Marlins prevent late Astros rally to avoid sweep

Reuters3 days ago
August 7 - Xavier Edwards connected on four hits, and Heriberto Hernandez homered and drove in two runs as the host Miami Marlins defeated the Houston Astros 6-4 on Wednesday.
The Astros, who failed to secure what would've been a three-game sweep, were led by Christian Walker, who slugged a two-run homer.
Miami played an exceptional game as the Marlins produced 14 hits, stole four bases, made no errors and had several fielding gems.
Perhaps the biggest play came with the bases loaded in the eighth inning when reliever Calvin Faucher made a backhand stab of a slow roller and threw out Walker on a close call at the plate.
Janson Junk (6-2) earned the win, going five innings and allowing five hits, two walks and three runs.
Lake Bachar pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second career save.
Spencer Arrighetti (1-2) took the loss, allowing 11 hits, one walk and five runs in 3 2/3 innings. It was his first appearance since April 5.
Houston took a 2-0 lead in the first as former Marlin Jesus Sanchez doubled and scored on Walker's 417-foot bomb to left-center. That shot had a 113-mph exit velocity.
Miami grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first, putting together a rally that included six singles. Liam Hicks, Otto Lopez and Hernandez got the RBIs.
The Marlins extended their lead to 4-2 in the second as Edwards doubled, advanced on Kyle Stowers' single and scored on Agustin Ramirez's sacrifice fly.
Miami made it 5-2 in the third on Hernandez's homer, which went 391 feet and got just over the glove of Sanchez in left field.
Houston cut its deficit to 5-3 in the fifth as Mauricio Dubon and Carlos Correa smashed two-out doubles. Sanchez nearly got Houston another run but his 106-mph grounder was fielded on a slick play by Edwards at second.
Graham Pauley led off the bottom of the fifth with a homer, extending Miami's lead to 6-3.
Houston kept coming in the sixth as Walker singled and scored on Victor Caratini's double. That made it 6-4.
But then came Houston's base-loaded rally in the eighth. After Faucher threw Walker out at the plate, Houston nearly tied the score on Dubon's blooper into short right field. However, Edwards chased it down for another stellar Marlins play.

Lions CB Morice Norris says he is 'all good' after scary injury

August 9 - Detroit Lions cornerback Morice Norris Jr., who was taken off the field via ambulance during a preseason game in Atlanta Friday night, provided a positive update about his condition via social media. "Amen Amen," he wrote on his Instagram story Saturday morning. "I'm all good man don't stress it appreciate all the check ins and love." A Lions-blue heart emoji and a bible verse followed. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Falcons running back Nathan Carter took a handoff and got into the Detroit secondary. As Norris went in for the tackle, Carter's right knee hit Norris in the head. The second-year player immediately went to the turf and Lions trainers ran onto the field. After the ambulance carrying Norris left the field, Atlanta quarterback Emory Jones took the snap and stopped the play. The Falcons offense and Lions defense remained on the field, meeting at midfield in a circle, the players bowing their heads and holding hands with each other. Lions coach Dan Campbell and his Atlanta counterpart, Raheem Morris, agreed to end the game. The Lions won 17-10. Norris was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center in Atlanta, for observation. The team issued a statement after the game that said Norris was in stable condition and "feeling and movement" in all his extremities. Norris, 24, appeared in two games for the Lions last year after signing as an undrafted free agent. He was in on one play on defense and 32 plays on special teams. He played two seasons at Fresno State (2022-23) after spending two seasons in junior college. Norris had 116 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and 17.5 tackles for loss with the Bulldogs. --Field Level Media

Why Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift didn't attend funeral for dad Ed's long-term partner

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift were conspicuous by their absence from the funeral of dad Ed's longtime girlfriend Maureen Maguire on Thursday. Pictures exclusively taken by the Daily Mail showed the likes of Jason and his wife Kylie attending the small family service in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania on August 7. But while most of the family turned up at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, there was no sign of Travis or his superstar girlfriend Taylor. It is understood the Chiefs star opted to instead stay in training camp with the Chiefs, where he is preparing for his 13th season in the NFL. While his family were at the service, Kelce was put through his paces by coaches, and in a video later shared by the team he greeted legendary wide receiver Terrell Owens to practice. Meanwhile, Jason and Kyle did make the short trip within their home state, arriving five minutes before the start of the service, suited and booted and with a Starbucks in hand. The 37-year-old Jason appeared downcast as he arrived with wearing a light-colored shirt, dark tie and slacks with wife Kylie dressed in a simple knee-length black shift dress and strappy heels. The celebrity couple – who live a short drive from the church in a $6 million megamansion in the wealthy suburb of Haverford, Pennsylvania - were among the last to join the line of mourners filing through the front doors of the church to say farewell to the partner of the Kelce patriarch, who died last Friday aged 74. The older Kelce brother appeared to be representing both of Ed's sons - after his Kansas City Chiefs brother Travis was spotted at training camp at Missouri Western University in St Joseph, ahead of season start on Saturday. The 35-year-old appeared in great shape at the training camp, pouring cold water on any imminent retirement suggestions. 'I love it here,' Kelce said of training camp. It gets me away from everything else that's going on in this crazy world. You can really just focus in on your craft and focus in on being the best you can for the guys around you, man.' 'Football has always been the biggest driving force I've ever had. I love coming out here and focusing on this and getting better for another run at hopefully a Super Bowl.' Travis's popstar girlfriend Swift was also nowhere to be seen at the small Catholic mass – despite Kelce senior Ed sharing sweet photographs of Maguire and him with the 'I Can Do It with a Broken Heart' hitmaker. Announcing Maguire's death on his Facebook page with an online obituary, Ed shared photo of the three of them in Kansas City Chiefs merch, with the singer holding a card and what appears to be a friendship bracelet. Ed also shared a photograph with Maguire from Saturday Night Live in March 2023 in New York, when three-time Super Bowl winner Travis was the guest host. In an interview last year with the LA Times, Ed revealed how his girlfriend and Swift had struck up a bond. Maguire, according to Ed, jokingly told Swift 'hey, that's my boyfriend' when the singer took a selfie with Travis and Jason's father at an NFL game. Maguire's obituary doesn't explain how she and Ed met but revealed how much football was an influence on her later years.

Inter Miami F Lionel Messi (leg) ruled out for Sunday

August 9 - Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi will not travel for Sunday's match at Orlando City due to a "minor" muscle injury in his right leg, coach Javier Mascherano said Saturday. Messi sustained the injury during last weekend's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa. There is no timeline for the forward's return. "No, Leo will not be available tomorrow," Mascherano said Saturday, per ESPN. "Leo is OK, but obviously it would be crazy to take the risk of taking him to Orlando because of all that is ahead. We are optimistic that he will soon return with us." Messi, 38, entered this weekend with 18 goals, tied with Sam Surridge of Nashville SC for the lead in the chase for the Golden Boot. The Argentina native also has nine assists in 18 MLS matches (17 starts) this season. After visiting Orlando City, the Herons will host Los Angeles FC next Saturday before facing Tigres UANL in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals on Aug. 20 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. --Field Level Media
