Cannes Film Festival issues major red carpet dress code ban
The Cannes Film Festival has just announced a major shakeup to its red carpet dress code.
Ahead of the 2025 festival, the iconic cinematic event has banned guests from wearing outfits that showcase full nudity or 'voluminous' ensembles.'
'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted,' per the festival's new rules.
'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.'
The Hollywood Reporter reports that a rep for the festival said the charter was updated to reflect 'certain rules that have long been in effect.'
The rep shared that the festival's intention was 'not to regulate attire per se but to prohibit full nudity on the carpet' per the institutional framework of the festival as well as French law.
The update comes as red carpet looks have trended towards the sheer and revealing in recent years, with Kanye West's wife Bianca Censori famously wearing a completely see-through dress to The Grammys this year.
Cannes has always had strict dress codes, specifically for screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, where the most glamorous events are usually held.
Black tie and evening wear is required for those screenings. The guidance reads: 'little black dress, cocktail dress, dark-colored pantsuit, a dressy top with black pants; elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel; a black or navy-blue suit with bow-tie or dark-colored tie. Tote-bags, backpacks or large bags are prohibited.'
The backlash online to revealing looks has made it clear that many people agree with Cannes' stance and aren't comfortable with the evolution of modesty standards.
There's a long list of celebs who have ditched bras in the past, including Doja Cat, Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa, Rihanna, and Miley Cyrus – all of whom have faced criticism for the bold choice.
User @tabxssum wrote: 'I'm sorry I just find sheer dresses like these where you can see the boobs/everything but the nipple is so unprofessional/tacky. It also looks so cheap.'
@DutchDidNothingWrong agreed, commenting: 'Getting sick of famous people doing acts of exhibitionism at formal events.'
User @Perfect_Restaurant_4 put it plainly, writing: 'Too much nips. I'd be so embarrassed to talk to her with all her boobs right there. Topless on a beach/around the pool fine, but not boobs out at a formal occasion.'
Others argued that baring it all makes stars seem desperate. @Felonious_Minx wrote: 'I have the reflex to dislike 'naked' type clothing right off the bat now because it is so common and screams desperation for attention.' More Trending
But some have argued that nipple-baring looks can be empowering for women. Olivia Wilde, for example, said in a 2021 interview with Vogue that she supports 'freeing the nipple.'
Wilde said: 'Absolutely. It's culturally specific because obviously in other countries there's less of a fear of the nipple. I think that we can all really benefit from making sure that we don't allow the stigmatisation of women's bodies to infect our own perspective of ourself.'
She went on to call out society's 'puritanical perspective' on women's nipples, reflecting on how breastfeeding changed her relationship with her breasts.
She said: 'If we are allowed opportunities to celebrate our body, it has an effect. It has an effect on how we treat one another and how we treat ourselves. I wish that in this country, we weren't so terrified of women's bodies in the way that we are and have this kind of puritanical perspective on nipples.'

Julia Fox wigs out after changing her signature look and reflects on 'horrible' breakup from Kanye West
Julia Fox proved she could ditch her outlandish, exhibitionist style - at least temporarily - in favor of a more traditional, natural look while promoting her new movie The Trainer in New York City on Monday. The 35-year-old former dominatrix bleached her natural brunette mane into oblivion beginning in February 2024, leaving her with a damaged pixie cut, and she only stopped bleaching her eyebrows last month after doing so since 2023. Julia bared her shoulders in a Jean Paul Gaultier spring 1997 mesh tube dress, featuring an old Hollywood print, along with brown knee-high boots and darker brown bag selected by her BFF/stylist Briana Andalore. Hairstylist John Novotny coiffed Fox's waist-length brunette wig, which was parted in the middle. The Milan-born, Manhattan-raised provocateur's wavy hairpiece more than resembled her natural brunette mane from back when she enjoyed a five-week fling with disgraced designer-rapper Kanye 'Ye' West in early 2022. The 35-year-old former dominatrix bleached her natural brunette mane into oblivion beginning in February 2024, leaving her with a damaged pixie cut, and she only stopped bleaching her eyebrows last month after doing so since 2023 Julia reflected on the high-profile split, which came before she started filming The Trainer, while making her first-ever appearance on CBS Mornings earlier that day with writer-star Vito Schnabel. 'I was going through a lot during that time. I was coming off of, like, a very public breakup. It was horrible,' Fox lamented to Gayle King. 'And I just wanted to go to work and be able to just be somebody else. I loved being her. I feel like I have so much in common with her in terms of you know being, like, overlooked or not taken seriously or just dismissed. 'And I feel like that's why our characters kind of just, like, had this unique love story.' The Presence actress portrays celebrity trainer Jack Flex's (Schnabel) hungry assistant Bee Luciani in Tony Kaye's upcoming 'punk Marvel film' called The Trainer, which has yet to secure US distribution after screening at the Rome and Tribeca film festivals. Julia later changed into a shorter black wig with a spit curl, a white babydoll-bubble dress, and matching platform pumps to attend a screening of the star-studded comedy on Monday night at the Village East by Angelika. The Trainer also features Steven Van Zandt, Beverly D'Angelo, Bella Thorne, Gina Gershon, Stephen Dorff, Lenny Kravitz, Paris Hilton, John McEnroe, Taylour Paige, Gus Van Sant, Gavin Rossdale, Lauren Sánchez, Finneas, Chris Rock, Snoop Dogg, Jason Momoa, Julian Schnabel, Bono, and Sharon Stone. But audiences can next catch Fox as the seductive Elsie White in Justin Tipping's NFL satanic horror film HIM - hitting US theaters September 19 - produced by Jordan Peele. The Down the Drain singer has also been hard at work producing and judging the second season of her design competition OMG Fashun, but Peacock postponed the May release 'due to unexpected delays' but it's 'still in active production.' Fox is also every bit the influencer with lucrative paid partnerships for brands like Mienne, Lemme, and Revolve. On the personal front, the 360 video vixen - who's been celibate since 2021 - has primary custody of her four-year-old son Valentino from her three-year marriage to Brooklyn private pilot Peter Artemiev, which ended in 2022.

Bella Hadid channels Jessica Simpson's Daisy Duke as she showcases her legs in micro shorts
Bella Hadid showcased her model's legs as she went on a snack run in Aspen on Sunday. The runway beauty, 28, who seemed to joining a little downtime after working at Cannes and in London, stepped out in very short denim shorts, aka Daisy Dukes, similar to those worn by Jessica Simpson in The Dukes of Hazard two decades ago. Hadid had the good sense to wear something a little more comfortable than high heels favored by the fictional Daisy, and opted for a pair of brown sheepskin micro Uggs. She covered up in a white T-shirt and a red 'letterman' type jacket with white stripes. Her long, blonde hair was styled straight and she seemed to be wearing full makeup behind her large framed sunglasses. After gassing up her luxury SUV, the cover model took off for her next adventure in the tony mountain town favored by the rich and famous, especially for winter skiing. It was unclear if Hadid was enjoying a girls trip with friends, or a vacation with her boyfriend, Adan Banuelos. The fashionista has been dating the horse trainer, 37, since October 2023. In an interview with British Vogue that her boyfriend was unaware of her fame when they first met. 'For me, that was such a breath of fresh air,' the ___ revealed. The two met when she hired him to train her to work with cutting horses, a specialized style of riding that allows a rider to separate cattle from a herd in a controlled and skillful manner. 'He's the youngest Mexican cowboy to ever be inducted into the Hall of Fame, ' she bragged, hinting at a possible future. 'He works for his family, he works for his customers and he works to hopefully build a home and a family one day.' 'Our biggest dream is to have a summer camp for children,' she said of one of their goals. 'Being in a relationship – he works so much, I work so much – we come together to have these conversations,' she said. 'He knows my passion is philanthropy. I think that's where I struggle being in this world of so much stimulation. I always feel overstimulated and I wish I could just be somewhere helping everybody,' she said. She covered up in a white T-shirt and a red 'letterman' type jacket with white stripes. Her long, blonde hair was styled straight and she seemed to be wearing full makeup behind her sunglasses Hadid has been outspoken in her support for the Palestinian people in the ongoing conflict with Israel that has killed more than 54,000 men, women and children since October 7, 2023. 'I think I would wake up in the morning feeling better every day if I could wake up for somebody else, and not for something that meant that I was in a photograph or for me to make more money. I wish I could just be somebody for somebody else,' she explained. Another of Hadid's goals is motherhood. 'I can't wait to be a mom. I think that I'm somebody for a lot of people, but in the real intimate way of being the person that somebody can count on consistently, that will change my life for me. And I cannot wait.'

Frederick Forsyth – the reporter who turned his foreign adventures into best-selling thrillers
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FROM RAF pilot to journalist with romantic links to a Hollywood star, Frederick Forsyth loved to travel the world and get up to mischief. It is no wonder the dashing former MI6 agent used his adventures to help him write more than 25 books, selling 75million copies in a half-century long literary career. And a year-long assignment in Soviet East Germany, when he ran errands for Britain's secret services, is thought to have inspired many of his other thriller novels. Last year, the twice-married author, who was also romantically linked to Hollywood star Faye Dunaway told The Sun: 'I got a lot of attention from the secret police, the Stasi. I was followed all over the bloody place. 'I thought the only way to survive is to take the mickey. They had no sense of humour, so I would do stupid things. 'Too stupid' 'I knew my apartment was bugged, so I would go into the bedroom and have an extremely passionate orgy with a non-existent female. 'Knowing every word was being recorded I used two or three voices and then there'd be a knock on the door. 'Mein Herr, your gas is leaking'. 'They would search the flat and discover I had an invisible mistress.' Forsyth, who died yesterday morning after a short illness, was born in Ashford in Kent in 1938. His mum ran a dress shop and his dad was a furrier. He attended a private school nearby in Tonbridge and wanted to leave home aged 17 to become a bullfighter in Spain. Trailer for new adaptation of The Day of the Jackal starring Eddie Redmayne Instead Frederick had to do national service and became one of the youngest RAF fighter pilots aged 19. Frustrated that he wasn't getting to travel the globe as much as he'd like, he joined the Eastern Daily Press as a trainee reporter. From there he went to Reuters, where his ability to speak French saw him posted in Paris during an anti-de Gaulle campaign by a far-right paramilitary organisation called the OAS. He said: 'There definitely was an OAS trying to assassinate President de Gaulle and I was there covering it as a Reuters reporter in 1962 to '63. 'I thought to myself that they probably would fail because they were so penetrated by French counter intelligence that it was hardly possible for four of them to sit around a table.' From there he went to East Germany, where MI6 asked him to run errands. 7 Spy author Frederick talking to The Sun last year Credit: Arthur Edwards / The Sun 7 Former pilot Frederick in his RAF uniform aged 19 Credit: Arthur Edwards / The Sun He said: 'I was once picked up in Magdeburg by the Stasi and interrogated through the night. 'I was like the PG Wodehouse character Bertie Wooster. 'Eager to please, helpless, hopeless, hapless and therefore harmless. 'Having shouted at me all night, they took me down a long corridor to a door. 'I didn't know whether it was the execution chamber or what it could be. 'Turned out to be the car park. 'They were chucking me out. 'As I was getting in the car, I heard one of them say 'He's too stupid to be an agent'.' Frederick then covered the civil war between Biafra and Nigeria for the BBC but his contract was not renewed after six months. Every friend I had told me very, very clearly that I was absolutely insane. Frederick Forsyth He wanted to go back to tell the world what was going on because up to two million people died of starvation in the conflict. Finding himself unemployed at Christmas 1969, he set about writing The Day Of The Jackal. Freddie said: 'I was skint, out of a job and I thought I'll write a novel. 'Every friend I had told me very, very clearly that I was absolutely insane.' He turned out 350 pages in 35 days, not a word of which was changed on publication. Although he said he took the sex scene out because he didn't think he had written it well. The book proved to be a massive hit, with the publishers offering Frederick a then princely £75,000 for the rights forever. He regretted accepting the deal because the book sold 12million copies and was turned into two films and a ten-part Sky drama starring Eddie Redmayne. It probably would have earned him a million pounds in royalties. 7 Frederick at home in Herts in 1971 Credit: Getty 7 Eddie Redmayne in a modern adaptation of The Day of the Jackal Credit: Carnival Film & Television Limited There were plenty more novels including The Odessa File, The Dogs Of War and The Fourth Protocol. Frederick claimed his romantic life was untroubled even though he divorced his first wife Carole in 1989. Shortly afterwards he said: 'We have both been very determined indeed to keep it civilised.' Then, in 1994, he married one of his fans Sandy Molloy, who he was with until she died in October 2024. Frederick had to keep writing because he was swindled out of £2.2million by dodgy financial adviser Roger Levitt in 1990 and his final novel Revenge Of Odessa is due to be published later this year. 'Extraordinary life' In 1997 he was made a CBE for services to literature. His friend David Davis, the Conservative MP, paid a warm tribute, saying: 'Freddie believed in honour and patriotism and courage and directness and straightforwardness. 'We haven't got many authors like him and we will miss him greatly. 'James Bond was total fantasy but everything that Freddie wrote about was based in a real world.' The author, who died at home in Buckinghamshire, left behind two sons Stuart and Shane from his first marriage. His agent Jonathan Lloyd said: 'We mourn the passing of one of the world's greatest thriller writers. 'Only a few weeks ago I sat with him as we watched a new and moving documentary of his life, In My Own Words, to be released later this year on BBC One and was reminded of an extraordinary life, well lived. 'He will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, all of us at Curtis Brown and, of course, his millions of fans around the world. 'Though his books will, of course, live on forever.'
