Chandigarh plants record 1.17 lakh trees

Indian Express06-07-2025
In one of the largest single-day environmental efforts in the city's history, Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria led a massive plantation campaign across Chandigarh to mark Van Mahotsav 2025. Against the target of planting 1,05,874 saplings at 253 identified sites, total 1,17,836 saplings were planted at 318 sites on Friday, transforming parks, road dividers, school campuses and residential areas into green zones.
Personally visiting 23 of these locations, Kataria planted a variety of ecologically significant and culturally symbolic saplings — from Crushia at Matka Chowk and Mango at Panjab University to Rudraksha at Raj Bhavan and Triveni (Peepal, Banyan, Neem) at Sukhna Choe Reserve Forest.
'This is not an event, it is a green movement — one that must echo through every household, every school, every institution of Chandigarh,' the Governor said, addressing participants during the drive. 'Van Mahotsav is not merely about planting trees; it is about planting hope, balance, and the future itself.'
Home Secretary Mandip Brar, DGP Pushpendra Kumar, MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests Saurabh Kumar, and other senior officials from the Chandigarh Administration also took part in the drive.
Calling upon citizens to treat the annual campaign as a collective environmental responsibility, Kataria invoked Munshi Premchand's words: 'Vrikshon ka arth hai jal, jal se roti aur roti se hi jeevan', stressing that human life depends on trees — for rain, rivers, fertile land and survival itself.
Asserting that 'our relationship with nature is not contractual but emotional,' Kataria said the sacred philosophy of Panchmahabhuta — Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Sky — finds a living connector in trees. Citing Guru Nanak Dev Ji's verse, 'Pavan Guru, Pani Pita, Mata Dharat Mahat', he urged people to respect the environment as one would honour a parent or teacher.
Highlighting sobering global data, the Governor pointed out that more than 15 billion trees are lost globally each year, equivalent to the destruction of 40 football fields of forest every second. 'These are not just numbers — they are urgent signals from a wounded planet. We must act now, and act with conviction,' he said.
Chandigarh, which already boasts 51.54% green cover, has now set a new benchmark in urban greening. The UT Administration plans to plant over five lakh saplings this year as part of long-term ecological restoration efforts.
Kataria also unveiled three key environmental initiatives on the occasion: the Greening Chandigarh Action Plan, the State Action Plan on Climate Change, and the Chandigarh Tree Map.
He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' for giving emotional depth to environmental action. 'Every tree planted in the name of one's mother is a living tribute — a symbol of love, protection, and nurturing,' the Governor said, urging the youth to carry the movement forward.
The day-long campaign saw enthusiastic participation from government officials, schoolchildren, volunteers and residents. Among the locations where Kataria planted saplings were:
• Matka Chowk: Crushia
• Patiala Ki Rao: Kapur
• Panjab University: Mango
• Shantikunj & Sector 18 Neighbourhood Park: Neeli Gulmohar
• Sector 22 Govt Model School: Shyam Tulsi and Amla (Herbal Garden)
• Sector 23: Gardenia
• Garden of Spring, Sector 53: Kachnaar
• CRPF 13 Battalion Camp: Tulsi
• GMCH-32 and Govt College of Education, Sector 20: Gulmohar
• CISF Sector 31: Guava
• Mango Belt, Sector 26: Biksa Orelana and Mango
• Sukhna Choe Reserve Forest: Triveni
• Govt Model School, Sector 26: Rudraksha (Taru Vatika)
• Punjab Raj Bhavan: Rudraksha

JEs turn watchdogs to take litterbugs to task in Chandigarh

1 2 Chandigarh: With the National Green Tribunal (NGT) breathing down its neck, the Chandigarh administration has rolled out a no-nonsense plan to tackle illegal garbage dumping across the city. In a decisive move, junior engineers (JEs) from both the municipal corporation (MC) and UT administration will now double up as sanitation enforcers — monitoring, identifying, and penalising offenders dumping waste in open, non-designated areas. This crackdown follows a stern NGT review meeting on Wednesday, where the UT chief secretary expressed serious concern over the unchecked spread of garbage. The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) had earlier flagged multiple hotspots of illegal dumping, prompting the administration to rope in engineering staff for frontline enforcement. "JEs will now be the eyes and ears on the ground," said an official. "They will patrol their designated areas and slap penalties on violators as per laid-down norms." To empower them, the administration is preparing to issue special challaning powers, turning engineers into eco-sentinels. Currently, sanitation inspectors handle this task, but limited manpower and infrastructure have hampered results. With 80-100 JEs now joining the mission, authorities expect a significant boost in enforcement and deterrence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The CPCC, which monitors solid and liquid waste management, acts as a watchdog and regularly reports to the NGT. Its latest findings have added urgency to the city's clean-up efforts, especially with Swachh Survekshan ratings taking a hit due to legacy waste issues. STP in Faidan village In another development, the MC is gearing up to set up a second sewage treatment plant (STP) in Faidan village. After awarding the tender for a 750 KLD STP, officials say the area's needs demand a second facility. "The engineering department of the MC has been asked to start the process of this second STP as soon as possible," sources said. The engineering wing of the MC recently allotted a tender for a 750 KLD capacity STP along Faidan and asked the company to complete the work in a period of six months. With the NGT set to review Chandigarh's waste management status in Sept, the administration is racing against time to clean up its act — literally and figuratively.

UT removes ineligible ration card holders from beneficiary list

Chandigarh: As part of the drive to weed out ineligible persons taking ration card benefits, the UT administration identified around 10,000 persons who are no longer eligible. The purging was done from the list of 3.5 lakh beneficiaries registered in the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Besides, 44,000 beneficiaries could not be verified and may be removed from the list. "The 10,000 beneficiaries who were found to be ineligible include deceased individuals, some who themselves claimed that they were no longer eligible, and others who did not meet set eligibility parameters," a UT official said. The 44,000 individuals could not be verified as they were not found at the address disclosed when the Food and Supply department official went to verify their credentials at the stated address. They did not contact the department during the e-KYC drive of ration card holders either. "The final list of such beneficiaries will be submitted to competent authorities after completion of the e-KYC drive, on the basis of which it will be decided to continue with benefits or remove them from the beneficiary list. These could also be people who may have migrated from the city to other parts of the country. Such people, if still meeting the eligibility criteria, will continue to get benefits in the state they have migrated to from the city," said the official. He added that the department would carry out an "electronic-know your customer" (e-KYC) exercise across the city. Under the drive, in addition to physical surveys, details of beneficiaries will be captured through a biometric-based hand-held electronic machine. The data will be validated through the Aadhaar server. The administration decided to undertake e-KYC of the ration card holders in the city on the directions of Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "This will help with targeted delivery of government benefits to eligible beneficiaries and reduce financial burden on the exchequer. The survey will also eliminate chances of 'dead' individuals and those who have already migrated from the city from getting benefits intended for city residents. The department has not undertaken a comprehensive validation drive for several years," said the official. The UT releases a monthly subsidy of around Rs 7 crore to ration card holders. The city follows direct beneficiary transfer (DBT) to Aadhaar-linked bank account of the beneficiary. "As UT follows DBT, regular contact between beneficiaries and UT officials is not there. In other states, where distribution of food grains is done through ration depots, there is regular contact. So a comprehensive validation and verification drive was a much needed exercise for the city to weed out ineligible beneficiaries," the official explained. After completion of the survey, ineligible beneficiaries will be removed from the ration card database. Around 10,000 beneficiaries are still pending. BOX: Centre shared list Recently, the central government shared a list of around 60,000 beneficiaries with the administration, who may not meet the eligibility criteria for the PDS system in the city. "The central government, in a pan-India exercise, used data on vehicle ownership, electricity usage, etc, to filter out ineligible beneficiaries. States have been asked to verify the same on the ground," said the official. MSID:: 122978899 413 |
