Penang ferry terminal to get seaview deck, commercial spaces in revitalisation effort

PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the revitalisation aims to modernise the terminal with an attractive design to improve visitor comfort and satisfaction.
Advertisement 'This will boost operational productivity,' Yeoh said in a statement. He added that the commercial spaces will feature a food and beverage hub and a garden bridge, alongside other attractions to draw more tourists. The PRTU upgrade is part of broader efforts to improve ferry operations, Yeoh noted. In addition, he said the extension of the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) now enables Oasis-class cruise ships to dock simultaneously, accommodating up to 12,000 passengers at a time. 'SPCT has been developed as a regional cruise ship hub, and projects around the terminal are being prioritised to complement these upgrades and attract more cruise ships to Penang,' he said. Yeoh also announced plans to collaborate with Printhero to establish a ferry museum showcasing Penang's iconic ferries, which once served as a crucial transportation link between Seberang Perai and the island. 'The conservation project aims to preserve the state's maritime heritage while offering visitors a chance to explore the history of water transportation in Malaysia. The old ferry, which carries countless memories, will be revived as a historical tourism attraction,' he said. Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook visited the PPC and reviewed key projects, including the North Butterworth Container Terminal Expansion Master Plan. According to Yeoh, the expansion involves reclamation work over 322.83 hectares and includes plans for a major petroleum hub in the northern region called the Northern Petroleum Terminal (NPT). Italy's Mount Vesuvius closed to tourists as wildfire rages
ROME: Italian firefighters on Sunday tackled a wildfire on the flanks of Mount Vesuvius, with all hiking routes up the volcano near Naples closed to tourists. The national fire service said it had 12 teams on the ground and six Canadair planes fighting the blaze, which has torn through the national park in southern Italy since Friday. Reinforcement firefighters were on their way from other regions and the onsite teams were using drones to better monitor the spread of the fire, the service said on Telegram. 'For safety reasons and... to facilitate firefighting and cleanup operations in the affected areas, all activities along the Vesuvius National Park trail network are suspended until further notice,' the park said in a statement Saturday. Nearly 620,000 people visited the volcano's crater in 2024, according to the park. The smoke from the fire could be seen from the Pompeii archeological site, which however remained open to tourists. Aseanta launches tourism awards

'The first is the 39th Aseanta Tourism Awards, and the second is the Discover Asean microsite by AirAsia Move,' said Aseanta President Eddy Krismeidi at the launch event held at the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta. Advertisement Eddy said the two initiatives not only reflect Aseanta's response to current tourism challenges but also its readiness to seize future opportunities. 'These initiatives reflect our determination to recover, innovate, and thrive,' he said. The Aseanta Tourism Awards, he explained, have been held for 39 editions and have long served as a platform to recognise and honour the best in Asean tourism – from community-based initiatives to large-scale innovations in marketing, sustainability, and excellence in tourism services. Registration for the Aseanta Tourism Awards is now open and will close on Oct 31,2025, with the winners to be officially announced at the Asean Tourism Forum 2026 in the Philippines. The second initiative presented at the event was the launch of the Discover Asean microsite, a digital travel booking platform from AirAsia Move, introduced by Aseanta in collaboration with AirAsia. Advertisement 'This microsite curates essential and inspiring content, from cuisine, culture, and attractive destinations to verified immigration links and the latest travel information,' he said. The application, he added, integrates tourism services that travelers need and want while also enabling easy access to flights and hotel rooms. 'In this way, intra-Asean travel becomes more intuitive, informative, and inspiring,' Eddy said. Meanwhile, Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa expressed the government's appreciation for Aseanta's efforts in realising the two initiatives. SBST programme set to modernise KK bus services

The initiative will introduce air-conditioned, efficient bus services aimed at enhancing mobility and convenience for both residents and visitors. Advertisement Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe ( pic ) said the programme is a timely step towards providing reliable, safe and comfortable public transport in Kota Kinabalu. He said the SBST would help reduce traffic congestion, promote sustainable urban mobility and meet the growing demand for better transport options. As the Coordinating Minister for Public Transport in the City, Phoong has been working with local leaders and agencies to refurbish bus stops, especially in high-traffic areas such as the airport and hospitals. The new system will feature eight main routes, 155 bus stops, electronic ticketing, onboard GPS tracking and fixed schedules, with KK Sentral as the central hub.
