Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Wednesday "apologised" for the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad last week that claimed more than 270 lives.In an exclusive interview with the Group Editor-in-Chief of Times Now and Times Now Navbharat, Navika Kumar, Chandrasekaran said, "It is an extremely difficult situation where I have no words to express to console any of the families of those who died."advertisement"I deeply regret that this accident happened in a Tata-run airline. And I feel very sorry. All we can do is to be with the families at this time, grieve with them and we will do everything to support them at this hour and beyond," Chandrasekran was quoted as saying in a release.
Over 270 people were killed on June 12 when a London-bound Air India plane -- a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner -- carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad and crashed less than a minute after takeoff.When specifically asked about the reason for the crash and whether Air India is privy to any preliminary findings, Chandrasekaran said, "One would have to wait for the probe to conclude."The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has begun its investigations into the crash, and the government has also appointed a high-level committee.advertisementChandrasekaran said that it could be a month until some of the preliminary findings are out. He, however, claimed that AI171, the flight that crashed, had a clean history and there were no red flags that had been raised."There are speculations about human error, speculations about airlines, speculations about engines, maintenance, all kinds," Chandrasekaran said."There are a lot of speculations and lot of theories. But the fact that I know so far is this particular aircraft, this specifical tail, AI-171 has a clean history. As for the engines, the right engine was a new engine put in March 2025. The left engine was last serviced in 2023 and due for its next maintenance check in December 2025. Both engine histories are clean."Both pilots were exceptional. Captain Sabharwal had more than 11,500 hours of flying experience, the first officer Clive (Kundar) had more than 3400 hours of flying experience. What I hear from colleagues is that they were excellent pilots and great professionals. So, we can't jump to any conclusions. I am told by all the experts that the black box and recorders will definitely tell the story. So, we just have to wait for that," he said.When asked about the show-cause notices that had been issued by the DGCA in the recent past to Air India or fines levied on the airline for delays and operational matters, Chandrasekaran said these were not related to the AI171 aircraft.advertisement"These are different from safety issues. If there is a safety issue, there is no way the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) will allow us to fly. And with respect to this specific aircraft, what I have seen is what I have told you."Chandrasekaran also said that none of the 33 Boeing 787 Dreamliners that are part of Air India's fleet are serviced by Turkish Technic, amid questions being raised about any Turkish link to the aircraft that crashed."None of them (the 33 Dreamliners) are maintained by Turkish Technic. Most of them are maintained by AIESL (AI Engineering Services Limited) or SIA Engineering Company (whose parent organization is Singapore Airlines)," he said.The former union minister for civil aviation Praful Patel has questioned the 'silence' of Singapore Airlines, which he said, apart from being a shareholder in Air India, was also responsible for maintaining a significant number of Air India's wide-body aircraft.Chandrasekaran, in the interview, responded to Patel's claims, stating, "Singapore Airlines has been a great partner. And since we took over, they have helped us in many dimensions. Even some of the safety procedures, the best processes, we have taken from Singapore Airlines.advertisement"We have taken it from Vistara, and many of the processes where we needed best-in-class benchmarks, they have helped us. They have reached out even at this time, their CEO is in constant touch with me. Whether it is customer experience or any other process, they are always available. They have been offering all the help they can."Chandrasekaran was also asked about whistleblowers who had spoken out against Boeing, specifically in the context of the manufacturing processes associated with the production of the 787 Dreamliner.The Air India Chairman responded by saying, "These are things that are being dealt with by investigative agencies in the US, but overall 787s have been flying for a very long time, we already had 27 787s by the time we bought Air India. And we have not had any red flags in our checks," according to the release.Since the June 12 tragedy, several Air India flights have been cancelled, or faced delays, raising serious concerns among passengers.advertisementChandrasekaran acknowledged Air India needs to do a better job communicating with passengers about these matters."There are more than 1100 flights that we fly every day. And in the last six days, there have been in general, anywhere from 5 to 16 or 18 flights, depending on the day, that have been cancelled.""We've got to do a better job at communication. We have put a strategic communications team in the last three days," Chandrasekaran said.Chandrasekhar has met with senior officials of Boeing following the tragedy. He said: "So I did connect with both Boeing and GE at the highest levels. Air India on Wednesday said that it will reduce its international services that use widebody aircraft by 15% for the 'next few weeks' to ensure operational stability. The changes will also improve operational efficiency and minimise inconvenience to passengers, the airline said. The decision came amid disruptions to services following the crash of Air India's Boeing 787 aircraft in Ahmedabad on June 12. Safety checks Investigating authorities are continuing their efforts to find out the reasons for the accident, Air India said in a statement on Wednesday. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation had mandated enhanced safety inspection of Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. Out of Air India's 33 Dreamliner aircraft, 26 were cleared for service after inspection, the airlines said. The checks on the remaining aircraft will be conducted 'in the coming days', it added. 'The fact that 26 aircraft have been cleared gives reassurance in the safety measures and procedures that we follow,' said Air India. The airline said that as a precautionary measure, it was also conducting checks on its fleet of Boeing 777 planes, another widebody aircraft. On Tuesday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said that checks conducted on Air India's 787 fleet had not revealed major safety concerns. Schedule changes Air India said that 83 of its flights had been cancelled in the last six days due to a range of factors. The factors that led to the disruptions included airspace closures in West Asia, night curfew in the airspaces of several European and East Asian countries, the safety inspections and the 'necessary cautious approach being taken by the engineering staff' and the pilots. The decision to temporarily reduce its international services operated on widebody aircraft was because of the 'compounding circumstances that Air India is facing'. 'The cuts [in services] will be implemented between now and June 20 and will continue thereafter until at least mid-July,' the airline said. 'This effectively adds to our reserve aircraft availability to take care of any unplanned disruptions.' Air India said that passengers affected by the changes will be informed in advance and that it will try to accommodate them on alternate flights. Passengers will also be offered the option to either reschedule their travel without additional cost or avail a full refund. Two hundred and forty-two persons were aboard the 787-8 aircraft – enroute to London's Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad – that crashed just 33 seconds after taking off on June 12. Only one passenger survived with ' impact injuries '. The aircraft's crash into the hostel building of the BJ Medical College also killed at least 33 persons on the ground. The crash is being viewed as the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade and the first fatal incident involving a 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

65% of Indians trust government to regulate AI, finds report

Around 67% Indians want companies to clearly disclose when they use artificial intelligence (AI) in products and services, according to the newly released Ipsos AI Monitor 2025. The survey, conducted across 30 countries with over 23,000 participants, also found that 65% of Indians trust the government to regulate AI responsibly. Globally, 79% of the respondents expected products and services using AI to disclose usage. Indians were found to be more trusting of AI-generated content by companies than global citizens across multiple creative applications. In enhancing product images, 47% of Indians expressed trust compared to 34% globally. Similarly, 44% trusted AI to write product descriptions or instructions (global: 30%), another 44% trusted AI to create advertising visuals or videos (global: 30%), and 45% were comfortable with AI writing product reviews, compared to just 29% globally. However, preferences for AI-generated versus human-created content showed polarised views. When it came to news articles or websites, 46% of Indians preferred human-generated content while 40% favored AI. Photojournalism yielded similar results, with 46% in favor of human work and 41% supporting AI. In advertising, including TV and social media videos on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, 47% preferred human-driven content and 40% leaned towards AI. For movies released on streaming platforms or in theatres, 48% chose human creators, whereas 38% were comfortable with AI-generated films. Over six in ten Indians believe AI could soon take over human tasks. Specifically, 63% think AI could screen job applicants, 65% see it writing scripts for movies and TV shows, and 62% believe it could generate realistic sports content. Additionally, 65% foresee AI creating political ads with realistic videos, 63% expect it to assist with order-taking at restaurants, and another 63% believe AI will write news articles and stories for publications. Around 64% see AI creating brand advertising content, 66% think it will dominate online search results, 62% expect it to target disinformation campaigns, and 63% see AI targeting advertising messages. 'There is concern around trust and transparency and citizens expect companies to be transparent about their AI usage and the government to responsibly protect citizens' interests with regulations around AI. AI could snap up jobs in the areas of content, creative and servicing jobs in the future and could impact thousands of jobs in the future. The survey provides an early warning on what the future could unfold and AI emerging as a great disruptor. Citizens could reprioritize their courses/ skills to brace for the future,' stated Amit Adarkar, CEO, Ipsos India. Interestingly, Indians were seen to be both excited (65%) and nervous (66%) about AI, revealing what Ipsos termed as 'the wonder and worry of AI.' A similar emotional paradox was observed globally, with 52% of international respondents excited and 53% nervous about the increasing role of AI. When it came to fairness and discrimination, 67% of Indians believed AI would not show bias, compared to 66% who said the same about humans—placing both on equal footing. Globally, 54% trusted AI not to discriminate, whereas only 45% extended that trust to humans. The Indian public also sees significant promise in AI over the next three to five years. A majority said it could positively impact their jobs (55%), the economy (49%), entertainment options (50%), task efficiency (51%), and healthcare (50%). Still, half of Indian respondents (49%) expressed concern that AI could increase the spread of disinformation. 'Artificial Intelligence + Human Intelligence while will be the future, but strict regulations from the government will need to be the order of the day. At the same time, augmenting AI usage and being AI savvy in one's area of work will bring in the efficiencies and an AI ready workforce, if one is not to be left out. We are already seeing AI simplifying mundane and time-consuming tasks,' added Adarkar. The survey was conducted by Ipsos using its Global Advisor online platform and, in India, its IndiaBus platform, between March 21 and April 4, 2025. In India, approximately 1,800 respondents were interviewed face-to-face and 400 online, representing urban populations across metros and Tier 1 to Tier 3 towns, spanning socio-economic classes A, B, and C. Globally, the sample size ranged from 500 to 2,000 per country. While results from India and several other markets reflect more urban and connected populations, the insights present a valuable glimpse into public sentiment in a rapidly evolving AI landscape.
