Watch: Elephant in Kerala calmly pulls out SUV from riverbank, wins hearts online
Kerala
is going viral on social media this week– not for any accident or celebrity moment, but for a powerfully incredible scene by a riverbank. In Palakkad district, a white Toyota Fortuner got stuck in the soft, muddy bed of a shallow river.
But instead of a crane or tow truck, it was an elephant, guided by its mahout, that pulled the vehicle out.
This short but powerful moment has quickly gone viral, drawing attention not just to the elephant's strength but also to how traditional knowledge still plays a role in everyday life.
Reports suggest that the vehicle had driven onto the riverbank, likely misjudging how muddy the ground was. With three wheels stuck deep and no grip to move forward, efforts to push or pull it by hand didn't work.
As more people gathered around, so did the confusion about how the SUV would be rescued.
Soon, a mahout reached the spot with his elephant– a well-known domesticated tusker named Sankaranarayanan. A thick rope was tied to the front of the SUV, and on the mahout's signal, the elephant grabbed it with its trunk. With one calm and steady pull, the vehicle was pulled out of the mud and brought safely back onto solid ground.

The act lasted only a few moments, but it was powerful enough to grab the attention of millions.

The video was first shared on Instagram by user Said Alavikoya and quickly gained traction. Within hours, it was being widely shared across social media, with people reacting to the unusual sight with a mix of curiosity and admiration. Many praised the elephant's calm strength and the smooth coordination between the animal and its mahout.
While this scene may surprise many on social media, using elephants for tasks like lifting logs or working in tough rural areas is still common in parts of Kerala, especially in forest regions and during temple events.
The video is a reminder that even today, some communities still turn to traditional methods when modern tools don't work.
Reactions to the video have been mostly positive, with many appreciating the elephant's strength and calm nature. However, some viewers raised concerns about the ethical use of elephants for such tasks. Animal rights groups often remind people that even trained and domesticated elephants need to be treated with care and respect, and their well-being should always come first.

Delhi-Gurgaon eway set for its first major overhaul, work to start next month
Gurgaon: Work to recarpet and upgrade the 28km Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway — from Rao Tula Ram Marg in the capital to Kherki Daula in the city — will begin next month, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finalised the contractor for the Rs 160 crore project. The expressway will undergo its first major overhaul since opening in 2008. NHAI officials said on Wednesday that the letter of acceptance has been issued to the contractor, and machinery and manpower mobilisation will begin shortly. The tender for the project was floated in May this year. The project involves recarpeting of 10km of the carriageways in Delhi and 18km in Gurgaon, along with service lanes on both sides. Pavement layers will be reinforced, particularly near flyovers, underpasses and service roads, to handle heavier traffic load. "We have awarded the work and expect it to start next month. Although we have been maintaining the highway as part of routine annual maintenance, this will be a major overhaul focusing on strengthening and resurfacing, addressing engineering issues and improving road safety," an NHAI official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo The upgradation will be executed in phases over two years to minimise disruption. Key improvements include rectifying road geometry at accident-prone spots, upgrading lighting to at least 40 lux (intensity), and replacing metal crash barriers with reinforced concrete ones to reduce fatalities in collisions. Service roads in Narsingpur, notorious for flooding during rains, will be reconstructed using ready-mix concrete to eliminate frequent repairs. The recarpeting of service lanes aims to improve traffic flow during diversions. The project also includes improved signage and lane markings. Commuters welcomed the move but remain cautious about timely completion. "If done efficiently, this will be a huge relief. While traffic police issue challans to drivers of two-wheelers plying on the expressway, some sections of the service lanes are not even motorable. The service road from Hero Honda Chowk to Kherki Daula is not only narrow due to encroachment but is in dilapidated condition with regular sewage overflows," said Rajat Dewan, a South City-1 resident who commutes daily to Manesar. Separate parking area for VIP, police cars at airport
1 2 Kolkata: Bidhannagar police has introduced a designated free parking area for VIP and police vehicles near the old domestic terminal to prevent unauthorised parking in front of the main airport terminal. For several years, vehicles with beacons or govt identification plates were parked outside the terminal for extended periods while waiting for passengers, despite rules allowing only seven minutes of free parking in the area. The penalty for overstaying is Rs 500, but these vehicles are rarely fined. The problem increased after lane dividers with reflective strips were installed along the terminal frontage, from exit gates 1A/B to 2A/B, to direct vehicles into lanes for pick-up, drop-off, and through movement since the start of the week. TOI highlighted over the past two days how these VIP vehicles occupy the first lane, leading to traffic congestion. We are in talks with the airport authorities to install a Flight Information Display System (FIDS), which shows arrivals, departures, gates, delays, and other real-time flight details, next to the VIP parking lot so that the drivers know the exact time of the flight arrivals," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Interested in Investing? Cyprus Offers Many Options Cyprus Invest | Search ads Undo Cops said they were urging the drivers of these VIP cars to move towards the terminal building only after the flight arrived and the passengers collected the luggage so as not to crowd outside the terminal. "Our officers will guide these vehicles to the terminal and ensure they no longer clog the channels," said the officer. Parking space for special cases has also been arranged at the third tier of the underground parking lot. The airport authorities and cops had tried a similar measure two years back but even then it hadn't paid off. Before the metro construction, a separate VIP parking lane existed under the elevated road to the departure terminal. This was removed to accommodate the project. On Wednesday, TOI found VIP vehicles were still parked near the terminal gates. These included state govt cars with beacons, police vehicles, and those belonging to politicians and magistrates. Some police and airport staff also parked motorcycles in the departure area. Under airport rules, vehicles can stay on the premises free for a maximum of seven minutes, with only three minutes allowed directly in front of the terminal gates. Longer stays require the use of the official parking zones. A senior airport official said the matter was discussed in coordination meetings, but the practice continues. Transport department admits lack of clarity on old number plates
Pune: The state transport department on Wednesday admitted to not adequately publicising what to do with old registration plates, causing confusion among vehicle owners, as the HSRP deadline for pre-April 2019 vehicles approached. "After installing HSRP, vehicle owners need to retain the old number plate, but this requirement wasn't properly publicised. The department will now take steps to clarify this," state transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar told TOI. Fatimanagar resident Nitin Chane had an HSRP fitted to his two-wheeler at a Salunke Vihar Road centre. "I could see many old number plates kept in a heap. After HSRP fitment, I asked for the old number plate back, but officials refused, saying they'd retain and destroy it. However, when I insisted, they relented, and I took the plate back as I feared potential misuse," Chane said. "We are working as per instructions received. The old numbers can't be accessed by anyone. Once the service centre closes in the evening, the main gate is locked up. We have a guard dog too," the representative said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50!
