AFP: Achraf Hakimi Stakes His Claim as Strong Ballon d'Or Contender

Morocco Worlda day ago
Rabat — While much of the spotlight at Paris Saint-Germain falls on Ousmane Dembélé, Moroccan full-back Achraf Hakimi has been quietly making a compelling case for himself as a serious contender for this year's Ballon d'Or.
AFP released a recent report extolling the Moroccan international, saying he has strengthened his bid with standout performances throughout the season, including a strong showing at the Club World Cup.
The prestigious award, which will be presented on September 22, has rarely gone to a defender — and never to a full-back. At the start of the season, Hakimi's name was far from any shortlist of likely winners.
Yet week after week, the 26-year-old has impressed with remarkable consistency, outshining even his more celebrated teammate Dembélé, who himself has enjoyed a prolific, goal-filled campaign.
Hakimi has embodied the qualities of the modern full-back: blistering pace, relentless runs up and down the flank, pinpoint passing and crossing, and sharp tactical awareness. His exceptional fitness — which he credits to both natural ability and meticulous preparation — has also been key.
'It's something God gave me — this cardio power for sustained effort,' he told reporters in May. 'I also have a personal trainer and nutritionist, and the coach has managed my playing time well so I can always stay in top shape.'
This season has also seen Hakimi tactically, evolve, cutting inside more often to combine with teammates or switch play across the field — a reflection of his ability to bring coach Luis Enrique's vision to life.
'Luis Enrique has taken my game to a level I didn't think possible,' Hakimi admitted. 'He helped me become a more complete player.'
Typically reserved with the media, the Moroccan defender nevertheless acknowledged the personal and professional growth he has experienced this year. 'I'm very happy with my season, one of my best. I've grown both as a footballer and as a person. I feel more confident, more mature, and more experienced,' he said.
Even his coach has heaped praise on him, saying: 'I've never seen a better right-back — he has enormous potential and still room to grow.' Asked about the Ballon d'Or, Luis Enrique mentioned Dembélé first but quickly added Hakimi's name to the conversation.
Statistically, Hakimi's contributions speak volumes: 11 goals and 14 assists in 52 matches. Despite also competing at the Paris Olympics, he has finished the season strongly, already netting twice at the Club World Cup.
To crown his extraordinary campaign, Hakimi won the Marc-Vivien Foé Prize, awarded by RFI and France 24 to the best African player in Ligue 1, chosen by a panel of 100 jurors.
In the shadow of PSG's star-studded lineup, Hakimi has emerged as one of the club's most indispensable players — and, a legitimate Ballon d'Or contender. Tags: Achraf HakimiAtlas Lion Achraf Hakimihakimi ballon d'orPSG Hakimi

Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund: Preview & Score Prediction

Real Madrid will face Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup today in what promises to be a tightly contested clash at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Kick-off is at 9 p.m. Moroccan time (GMT+1), and fans can catch the action live for free on the DAZN website and app. Kylian Mbappé, who made his Club World Cup debut in the last round with a brief 22-minute appearance, could be in line for a starting role. Real manager Xabi Alonso must decide whether to start the Frenchman or continue with in-form striker Gonzalo Garcia, who has scored three goals in four appearances at the tournament. Dani Carvajal and Éder Militão are back in the squad after recovering from injury, but the Spanish coach may be reluctant to disrupt a winning formula, particularly after the narrow 1–0 victory over Juventus in the Round of 16. Madrid arrive in the quarter-finals on the back of a solid campaign so far. They topped their group with a 1–1 draw against Al Hilal, followed by victories over Pachuca and RB Salzburg. The knockout win over Juventus was less flamboyant but underlined Madrid's ability to manage games with control and efficiency. Dortmund, meanwhile, have taken the scenic route. A goalless draw against Fluminense opened their tournament before a dramatic 4–3 win over Mamelodi Sundowns and a narrow 1–0 win against Ulsan Hyundai sealed top spot in their group. They were tested again in the last 16, edging past Mexican side Monterrey 2–1. Key to Dortmund's hopes is striker Serhou Guirassy, who has been in prolific form, including a brace in the last round. Behind him, Jobe Bellingham and Julian Brandt provide creativity, while manager Niko Kovač has brought a disciplined structure to a side that continues to grow in confidence. Predicted Lineups: Real Madrid (3-5-2): Courtois – Rüdiger, Tchouaméni, Huijsen – Alexander-Arnold, Güler, Valverde, Bellingham, Fran García – Gonzalo García , Vinícius Jr Dortmund (3-4-2-1) Kobel – Süle, Anton, Bensebaini – Ryerson, Nmecha, Gross, Svensson – Brandt, Adeyemi – Guirassy. Score Prediction: Real Madrid, with their depth, experience and unbeaten form under Alonso, will enter the match as favourites. However, Dortmund's attacking intent and underdog spirit give them every chance of producing an upset. With a place in the semi-finals at stake, both sides are expected to approach the tie with caution – but it may take a flash of brilliance, or a moment of composure, to settle the outcome. French Magazine Hails Morocco's Achraf Hakimi as Serious Contender for Ballon d'Or

Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi, right-back for PSG, is today establishing himself as one of the most complete and influential players, which rightfully places him among the favorites for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, writes the French specialist magazine Onze Mondial. "What if the best player in the world were a right-back?" wonders the magazine in a glowing profile dedicated to the captain of the Atlas Lions in its July edition, noting that since his arrival in Paris, Hakimi has continually pushed the limits of his position, combining explosiveness, tactical discipline, and leadership. Much more than just a full-back, Hakimi has become a key player capable of influencing the game in every area of the pitch, it continues, noting that at just 25 years old, the Moroccan international has delivered top-level performances throughout a season marked by numerous challenges, placing him legitimately among the top contenders for the Ballon d'Or. "His versatility is one of his greatest strengths. His tactical adaptability reflects his football intelligence and maturity — essential qualities at the highest level," it highlights. Physically, the article notes, Hakimi impresses with his exceptional stamina, his ability to break through opposing defenses, and his precision in decisive areas, making him a constant threat to his opponents.
