South Korea reports African swine fever case after four-month hiatus
SEOUL: (Bernama-Yonhap) -- South Korea on Wednesday (July 16) reported its first African swine fever (ASF) case in about four months, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The latest ASF case was found at a farm located in the inter-Korean border county of Paju in Gyeonggi Province, which raises some 2,500 pigs, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
It was the fourth such case this year, with the previous one occurring in the city of Yangju in March.
The government issued a 48-hour standstill order for pig farms and related facilities in the region, and is taking necessary measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including the culling of affected pigs.
ASF does not affect humans but is deadly to pigs. There is currently no vaccine or cure for the disease. - Bernama-Yonhap

TOKYO: (Bernama-Kyodo) The Japanese government discarded Covid-19 oral medicines believed to be worth around 240 billion yen (US$1.6 billion) in the fiscal year through March as they had passed their expiry dates, Kyodo News Agency reported, citing health ministry officials on Wednesday (July 16). While the exact purchase price remains unclear, the value was calculated in accordance with current prices. The amount is enough to treat some 2.5 million people. The government acquired the oral drugs at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and provided them free of charge to hospitals and clinics nationwide. But many of them were unused after Covid-19 was downgraded to the same category as seasonal influenza in May 2023, which required people to pay for Covid-19 treatment. Drugmakers had also started general distribution of Covid-19 medicine in Japan themselves. A Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare official said offering the drugs to other countries was considered but legally difficult. Among the two million doses of Pfizer Inc.'s nirmatrelvir and 1.6 million doses of Merck & Co.'s molnupiravir procured by the government, about 1.75 million doses of nirmatrelvir and some 780,000 doses of molnupiravir were disposed of, according to the ministry. The government also secured two million doses of Shionogi & Co.'s ensitrelvir but about 1.77 million of them are unused, the ministry said. New ASF outbreak hits pig farm in Tasek Gelugor, Penang
KEPALA BATAS: The Penang Department of Veterinary Services (JPVPP) has confirmed a new case of African Swine Fever (ASF) at a pig farm in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor, raising the total number of infected farms in the area to four. JPVPP director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab stated that lab tests confirmed the latest infection but assured the outbreak remains under control. 'JPVPP is actively conducting further investigations and collecting additional samples from the relevant farms. So far, the spread of the disease is under control, with only one more farm having tested positive,' she said. She added that farms in Kampung Selamat, Seberang Perai Selatan, and Barat Daya remain ASF-free, with no significant increase in infected pigs. The announcement was made during the state-level Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen's Day opening ceremony at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute. To date, 1,083 pigs have been culled at two infected farms, with carcasses buried on-site. Culling operations for the remaining two farms will begin soon. 'The culling process follows strict procedures on certified land. Disposal for the other farms will be on government-owned land in Seberang Perai Utara,' Saira Banu explained. She warned pig traders and farmers against sharing transport lorries to slaughterhouses to prevent cross-contamination. The total pig population across the four farms is estimated at 6,000. JPVPP director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said the confirmation was made based on lab test results conducted by the department but the ASF outbreak in the area remains under control. "JPVPP is actively conducting further investigations and collecting additional samples from the relevant farms. So far, the spread of the disease is under control, with only one more farm having tested positive. "Other farms in Kampung Selamat and the districts of Seberang Perai Selatan and Barat Daya are still free from ASF and there hasn't been a significant increase in the number of infected pigs," she told reporters at the state-level Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day opening ceremony today. The event held at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, here, was officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. Saira Banu said 1,083 pigs have been culled at two of the four infected farms, with all carcasses buried on the farmers' lands. Culling for the remaining two farms will begin tomorrow. Based on JPVPP inspections, many of the pigs have already died. "The culling process is being carried out according to the prescribed procedures on the farmers' lands, certified as suitable by JPVPP.
