Sask. RCMP officer shoots suspect in arm after car chase, watchdog investigating
Saskatchewan's police oversight organization is investigating after a chase Wednesday ended with an officer shooting a suspect in a field near Canwood, Sask., about 130 kilometres north of Saskatoon.
According to the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), RCMP located a vehicle connected to a person wanted on firearms charges from incidents on James Smith Cree Nation.
When officers tried stopping an SUV near Crutwell, Sask., it took off.
SIRT's relelase said the SUV left the road and drove through fields several times.
The SUV finally hit an embankment in a pasture and came to a stop.
RCMP say the man at the wheel got out and was holding a gun.
An officer fired two shots, hitting the suspect in the arm, RCMP say. The man was then arrested.
He and a woman who was inside the car were both taken to hospital.
The 30-year old woman was treated for potential injuries from the SUV's collision with the embankment. RCMP said their injuries are not considered life threatening.
SIRT said a handgun was recovered from the ground at the scene.
The 32-year-old man was wanted by Melfort and Île-à-la-Crosse RCMP for multiple firearms and weapons charges.
He has not been identified.
The passenger is Jasmine Head, a 30-year-old woman from Peter Chapman Band. Head faces robbery and weapons charges related to a May 17 incident at James Smith Cree Nation.
SIRT's investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man's arrest.

Niagara police have made an arrest after a man with a dog allegedly exposed himself to a female on a trail in Welland on Monday afternoon. The first case took place July 28 on Cathcart Street when a 911 call reported a theft in progress. 'Although the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, an investigation revealed the accused had broken into a victim's residence and put several of their belongings into bags to steal them before they were confronted by the victim,' Sault police said in a news release Tuesday. 'Officers also located property reported stolen from the 100 block of Dennis Street two days prior. The accused and the victims are not known to one another. All found property was returned to the victims.' Theft in progress Then at 4:20 p.m. on Monday, a 911 call reported a theft in progress at a residence on Huron Street. 'Officers were dispatched to the scene and located the accused hiding inside the residence,' police said. 'An investigation revealed the accused had broken into the residence by damaging property and put several of the victim's belongings into bags and into their pockets to steal them.' Charges include three counts of violating probation, two counts each of theft and break and enter, and one count each of mischief under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Fentanyl trafficking investigation leads to seizure of two loaded guns
A quantity of illicit drugs and two firearms seized as part of a Toronto Police Service investigation into drug trafficking is shown. (Toronto Police Service) Police have arrested a 38-year-old man who they say was trafficking fentanyl and other illegal drugs throughout the City of Toronto. Officers with the Toronto Police Drug Squad, with the assistance of the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force, executed a search warrant at a residence in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area on Aug. 14. Police say that the suspect was taken into custody at the time. Police also seized a number of items from the property, including a loaded handgun, ammunition, a quantity of cocaine and a large amount of currency. Police say that a second search of a motor vehicle then led to the seizure of another loaded gun, along with a quantity of fentanyl, crack cocaine and cocaine. John Mensah, 38, of Toronto, has been charged with 20 offences, including possession of a loaded restricted firearm. Police continue to investigate and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
