ANI New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India has introduced major reforms in the nuclear power sector and opened the doors in this segment to the private sector as the country aims to move towards energy independence.Addressing the nation on Independence Day, the prime minister said work is underway on 10 new nuclear reactors as India is moving to increase nuclear power generation capacity by over tenfold by 2047.
"Keeping in mind the future of energy, Bharat is also undertaking major initiatives in nuclear energy," he said. To have an active partnership with the private sector towards achieving this goal, the FY26 Union budget had proposed to bring amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act.The two Acts were introduced in the context of a state-owned nuclear thrust. The idea now is to encourage private sector participation as the clean energy requirement is set to rise in line with India's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
"We are dependent on many countries for our needs for petrol, diesel and gas... It is important to make the country 'atmanirbhar' in energy," he said.The prime minister stressed the importance of energy independence, saying this will be done for the bright future of youth and for the welfare of farmers. "Reform is a continuous process. As time progresses and situation arises, we need to keep reforming," Modi said.While the world debates global warming, India has achieved its target of meeting 50% of its energy needs from clean sources in 2025, five years ahead of timeline. The country's solar power capacity has increased 30 times in 11 years, he added. India is making new dams so that hydro power can be developed and we get clean energy, and investing in green hydrogen mission.

He asked how the Centre concluded on the number of foreign nationals entering India illegally, when there has been no Census since 2011. 'It has created a tone of terror in the country, it has created major insecurity, and when you sort of view it together with the ongoing SIR, the backdoor NRC, the ongoing so-called police verification drive, the MHA circular, so it creates before us the danger of a huge social division and the creation of a permanent category of disenfranchised people,' he said.

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Karnataka Congress leader BK Hariprasad on Saturday hit back, calling the right-wing group 'Indian Taliban' and accusing it of disturbing peace in the country.'They (RSS) are trying to disturb peace in the country. I will only equate RSS with Taliban, they are Indian Taliban and PM is appreciating them from Red Fort,' Hariprasad told news agency The former Rajya Sabha MP also raised questions over the organisation's legal status and funding. 'Was there any 'Sanghi' who participated in the freedom struggle? The man who spoke from the Red Fort yesterday... It's a shame that RSS is not a registered organisation. We don't know where they get funds. Any NGO that wants to work in the country should register, as per the Constitution,' he went on to allege that the BJP and RSS were 'masters of twisting history' and accused them of attempting to rewrite the narrative of Partition. His remark was in reference to an NCERT module that holds Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Congress, and then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for the partition. Jinnah and Savarkar were of the opinion that both religions need a separate state. Delhi Police commissioner sets vision for self-reliance, public trust on 79th Independence Day
NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh on Saturday outlined a roadmap for the force, in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 79th Independence Day speech. He highlighted three points to be implemented this year: self-reliance, technological aid, and healthy competition within the police force. The CP has directed Delhi Police units to come up with a proposal to make the force self-reliant within 15 days. The aim is to make Delhi Police independent of commandos, bomb disposal squads, and wireless sets. 'Although the Delhi Police has always been making the best use of technology and we are way ahead on this front, there is still a need to go further. Whether it is a matter of surveillance systems, preventing cyber crime, anti-drone technology, the ability to fight terrorists, the use of technology is required in every field,' Singh said. The CP has directed Delhi Police units dealing in technology-related matters to form committees and groups to conduct necessary studies and come up with proposals in a month.
