Exclusive: How Doja Cat's surprise show at Oasis came together during Outside Lands

Doja Cat stunned fans with a surprise announcement during her set on the first night of Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park: an exclusive afterparty at Oasis, the popular South of Market queer nightclub.
For 10 days leading up to the San Francisco music festival, club owner D'Arcy Drollinger had been quietly negotiating with the 'Paint the Town Red' singer's team to make the event happen — a well-guarded secret in a city where rumors move fast.
Then 29-year-old headliner made the announcement live on stage on Friday, Aug. 8, inviting the festival crowd for an intimate preview of her upcoming fifth album, 'Vie.' The result was a mad rush to the South of Market where fans queue up in a line that wrapped around the block.
Just weeks earlier, Drollinger — who also serves as San Francisco's inaugural drag laureate — announced Oasis would be closing its doors after more than a decade, citing unsustainable finances. He hopes the club, which has hosted major celebrities like Cher and Jane Fonda, can remain open at least through New Year's Eve to mark its 11th anniversary.
In an exlcusive interview with the Chronicle the following day, between his own appearance at the pop-up queer space Dolores' at Outside Lands, Drollinger noted Doja Cat's appearance is just another example of the unforgettable moments that make saying goodbye so difficult.
At least, Drollinger said, they're going out with a bang.
Q: How did you get Doja Cat to Oasis?
A: Her people approached us. She wanted to drop her three new songs in a queer venue, and Another Planet (Entertainment, producers of Outside Lands) suggested us. There was a lot of back and forth, and it was one of those things where we couldn't announce until after her show was done at Outside Lands.
We were all sort of bracing for it, and then she announced onstage, 'Come meet me at club Oasis and I'm going to drop my new music.'
Everyone raced to the club as fast as they could.
Q: How long were the discussions with her team?
A: We had about 10 days' notice. It was a very hard secret to keep because if it leaked, it was not going to happen.
Q: Were you at capacity at the club?
A: Yes, and there were hundreds of people who couldn't get in. We had people there who said it was such a joyous feeling in the room, and it was so intimate. She was so playful. (Fans) said it was more satisfying than seeing her at Outside Lands. I think the combination of it being a small venue and a queer venue allows for there to be more playfulness and sexiness.
She drove up in a red Ferrari and got out, which was fabulous, and she was so gracious. Not a single diva moment. She was so sweet to everybody, so kind and easy and effortless. It was really fun.
Because it was so contingent on her, there wasn't all the stuff that goes along with a celebrity. There were no riders and contracts. It was like, if she wants to do it, she's going to do it.
Q: Did Doja Cat's team pay a fee to use the club?
A: They did not. But we were able to charge cover, and we made good money at the door and the bar. It's fabulous for us. It helps us in our financial situation, and it got to be one of those amazing star moments like Cher, Lil Nas and Jane Fonda.
A: It'll definitely get us closer to January. Of course, there's these moments where we're like, 'How can we stop when so much magic is happening?' We have Big Freedia tonight (Saturday, Aug. 9) and Doja Cat killed it here last night.
It does make me crazy that we announced that we're closing and we have a runaway hit with ' Jurassiq Parq,' where we're sold out every night, and we've had two big stars come in. When I sit here at Outside Lands and I watch all of the amazing talent on the stage and I watch this audience, we're really fabulously blowing people's minds. I'm so proud of this, it's hard to not be able to continue showcasing this talent.
Q: What was the most magical moment of the night for you?
A: Her getting out of the car with a giant line of people and saying hello to everybody in the line and being so casual and generous with her time was pretty amazing. But I think that having her bend down and shake hands and hug the audience was really magical to watch. The room was filled with a lot of joy.
It was also cool to have a lot of people that had never been to Oasis that heard about it at the festival and ran over. I would say 50% of the people that were there last night had never been there.
I think it says a lot about Doja Cat that she wanted to drop her music in a queer club. It makes me proud to be able to be the club that could be small enough, yet big enough, to host something like this. It is a reminder that if you create something that is joyful, people want to be in the space.

Rebecca Black brings queer euphoria to Outside Lands with pulsing back-to-back sets

Rebecca Black performs with a set meant to contrast signs used by the infamous anti-gay, Westboro Baptist Church, on day three of Outside Lands in San Francisco on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025. Richard H. Grant/S.F. Chronicle Rebecca Black didn't just redeem 'Friday,' she proved she can get the party started any day of the week with her electric back-to-back sets on Outside Lands' final day. First, the hyperpop singer lit up the San Francisco festival's Sutro stage with an energetic late afternoon performance on Sunday, Aug. 10. Joined onstage by two backup dancers dressed in camouflage print tank tops and brown furry shorts, Black busted out full choreography during most of her songs, bringing an infectious energy that seemed to revive even the most exhausted three-day festivalgoers. The Mexican American singer rose to internet fame at the age of 13, with her viral song 'Friday' becoming the most disliked YouTube video in 2011. Though Black received intense online hate for the track, she pushed forward, continuing to release music in the years that followed. But only now has she been able to creep back to the mainstream, with flirty upbeat tunes like 'Worth It for the Feeling' and 'Doe Eyed' topping the playlists of queer Gen Zers. Richard H. Grant/S.F. Chronicle 'And they tried to call me a one-hit wonder,' she said with a wink while performing a mashup of 'Friday' and her more recent song 'Sugar Water Cyanide,' which was released last December and rapidly gained popularity online. Black, who was dressed in a ruffle-trimmed lime green-and-black striped mini dress, let her playful personality shine through onstage with her props. The queer artist's set featured a handful of picket signs intended to parody those frequently used by members of the Westboro Baptist Church and others to protest Pride events. Instead of the Bible verses and anti-gay rhetoric, however, hers displayed tongue-in-cheek nods to the LGBTQ+ community such as 'Str8? See Rebecca Black' and 'Homo sex is life.' Chronicle An hour after wrapping at Sutro, Black drew another overflowing crowd onto the Polo Field, where she closed out Dolores' with an equally captivating DJ set. Hundreds of fans spilled out of the open-air queer dance space, bathed in strobe lights and bouncing along to Black's remixes of party staples like Charli XCX 2016 hit 'Vroom Vroom' and LMFAO's 2011 club banger 'Party Rock Anthem.' Even when Irish folk singer Hozier hit the nearby Lands End stage for his headlining set 10 minutes before Black wrapped up, many fans stuck around to continue dancing with the 'TRUST!' singer. San Francisco fans have embraced Black over the years, offering the singer a safe and supportive space for her to flaunt her queer identity onstage. And it's clear that love hasn't waned. Black has consistently drawn enthusiastic crowds throughout the city since she performed Portola Festival 2024 on Pier 80, including for a DJ set at the Downtown First Thursdays block party in December and last month at Chase Center, where she opened for Katy Perry's Lifetimes Tour. Sophie Turner Slams Critics Who Claim She ‘Forgot' Her Two Kids With Ex Joe Jonas

For some reason, society always seems to forget that moms are people too. It's why we have phrases like 'working mom' and not 'working dad,' as if 'mom' is the most important title and everything else is just a sidenote in a woman's life. God forbid a mother has some carefree time without her kids every once in a while! Recently, Sophie Turner called out the haters who accused her of forgetting her two kids, who she shares with ex-husband Joe Jonas — and we love her for it! The Game of Thrones alum recently shared snaps of herself having fun with friends at an Oasis concert. She was dancing and singing, smiling with friends, and kissing a picture of one of the band members in the post on Instagram. 'Bucket hats & beers…. That'll do me,' she captioned the post on Instagram. More from SheKnows Ivanka Trump Reveals Son Joseph's Adrenaline-Pumping New Hobby in Summertime Snaps It's just some fun photos of a mom having a great time and a fun night out, but some people had a problem with it. 'lmfao i think she has forgotten that she has two kids,' one person commented on her post, prompting a response from Turner. 'ah I'm so sorry sometimes I forget some people can't think for themselves,' Turner replied. 'So…. Get this….There's this crazy thing called shared custody. Maybe, just maybe, they were with their dad that day.' (PEOPLE has a screenshot of the interaction HERE.) Period! A woman shouldn't have to defend herself for enjoying a night out, but we love the sassy way Turner handled this situation. Even if her kids were with a sitter instead of their dad, it would still be fine. Whether you are a celebrity or not, all moms deserve time with their friends. In the comments, more people defended Turner. 'Having kids and still being me – that's the dream. 🔥👏' one person wrote. Seriously, there's no law saying you have to give up everything you care about once you have a child. Not to mention, no one would say the same to a dad! Someone else shared, 'Me and my husband went to the concert and left our 8 year old with his God parents for the night…. we loved the concert…. he loved spending time with them… Parents are allowed lives…. go get yours.' Turner and the Jonas Brothers singer share daughters Delphine, 2, and Willa, 4. The duo were married in 2019 and split in Aug. 2023. Despite their initial dramatic breakup, with Turner suing Jonas for allegedly keeping their daughters in America unlawfully, the exes have finalized their divorce and seem to be in a better co-parenting place now. In July, an insider told PEOPLE that Turner and Jonas 'have gotten into a co-parenting rhythm that really works and they've figured out how to communicate.' 'There's a mutual respect now, and the girls are their priority. Joe and Sophie have hit a surprisingly peaceful groove,' the source continued, 'and they've maintained an amicable relationship from two continents, which isn't easy, but they've managed to pull it off.' In May, Jonas opened up about co-parenting in an interview with motivational speaker Jay Shetty in a TikTok video. 'I have a beautiful coparenting relationship that I'm really grateful for,' he said, per Daily Mail. 'Having an incredible mom, Sophie, for those girls is like a dream come true.' 'As young girls, looking up to great women is what I want for them,' he continued. 'I think what values I want for them are to be open-minded and have a big heart, be able to walk into any room and feel confidence and know that they can do literally anything they want.' Sophie Turner Responds to Mommy Shamer on Instagram

After years of criticism in the press, Sophie Turner isn't afraid to stand up for herself. Last week, Sophie called out a mommy shamer in her Instagram comments, defending herself from yet another unwarranted attack on her parenting. This all began on Aug. 4, when Sophie shared a carousel on Instagram of herself and friends enjoying a night out at an Oasis concert. 'Bucket hats & beers... That'll do me. Thank you @levis,' she captioned the post. Pretty harmless stuff, unless you're a troll looking for clout. One such troll decided to take to the comments, writing, 'lmfao I think she has forgotten that she has two kids.' If that sounds like a weird thing to assume based on one photo dump from an Oasis concert, that's because it is. And Sophie, who is mom to Willa, 5, and Delphine, 3, with her ex Joe Jonas, wasn't about to let it slide. 'Ah, I'm so sorry, sometimes I forget some people can't think for themselves,' she wrote in response. 'So... Get this... There's this crazy thing called shared custody. Maybe, just maybe, they were with their dad that day.' Sophie is no stranger to this line of criticism. After she and Joe announced their split in 2023, she was painted as an absent mother to their two young girls. Tabloids accused her of being a bad mother while Joe was photographed having lunch with their kids. 'Those were the worst few days of my life,' Sophie later told British Vogue, explaining that, at the time, she was on set in the UK filming Joan and unable to return to the states to see her girls. 'It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother—mum guilt is so real!' After a contentious custody battle, Sophie and Joe were able to work out a joint custody agreement, and the two appear to be on good terms.
