Mazda CX-30 remains a chic and dependable crossover pick
That stems from the powerful emergence of the Chinese automotive industry as a disruptor that has become tough to beat by offering customers a great deal for less outlay and across most segments.
The monthly figures speak for themselves. Very soon we might see brands from China edging in on the turf of the most beloved local staples, such as Volkswagen and Toyota.
They have outpaced marques that were once regular features in the top half of the monthly new vehicle sales charts. That includes Mazda.
However, where proven reliability and longevity is concerned, legacy carmakers such as Mazda continue to have the upper-hand. While the oldest Chinese carmaker in South Africa is just shy of turning 18, a brand such as Mazda has been involved in Mzansi for decades.
It has proven itself to be a purveyor of durable cars and, in more recent times, offerings that sought to elevate its persona with sharper designs and build quality that some have likened to German standards.
A Mazda CX-30 recently arrived for evaluation, looking quite rakish in a shade of blue. The crossover was first launched in 2020 as a bridge between buyers who found the CX-3 too compact and the CX-5 too large.
Mazda is not one for radical changes during a product life cycle, so aside from subtle tweaks from trim and equipment standpoints, the CX-30 seen here is much the same as the model launched about five years ago.
That is a considerable length of time in modern motoring terms, but the sleek, curvaceous aesthetic appeal of the model remains as desirable as it was then.
Pricing ranges from R531,800 for the basic Active version while R579,400 gets you into the Dynamic grade. The Carbon Edition, with its dark accents, is R597,800 and the range-topping Individual we tested costs R641,900. Pricing includes a five-year/unlimited mileage warranty and service plan.
On the outside, the 18-inch, glossy black alloys are the biggest differentiation of the Individual versus its lesser siblings.
The cabin is distinguished by a delicious two-tone colour combination: toffee for the leatherette bolsters, suede-like upholstery for the seat inners and door panels. One is reminded where the comparisons to Teutonic cabin finishes originate from. Behind the wheel of a CX-30 materials are of an excellent standard, from the soft-touch fascia to the grip of the elegant three-spoke steering wheel. The doors of the Mazda are on the light side, but concerns about occupants safety are assuaged by the fitment of seven airbags and the credentials of a five-star EuroNCAP rating.
Some may lament the slightly dated look of the cabin, but traditionalists will enjoy the blend of analogue with digital. The instrument cluster, for example, has classic needles and gauges for the tachometer and fuel level, complemented by a central screen handling speed and other data.
Atop the fascia is a slim infotainment screen that blends appealingly, a nice break from the stark, oversized tablets that look as though they were stuck on as an afterthought.
Being the top tier expression of the CX-30 range, the standard equipment level is high and outfitted with amenities including a sunroof, Bose audio system and electrically-operated tailgate. Annoyingly, the navigation system requires an SD card, which was not present in our test unit. The vehicle's 295l boot is on the shallow side.
Road manners are of a respectable texture, with good marks for sound insulation and light but direct steering. There are some compromises where ride quality is concerned, attributed to the 18-inch alloys, in tandem with suspension tuning that is decidedly firm. Drive is to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic.
Where Mazda could be criticised for lagging behind is in the powertrain department. The CX-30 used a 2.0l, four-cylinder petrol engine which is naturally-aspirated. This is the 121kW/213Nm unit that has served in Mazda products for many years and has an industrial, appliance-like quality.
On one hand, the long-lasting potential and easy maintenance of such a simple, uncomplicated motor is a positive. On the other hand the performance boost and economy of adopting turbocharger technology is hard to argue with.
Rivals such as Toyota have found a satisfying middle ground with hybridisation. The CX-30 could certainly benefit from such progress. Average consumption over our week of testing was 8.5l/100km.
While it might not be at the forefront of technological innovation, the CX-30 remains a stylish and proven prospect from a brand with a sound reputation.

Whether these are physical (let's hope so) or capacitive (let's hope not) remains to be seen. Other standout interior details include a chunky new gear lever design with a small rectangular switchgear panel beside it, what appear to be cupholders placed in front of the side air vents and a second enclosed storage area above the cubby hole. The absence of a mechanical handbrake on the redesigned centre console suggests the fitment of an electronic parking brake. While the instrument cluster is lacking in detail, it's most likely that higher-spec Hilux models will feature a customisable digital display. The accompanying exterior design drawings reinforce the idea that the new Hilux is a thoroughly revised version of the eighth-generation model, with the doors and roof skin carried over. However, to freshen things up, Toyota has bolted on a new front end that includes an aggressive new bumper design and a pair of slim headlight clusters. There's also updated wheel arch cladding and new wraparound taillamps. Riding on Toyota's longstanding IMV ladder-frame chassis (if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?), the new Hilux is expected to continue with the proven 2.4 l and 2.8 l four-cylinder turbodiesel engines – the latter available with 48V mild-hybrid technology. We assume the workhorse models will offer the aged but reliable 2.0 l and 2.7 l VVTi petrol engines. The new Toyota Hilux is expected to make its global debut in November 2025 in Thailand.

Lesufi blames US tariffs on SA's Palestine stance, backs China to prop up Gauteng
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi elaborated on the state of the province and developments on the international front. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is bullish over the province's future, as he believes a new trade partnership will help absorb the looming impact of tariffs imposed by the United States (US). The premier was in the provincial legislature on Tuesday, fielding questions from opposition parties on the state of Gauteng. Lesufi touched on several issues, but explained at length his administration's position on the US, China and the Middle East. China to rescue Gauteng A 30% tariff on trade goods imposed by the US government is set to take effect this week, placing pressure on exporters across the country. Lesufi stated that he and his team were in China in June to conclude a memorandum of understanding with the province of Hunan. The agreement will see the two provinces form a skills and resources pipeline that would be mutually beneficial for the trade, infrastructure, manufacturing and agriculture industries of both provinces. He said representatives were finalising the 'operationalisation' of the deal. This will include the opening of a steel factory in Gauteng and various other urban initiatives. 'They have agreed to assist us to revitalise the inner-city of Johannesburg — the Chinese. They are also going to give us support in terms of rail and infrastructure,' explained Lesufi. 'They are also going to provide us with support in crime-combating initiatives in Gauteng and further give us support in agriculture and an agro-processing export programme for Gauteng exports into the Hunan–China market.' 'Never' abandon Palestine The idea that the tariffs were a punishment for South Africa's black economic empowerment policy has been suggested and denied from various quarters, with Lesufi putting forward another position. 'We are of the strong view that the decision taken by the US is nothing but the punishment for the posture to defend the people of Palestine. 'We will never abandon the people of Palestine, regardless of the intimidation tactics imposed on us as a country. 'The people of Palestine remain our ally, and we will defend them,' stated Lesufi. Lesufi says no 'bully' will dictate SA's trade He added that the new deal with the Chinese was conducted on a 'friendly basis', not through the perceived strong-arm tactics used by the US. 'The agreement we have reached with China on this trade confirms and affirms the decision taken to diversify our market and not rely on a bully to dictate to us where we can buy and where we can trade,' he said. However, the premier admitted that the consequences of the tariffs could be widespread and severe. 'We are looking forward to the negotiations that have been initiated to convince the US not to impose the 30% tariffs on our country, and create a bloodbath of unemployment in various sectors of society,' Lesufi concluded. E-toll gantries and debt E-tolls may no longer be a concern for motorists, but members of the legislature wished to know what would happen to the gantries dotting the province's freeways. ALSO READ: Gauteng pays R5.44 billion e-toll debt amid budget constraints Lesufi explained that provincial leadership had met with transport minister Barbara Creecy, who has taken ownership of the infrastructure. 'It was agreed that we leave all e-toll related matters with [Creecy] and the South African National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) board,' he said. 'While the province has proposed what the repurposing can entail, the gantries remain the assets of the national government, and we will await the board of Sanral and the engagement with the minister to finalise these matters.' The provincial government has paid almost R10 billion toward e-toll this year alone, and Lesufi defended the decision to scrap the tax and absorb the debt. 'When we took a decision to pay the principal amount, it also allowed Sanral to go to the market to raise money to improve roads across the country — including in the Western Cape. 'This decision to pay e-tolls has unlocked our road infrastructure and has allowed us to go to the next phase of building new highways in our province,' the premier said. In recent additional expenditure, Lesufi said the provincial government had released R2 billion on 30 June for the maintenance of roads across the province. Lesufi challenges DA Democratic Alliance members grilled Lesufi on the decay of arts and culture monuments, as well as contracts awarded to family members of Deputy President Paul Mashatile. DA's Jack Bloom highlighted a R49 million contract for fire prevention services given to Mashatile's sons, stating that allegations routinely went investigated. 'Alarm bells should ring when politicians live in a style way beyond their means while their friends and family get lucrative contracts,' said Bloom, as he held up a large photo of Mashatile's Cape Town mansion. Bloom was reprimanded for the prohibited use of props in the legislature, before Lesufi challenged the DA's claims. 'I act on evidence, not shouting and screaming. If the DA has evidence of corruption or any wrongdoing, I am asking them now to give it to me. 'If you want to dictate who controls me, there is only one formation that controls me, and that formation is the ANC,' the premier concluded.
