Volkswagen recalls Polo and Taigo models bought in 2022 and 2024
Volkswagen Group South Africa has notified the National Consumer Commission (NCC) that it is recalling Polo and Taigo vehicles bought in 2022 and 2024.
The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 protects consumers from hazards and ensures their well-being and safety by governing product recalls. The NCC can order a recall if a product is deemed unsafe or poses a potential risk to the public.
What is wrong with the cars?
The cars are being recalled because of a faulty part in the gas generators of the front passenger airbag module.
'In the event of an accident with deployment of the front airbag, there may be a reduced protective effect by the front passenger airbag and an increased risk of injury to the passenger.
'Furthermore, the gas generator housing may burst, or components of the gas generator housing may come loose and cause serious or deadly injuries to vehicle occupants,' said the NCC.

How many cars are affected?
VW told NCC that there are 142 Polo and eight Taigo cars affected. 141 Polo cars were made available for sale nationally from 20 December 2022.
One Polo and eight Taigo cars were made available for sale from 29 January 2024.
Affected consumers are advised to take the following steps:
1. Deactivate the front passenger airbag.
2. Refrain from using the front passenger seat.
3. Submit vehicle to any VWSA-approved dealer for a check and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components.
The first recall of Polo
This is not the first recall of Polo models. Mid-May Polo Sedans, sold nationally from 2 April 2025, were part of a recall of other cars.
VW informed NCC that the latch plates for the rear seatbelt were produced with insufficient hardness. Therefore, in the event of powerful deceleration (accident or hard braking), 'there may be a reduced retention or protective effect and related increased risk of injury.'
There are 905 Polos with this issue. Those who purchased the car during the period must contact an approved Volkswagen dealer for a check and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components.

Volkswagen confirms specs and engine for new Tayron SUV in South Africa
Positioned between the Tiguan and Touareg, the Tayron will soon arrive in South Africa, with pre-orders for the Tiguan Allspace's replacement now open. Unveiled in South Africa at the 2025 Volkswagen Indaba, the local arm of the German automaker announced the Tayron will launch in our market in the second half of the year. The company also confirmed which trim lines will be available with the Tiguan Allspace's replacement. Though, at the time, we could only place bets on which engine options will be on offer. However, with the announcement that pre-orders for the Tayron are now open, the Wolfsburg brand has not only divulged more information surrounding the spec levels, but also confirmed what engine will power the local Tayron portfolio. 2025 Volkswagen Tayron SA lineup The local Volkswagen Tayron lineup will comprise three derivatives: Tayron (base), which is exclusively available with a five-seater layout, Life, and R-Line – the latter two models featuring seven seats. The entry-point to the range, base specification includes such items as 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and 18-inch Bologna alloy wheels. On top of these items, Life spec gains three-zone climate control, 10-colour ambient lighting, nine airbags, and illuminated VW emblems, front and rear. New Volkswagen Tayron now available for pre-order
Volkswagen South Africa announced on Thursday that its new Tayron is now available for pre-order. Set to replace the Tiguan Allspace, the Tayron slots in between the Tiguan and Touareg in the German brand's SUV line-up. It's designed to be a capable all-rounder, well-suited to the needs of space-hungry families. Measuring 4.79m in length, the Tayron is defined by a front end featuring narrow LED headlamps and an illuminated Volkswagen logo. The lower half of the bumper makes an equally strong visual statement, with large diagonally shaped side air intakes and a gloss-black, diamond-pattern radiator grille. At the rear, the Tayron stands out with another illuminated VW logo and a full-width LED light bar connecting the taillights. Local buyers can choose from three specification levels: Base, Life and the flagship R-Line. The five-seater Base model includes standard features such as eco LED headlights, park assist, blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert, a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, adaptive cruise control with front assist and lane keeping assist. Step up to the Tayron Life and you get additional features like three-zone automatic climate control, 10-colour ambient lighting, multifunctional driving experience control, App-Connect with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, light assist, nine airbags and the option of seven seats.
