country. Her body was found and identified Saturday afternoon.
She was the great-granddaughter of late American oil baron William Herbert Hunt.
Clark Hunt's wife, Tavia, posted a message of faith and grief on Instagram.
'Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods . . . and the tragic loss of so many lives – including a precious Hunt cousin, along with several friends' little girls,' Tavia Hunt wrote.
More than 100 people have died in the flooding in Texas since Friday, including at least 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic.
Georgia Congressman Buddy Carter told Fox News his two grandchildren, who were Janie Hunt's cousins, survived.
The Cowboys and Texans each contributed $500,000 for flood relief.

An ex-NFL player has been convicted in a dogfighting case. A record number of dogs were taken from him

A former NFL player has been convicted for running an operation that bred and trafficked 'grand champion' dogs and their offspring for dogfighting, the Department of Justice said. LeShon Johnson, 54, a former running back for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants, was convicted by a federal jury in Oklahoma on six felony counts of violating the federal Animal Welfare Act's prohibitions against 'possessing, selling, transporting, and delivering animals to be used in fighting ventures,' the department said. Following the verdict, the ex-NFLer surrendered 190 dogs from his 'Mal Kant Kennels,' the largest number ever seized from a single person in a federal dogfighting case, officials said. He faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on each count. 'My client respects the verdict,' defense attorney Courtney Jordan told CNN, noting Johnson was convicted of only six of 23 counts. He was acquitted on 17 counts of possessing a dog for use in an animal fighting venture, court records show. 'The jury saw there is more to this story than what the government has made it out to be. He is a family man, a good person who loves his dogs. He was never involved in dogfighting himself, per se,' Jordan said. Johnson's conviction recalls the 2007 federal case against then-NFL quarterback Michael Vick, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy involving illegal dogfighting. Admitting he participated in killing dogs and ran a business that involved illegal gambling, Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison. After his 2009 release, he advocated against dogfighting, returned to the NFL and now coaches a college team. While dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, more than 40,000 people participate in enterprises that breed, condition and train dogs to be 'placed in a pit to fight each other for spectator entertainment and profit,' the Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals say. In Johnson's case, 'the American government is really after the American pit bull terrier, and that's what LeShon Johnson was breading,' his lawyer said. The breed is 'the dog of choice' for fighting in the United States, according to the ASPCA. Johnson had a 2004 state conviction for dogfighting, the Justice Department said. In the federal case against him, Johnson bred and trafficked 'fighting dogs' and their puppies for dogfighting, 'profiting from the cruel and illegal industry,' evidence presented to the jury showed. 'This criminal profited off of the misery of innocent animals and he will face severe consequences for his vile crimes,' Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. 'This case underscores the Department of Justice's commitment to protecting animals from abuse – 190 dogs are now safe thanks to outstanding collaborative work by our attorneys and law enforcement components.' The federal government is pursuing the forfeiture of the dogs, after which the US Marshals Service would care for them, the department said.

How Erin Andrews, Charissa Thompson balance work and real-life relationships with NFL's biggest stars

Fox Sports personalities Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson lifted the lid on their close bond with the NFL's biggest stars following their offseason vacation with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and his girlfriend, Taylor Swift. During a fan Q&A on the latest installment of their 'Calm Down' podcast, Andrews and Thompson didn't hold back when asked how they balance being professional and having 'fan energy' while interviewing the league's megastars. 'I don't,' said Andrews, 47, who is Fox's lead sideline reporter and covered Super Bowl 2025 in February. 'I'm a huge fan of all the guys I cover and I get so excited to talk to them.' 7 Charissa Thompson and Erin Andrews covering Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, as the 2025 game was aired on Fox on February 9. Instagram/Charissa Thompson Thompson, who hosts the 'Fox NFL Kickoff' show and 'Thursday Night Football' on Prime Video, agreed with Andrews. 'I still get really excited for whoever it is,' Thompson, 43, said. 'I remember [Buccaneers quarterback] Baker Mayfield has this crazy, crazy comeback and I totally turned into a fan and that was probably not professional, but I didn't care, that was f–king awesome. I'm a sports fan and dramatic finishes, and no matter who it is — next week, it could be the opposite in terms of who I'm rooting for. 'I like to watch good football and if something good happens for guys we root for and care about, then yeah, I don't care… There is a time and a place, but then you also still need to have the balance of professional cadence.' 7 CeeDee Lamb #88 of the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott #4 of the Dallas Cowboys are interviewed by Erin Andrews after the game against the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium on November 12, 2023 in Arlington, Texas. 'Listen, it's taken us a minute to get where we are,' said Andrews, who is married to retired two-time Stanley Cup champion Jarret Stoll. 'You have to build up credibility… with not only with viewers at home, your bosses and also, the players and the coaches. You can't go into things when you first start with any job like, 'Oh my god!' People will look at you and be like,' You're an a–hole.' 7 (L-R) Charissa Thompson, Tony Gonzalez, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Andrew Whitworth, Richard Sherman on set of the TNF on Prime postgame show after a Seahawks-Bears game at Soldier Field on December 26, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. And it's so true. '… There is nothing wrong with sitting on the [show] desk with Baker after an amazing game or any of these guys and be like, 'Can we just talk about this last play?' It's awesome.' During a previous episode of their 'Calm Down podcast, Andrews and Thompson publicly encouraged Swift to give the three-time Super Bowl winner a chance after he failed to pass along a friendship bracelet at a July 2023 Eras Tour show with his telephone number on it. Swift attended her first Chiefs game in September 2023 before stepping out publicly with Kelce a month later.
