Air India Denies Allegations Of Forcing AI 171 Crash Victims' Families To Disclose Financial Dependency
"Air India categorically rejects these allegations and refutes them as both unsubstantiated and inaccurate," the Tata Group airline said in a statement. The airline clarified that a questionnaire circulated among certain passengers was intended solely to verify familial relationships, ensuring the rightful distribution of interim payments.
'Understandably, there are some formal processes that must be followed, but we are giving families all the time and flexibility they need. We want to support however we can,' Air India said in a statement.
"In order to facilitate payments, Air India has sought basic information to establish family relationships to ensure that the advance payments are received by those entitled to them. Family members have been issued with a questionnaire to allow Air India to gather the information required to process compensation payments. This can be submitted in person at our Facilitation Centre at the Taj Skyline hotel in Ahmedabad, or by e-mail, and families have been given time and flexibility to complete these. Air India has certainly not made any unsolicited visits to families' homes," Air India said.
Air India executives said that an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh has been paid to 47 families, while interim compensation for another 55 families is in process and will be disbursed soon.
UK-based law firm Stewarts, which is representing over 40 bereaved families, has alleged that Air India has been 'coercing' families into submitting legally significant financial disclosures before receiving advance compensation.
"This tactic has deeply distressed families already dealing with an immense loss," the firm said.
The allegations come weeks after the June 12 disaster, in which 241 people on board and many on the ground died when the plane crashed into a medical college hostel seconds after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport.
Peter Neenan, an aviation lawyer and partner at UK law firm Stewarts, has represented families in a number of large airline disasters around the world, including the high-profile MH17 and MH370 crashes.
He claimed the airline's treatment of grief-stricken families could save it at least £100m by under-compensating families. 'This is the real horror of what they're potentially looking to do,' he said, calling for an investigation into the airline's behaviour.
Neenan said the families were not given any warning, legal advice, or a copy of the documents. Some families have told him that Air India officials went round to their homes and asked why they had not yet completed the forms, he added.
Neenan claimed families were falsely told they would not receive any payments unless they completed the forms, even though airlines are required under international law to make immediate advance payments to families entitled to compensation. Families are not required to do anything more than provide proof of identity and sign a receipt.

Mastermind of Rs 46-cr paddy scam held in Chhattarpur
Jabalpur : The absconding district manager of the MP State Civil Supplies Corporation (MPSCSC), Dilip Kirar, alleged mastermind of a multi-crore paddy procurement scam, has been arrested from Chhattarpur district. Kirar had been on the run for months and carried a reward of Rs 74,000 on his head. In what investigators describe as a scam reminiscent of Bihar's infamous fodder fraud, Kirar is among 74 people booked in connection with a massive racket involving the fake procurement and transportation of paddy in Jabalpur district. The case, uncovered earlier this year, led to FIRs being filed across 11 police stations. The FIRs by the administration implicated 74 individuals. Among those charged were 17 millers, 13 employees, including the in-charge district manager of MPSCSC, and 44 employees from the society and procurement centre. The scam can be understood from the facts that instances such as transporting hundreds of quintals of paddy in cars and other light motor vehicles, even the paddy which was never actually procured, were also shown to be transported during the investigation by the administration. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Open NRI Account in 4 hours HSBC Undo MP State Civil Supplies Corporation is the agency which procures paddy for the govt from farmers. This paddy is then milled, and rice is distributed through PDS. For milling of paddy, it is sent to millers across districts. Sources said that complaints were received that paddy lifted by millers for inter-district milling was being sold to local brokers. To investigate this, a four-member committee was formed under the chairmanship of Additional Collector Rural Nathuram Gond. The committee found that according to the MPSCSC portal, 324 DOs were issued for lifting rice. Each DO contained 433 quintals of rice, amounting to approximately 14,000 metric tons. The rice was supplied in 614 trips by vehicles. Information regarding the registration of these vehicles was sought from the millers, MPSCSC, and the society and procurement centre. During the investigation, the committee gathered information from NHAI about the toll tax exits of these vehicles. NHAI informed the committee that 571 trips with the mentioned registrations exited the toll tax, of which 307 trips involved cars or vehicles with very low loading capacity. Additionally, the registration numbers were found to be fake. Thus, a scam involving nearly 13,000 metric tons of rice lifted for milling was uncovered, valued at approximately Rs 30 crores. Furthermore, it was found that 7,200 metric tons of rice were falsely recorded as purchased on the online portal, although no actual purchase took place. This resulted in a scam of approximately Rs 16 crore through fake rice purchases, added sources. A certain amount of paddy was not only procured on paper, but that imaginary paddy was even shown to be packed, loaded, and transported to other districts for milling.

Uttarakhand CM Dhami orders crackdown against misuse of government welfare schemes
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], July 5 (ANI): In a move to curb the misuse of public welfare schemes, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday directed authorities to take stringent action against those fraudulently availing benefits. According to the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, two separate cases have been registered at Kotwali Nagar and Thana Rajpur in Dehradun. The crackdown began after the District Supply Officer and the Ayushman Department submitted complaints to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun. The complaints revealed that ration cards--intended only for individuals with an annual income below Rs 5 lakh--were being obtained by ineligible persons using fake documents. A subsequent investigation by the Supply Department confirmed that many such ration cards were indeed fraudulent. These were then used to create Ayushman health cards, allowing individuals to access government-funded healthcare services improperly. Acting swiftly, the police have launched detailed investigations into both FIRs. Authorities are in the process of identifying all individuals who secured benefits using forged documents, with Chief Minister Dhami reiterating that no one found guilty will be spared. Earlier in the day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Dhami flagged off the first group of pilgrims for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Tanakpur, marking the official commencement of the sacred journey. The group of devotees arrived in Tanakpur on Friday night and was welcomed by the Chief Minister at the Tourist Rest House (TRC). He personally interacted with the pilgrims before sending them off with best wishes. While speaking to ANI, CM Dhami said, 'The group for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has moved forward from its main stop, Tanakpur. The group of devotees arrived here last night... All arrangements have been made to ensure the safety of the pilgrims, a smooth journey, and no inconveniences.' Highlighting the challenges of the yatra, CM Dhami stated that the route remains vulnerable to landslides and harsh weather conditions, but the state government and associated corporations have ensured that all necessary support is in place. 'This is an extremely challenging journey, with persistent weather conditions and routes prone to landslides, but despite that, all facilities have been provided by our state corporation... The atmosphere is very enthusiastic. All the pilgrims are full of zeal... I wish everyone a successful journey,' the CM added. On June 20, after a five-year gap, the revered Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Sikkim recommenced with the ceremonial flagging off of the first batch of pilgrims by Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur from the Nathula Pass. The batch comprises 33 pilgrims, accompanied by two nodal officers and one doctor from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), making a total of 36 members. The resumption of this spiritual journey marks a significant moment of international cooperation and cultural continuity between India and China. (ANI)
