Small business owner puts American-made products to test
Ramon van Meer, the owner of Austin, Texas-based Afina, which makes filtered shower heads, listed his products as either American-made or Asian-made, costing either $239 or $129, respectively. Van Meer found that out of the more than 25,000 website visitors, only 24 shoppers added the American-made product to their carts, but they did not buy it at all.
Van Meer also found that 3,500 customers added the cheaper, Asian-made shower head to their cart, and more than 600 of them were sold.
US cuts 'de minimis' tariff on low-value packages from China
Van Meer joined 'NewsNation Now' on Wednesday and said the reason he wanted to experiment is that he and other small businesses are affected by tariff increases. When he saw the tariff increase jump to 50%, he wondered how he would be able to find manufacturers in the U.S.
'I wondered if people really were willing to pay that extra premium in order for me to even have a business,' Van Meer said.
He said from the experiment, he was surprised and not surprised because he believes shoppers will favor good deals and want to pay as little as possible.
'I was not expecting that zero people would opt in for the made in the U.S.A. version,' Van Meer said. He added that in general, his American-made inventory doesn't sell much at all.
Inflation cooled again last month as grocery and gas prices fell
Van Meer said there are currently no factories in the country that make the specialty shower heads his company has, and that is what is causing a higher price difference. He said that after seeing how his experiment played out, he believes there is no option to find a solution in the U.S.
'Because the price difference was significant, I don't blame them either,' Van Meer said. 'I also think a lot of consumers understand that just because it's made in a different country doesn't mean it's less quality.'
Van Meer said if everyone knew that some things are the same product and quality, business owners will opt in for what is more cost-efficient.

NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's financial disclosure filings filled with discrepancies
Socialist NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has scored nearly $10 million in public matching funds for his campaign, despite having serious discrepancies in his mandatory financial disclosure filings, The Post has learned. Mamdani, the frontrunner heading into November's general election, claimed in a recent filing to the city's Conflicts of Interest Board reporting his finances for last year that he has owned vacant land in Jinja, Uganda, valued at $100,000 to $250,000 since March 14, 2016, records show. Mamdani, who earns $131,000 annually as a Queens-based state assemblyman, also noted owning interest in two stocks valued at a combined $5,000 to $55,000 – MiTec and PBC – and having a retirement plan worth another $1,000 to $5,000. Advertisement 3 Mamdani received his matching funds despite the apparent discrepancy in his financial disclosure forms. Janet Mayer/ However, in annual financial disclosure statements for 2020 through 2024 filed with the state Legislative Ethics Commission, Mamdani, 33, said he took full ownership of the Uganda site four years earlier – in 2012. He also didn't list any stocks, instead claiming the only the securities he owned were valued at less than $2,000 from a retirement plan with the social-justice organization Chhaya where he worked in 2019. Advertisement The revelation that Mamdani's state filings contradict his city filings come while two of his top competitors, Mayor Eric Adams and ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, have been denied millions of dollars in matching funds by the city's Campaign Finance Board after being flagged for various violations. 'Every time you scratch the surface with this guy, more red flags emerge,' said defense lawyer Jim Walden, who is running for mayor as an Independent. 'Here, the obvious concern is that he is understating his wealth. He should come clean. If he can't be honest, add that to the growing list of disqualifiers.' A rep for the Campaign Finance Board declined comment. Advertisement Lisa Partelow Reid, executive director of the state Legislative Ethics Commission, said elected officials who knowingly make false statements to the commission could face fines of up to $40,000. If amendments are needed 'the assumption' typically is 'an inadvertent error' occurred, she said. 3 Mayor Adams was not given matching funds for his reelection campaign. Derek French/SOPA Images/Shutterstock There are no records of Mamdani amending his filings. Reid declined to discuss Mamdani repeating the same information on his stocks and land ownership in five straight annual state filings – but then providing different information in his COIB filing. Advertisement 3 Heavy security and phone jammers marked a recent three-day celebration at Mamdani's Ugandan compound. New York Post COIB Executive Director Carolyn Miller deferred questions about matching funds to the Campaign Finance Board but said 'filers regularly and routinely amend their annual disclosure reports to resolve discrepancies.' Hank Sheinkopf, a longtime Democratic political consultant, questioned whether the state and city entities — which are designed to be independent and apolitical — are ignoring Mamdani's discrepancies because they're worried about being accused of Islamophobia. 'It's hypocritical at best,' he said. Mamdani did not return messages. Additional reporting by Gabrielle Fahmy

Dem Definition of "Democracy"
Democrats have a very selective definition of 'democracy' I'm Tomi Lahren, more next. Whether it's Texas redrawing its map in a far less egregious way than Blue states have redrawn theirs, or President Trump federalizing DC to make it safer, the buzzword again this week is 'Democracy' and how Republicans and Donald Trump are a threat to it. But if you're curious as to how DEMOCRATS define 'Democracy' let me give you a refresher. Democrats have told us 'democracy' means *locking healthy people in their homes and shutting down their businesses due to COVID *attempting, numerous times, to jail their top political opponent *propping up a president with severe cognitive decline *opening the borders *keeping illegal alien gang bangers in the US and roaming the streets And now they've made their way to… *allowing our cities to be lawless and innocent people to be targeted All that is what Democrats call 'democracy!' Newsom is OBSESSED
Governor Gavin Newsom vows to redraw California congressional maps. I'm Tomi Lahren, more next. Gavin Newsom spends far more time tweeting than he does governing his failed state. All week he's been on a caps lock rampage trying to bait President Trump into a social media feud. All this while our president is preparing to help end the war between Russia and Ukraine, by the way. After failing to prevent Texas from moving forward with its own plans, Gavin announced plans to call a special election in the first week of November to have California voters decide if they want to move forward with redistricting. This would be quite the feat since lawmakers only have till August 22 to get this measure on the ballot. If they clear ALL those hurdles, they could potentially weed out 5 Republican seats from their map. It's rather unlikely this goes the distance but it's further proof of how OBSESSED Gavin Newsom is with attention, drama, and of course his own political spotlight. Meantime his state is still a flopping disaster. I'm Tomi Lahren and you can watch my show 'Tomi Lahren is Fearless' at Learn more about your ad choices. Visit
